ALOUETTES 30 LIONS 26

Montreal, June 30, 2011 - The Montreal Alouettes received a warm welcome from the 22 317 cheering fans who came out to support their favorite team under cloudy skies at a cool but dry Percival Molson Stadium Thursday evening.   Quarterback Anthony Calvillo tossed three touchdown passes in the Alouettes’ 30-26 win over the B.C. Lions and showed no ill-effects from his off-season thyroid surgery.

Receiver S.J. Green played well, filling in nicely for recently retired and longtime-incumbent Ben Cahoon at the slotback position, while John Bowman and Diamond Ferri each recorded a single sack in the game.

Calvillo excelled in the passing game, completing 22 of 30 attempts for 312 yards and Jamel Richardson showed once again why he is arguably the best receiver in the CFL, finding the end zone twice on long scoring plays from 46 and 40 yards out.
The Alouettes’ defence also limited the Lions’ offence to a meagre 60 yards rushing.
Canadian kicker Sean Whyte faced his former team for the first time since being traded during the off-season and had a solid debut with the Alouettes, connecting on three field goal attempts, including one from 48-yards out, after hitting the uprights early.

MARSHALL THURSDAY COMMENTS

Here is the transcript of Rider coach Greg Marshall's Thursday post-practice media scrum:

Q.  Can you talk about the hiring of Jerry Friesen as a defensive assistant?

MARSHALL:  We knew coming into training camp with Etch stepping aside that we had a spot we could fill on the staff.  Jerry came here as a guest coach and I've worked with Jerry in the past.  I knew he was a good coach and I wanted to see how he fit into the mix here and interacted with the players and whether or not I could work with him personally.  We thought it was a good fit and decided to make that move.  Jerry will help with special teams and defense.  We'll be keeping him busy.

Q.  Are you close to a decision on your kicker?

MARSHALL:  Let's just say it's not finalized but we're closer.

Q.  Can we read into anything that Chris Milo was put on the practice roster?

MARSHALL:  No that doesn't solidify it.  It might give you an indication but we had to shuffle the roster because we got some new guys and guys coming off injury so it was paper moves.

Q.  Have you been happy with kicker Eddie Johnson's performance in practice?

MARSHALL:  I've been happy with him and also Chris Milo as far as coming out here and getting better with the things they've struggled with.  Going into the final exhibition game I was happy with what they'd been doing in camp so that's why it was such a major disappointment that they struggled that night.  But you can't jump to a conclusion on what happens on one bad night.  We'll see how it works out going forward.

Q.  Are the kickers the second-most important players on your team?

MARSHALL:  Well your kicker, particularly your placekicker, is going to be your leading scorer so it better be a position you're confident in.  Behind the quarterback they have great importance but I wouldn't say second-most.  I don't want to offend anybody in the locker room!

Q.  Has OT Alex Gauthier brought everything you had hoped he would?

MARSHALL:  Alex is a veteran guy that will fill that left tackle spot for us.  We're counting on him being a good, solid player for us.  The one thing about Alex is he may not always look pretty but he makes the block and that's what concerns us the most.  I was with him in Hamilton and Winnipeg and know how he plays.  If he plays to his potential, we'll be happy with that.

TEAM CANADA NAMED

Saskatoon, SK --- The final roster for Team Canada has been announced and Saskatchewan is providing five players to the squad that will compete at the IFAF World Championship in Austria July 8 – 16th. . Only Ontario (24) and Quebec (9) will have more players on Team Canada.

"This says so much about football in our province," says Jeff Yausie, Executive Director Football Saskatchewan "when you consider that we have a population of just over one million people and we can produce this many world class football players.  It is something that everyone involved in football can be proud of, and it proves that size isn't everything because one of these guys came up through six-man football and another came out of the nine-man program."

Along with five players, Saskatchewan is represented on the coaching staff by Brian Towriss, head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.  Towriss will be responsible for special teams and running backs on Team Canada.

The team is currently involved in a final training camp at the University of Western Ontario.

Players from Saskatchewan:
- David Stevens (RB) from Moose Jaw and played U of S
- David Rybinski (DT/DE) from Kinistino, played nine-man in Melfort before joining the Regina Thunder and ultimately the Huskies
- Brian Guebert (DL) played six-man at LCBI in Outlook before the Saskatoon Hilltops, U of S and Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL
- Bryce McCall (DB) from Regina who played with the Thunder and Huskies
- Joel Lipinski (DB/C) from Regina who played with University of Regina

FLAMES ANNOUNCEMENT

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames and Abbotsford Heat announced today that Troy G. Ward has been named Head Coach of the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League.

Ward joined the Flames organization last summer as Assistant Coach with the Heat following three seasons with the Houston Aeros, the Minnesota Wild's AHL affiliate. During the final two seasons with the Aeros, Ward was both the Assistant Coach & Assistant General Manager.

"In identifying the Head Coach for Abbotsford we reviewed dozens of resumes and spoke with many highly qualified candidates," said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster.

"The panel we assembled, Brent Sutter, Craig Conroy, Ron Sutter, Michael Holditch and I, felt very good about hiring any of our three finalists; however, we were unanimous in our decision that Troy was the right person to lead our revamped development efforts in Abbotsford. As an organization we are committed to teaching and developing our players in a nurturing, positive, winning environment that will speed their progression to Calgary and the NHL, and we are confident that Troy is the right Head Coach to help us achieve our goals."

As well as his familiarity to the Flames development system, Ward brings head coaching experience to his new position with the Heat. He was named the ECHL's Coach of the Year for the 2000-01 season when he led Trenton to the Kelly Cup Finals with a 50-18-4 record. He also joined ECHL Victoria Salmon Kings mid-season in 2005-06.

FRIESEN JOINS RIDERS

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today that Jerry Friesen has joined the coaching staff for the 2011 CFL season as a special teams/defensive assistant.

Friesen, who most recently served as the head coach for the University of Alberta Golden Bears, spent training camp with the Green and White as a guest coach and worked closely with Craig Dickenson and the special teams.

The Rosthern native played linebacker for the Saskatoon Hilltops before moving on to play for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Friesen entered the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes in 1978 where he spent three seasons before moving back to Saskatchewan and signing with the Roughriders were he played six seasons.

He was honoured with the CFL's Tom Pate Award for contributions to the team and the community in 1986 and later became the defensive coordinator with the Huskies in 1988, sharing in a Vanier Cup national title in 1990.

DRESSLER ON DRESSLER

On Wednesday the Roughriders announced they've signed star slotback Weston Dressler to a contract extension (full details are in the post a few down).  The Bismarck, ND product spoke about the extension today, and also about the launch of Dressler All-Dressed Potatoe Chips from Saskatchewan Co-op:

DRESSLER:  Really it just came down to me wanting to be here.  The coaching staff, front office and everyone wanted me to be here as well.  It's just too good to pass up.  I'm glad we made something work.

CTV:  Was it important to get it done before the season?

DRESSLER:  Kind of.  You don't want to be dealing with that stuff while you're playing.  I'm just real excited about it and happy to be here.

GLOBAL:  Did you get everything you wanted?

DRESSLER:  Yah, ha ha.  Pretty much.

CKRM:  Was it becoming a pain being asked about it?

DRESSLER:  Sometimes it can be yah.  But I've learned now that's part of it.  People are going to ask about it and you're going to go through that to get that contract right.  I'm happy about it and happy to be here.

CKRM:  Is your family excited about it since they're so close by and come to all the games?

DRESSLER:  Oh definitely.  They were happy and I talked with them a lot through the negotiation process.  We discussed things and they were definitely part of my decision.

GLOBAL:  Did you look at NFL options and were you disappointed nothing panned out there?

DRESSLER:  That was really one of the biggest issues when we were deciding to sign this deal.  I just looked at the opportunities I've had here and the experiences I've had here have just been so amazing that I wanted to continue that and I'm real happy to be here.

CTV:  Your thoughts on being rated in the CFL's Top 20 players...

DRESSLER:  I didn't even see that!  That's an honour to be on that list I guess.  There's some great talent in this league so it's an honour to be a part of that.

CKRM:  What about the Dressler chips?

DRESSLER:  The chips are out.  Pretty delicious in my mind.  I encourage you to go out and try them.  I like that they're getting a different variety out there.  It's not just cereal.  Have some cereal in the morning and some chips later.

CKRM:  Can you please tell us that they're in any way healthy?

DRESSLER:  I don't think so.  They're chips.

5-HOLE FOR FOOD COMES TO REGINA!

Five Hole for Food (FHFF) has hit the road again this summer to help Canada's food banks and, once again, are making a stop in Regina.

Founder Richard Loat is playing ball hockey in 13 cities over 17 days in a cross-country road trip with a goal of collecting 20,000 pounds of food donations.

"We had unbelievable support in our first campaign when we brought in 6,000 pounds of food for food banks," says Loat, who is studying communications at Simon Fraser University in B.C. "In 2011, we've expanded our trip to include more cities and increased our food collection goal."

"Food bank inventories are typically lower in the summer, so we're using hockey to bring Canadians together to help others. It's a recipe for success that will assist us in feeding many hungry families."

Loat and his road crew - Victor Lo and Jonathan Buyco - have organized ball hockey games in every city. They played their first game June 23 in St. John's, N.L., and will finish up July 9 in Vancouver, B.C.
The Regina stop on the tour is scheduled for Monday July, 4th at 12:00 PM at the Scarth Street Mall downtown.

Everyone is invited and there is no fee to play drop-in ball hockey. The public is encouraged to bring their hockey stick and a non-perishable food donation. Volunteers from the Regina and District Food Bank will be on site to collect food and cash donations.

The Regina Pats and RBC are local sponsors of the event and are providing exciting prizes for the largest donations of the day. Molson Canadian returns this year as FHFF's presenting sponsor.

Other National sponsors for the 2011 tour include: Chevrolet Canada, Canadian Pacific, Boston Pizza, London Drugs, WestJet, Tiger Lotus Media and Marketwire.

THUNDERBIRDS NAME ASSISTANTS

Kent, June 28, 2011 - Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell announced the team has finalized its coaching staff for the 2011-12 season.

The team has named Darren Rumble and Jim McTaggart as assistant coaches.

Rumble was an associate coach with the Lewiston MAINEiacs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season.
McTaggart was an assistant coach with the T-Birds for the last seven seasons under former head coach Rob Sumner. He was also an assistant coach with the T-Birds from 1994 to 1996.

Rumble played 193 NHL games as a defenseman with the Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Blues and Tampa Bay Lightning. In the NHL, he amassed 36 points and had 10 goals and 26 assists with 216 penalty minutes.

Rumble was a member of the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning team that won the Stanley Cup.

In 2007, Rumble joined the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League as an assistant coach. The Admirals are the top minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was promoted to head coach of the Admirals in July of 2008. Rumble was with the Admirals until January of 2010.

Turner Stevenson has elected to pursue coaching opportunities at the American Hockey League level for next season and will not be returning to the Thunderbirds coaching staff.

CATES HOLDS OFF ALL COMERS

When the Saskatchewan Roughriders open the 2011 CFL season at home to the Edmonton Eskimos Sunday afternoon, Wes Cates will be the starting tailback.

Cates, who will be 32 in October, withstood the challenge of younger ball-carriers Hugh Charles and Brandon West in training camp to win the job.  Cates returns to the Riders for a sixth pro season in 2011 after breaking into the CFL with Calgary in 2006.  In training camp of 2007, Cates was acquired from the Stamps for centre Rob Lazeo, a trade which each team feels they won.

Shoulder problems plagued Cates in 2009 and limited his season to 932 yards rushing but he rebounded in 2010 with 1,054 yards.  While Cates was rumoured to be on the bubble entering this campaign, his quarterback says that's a fabrication.

"I think YOU guys (reporters) put the shelf timing on a running back," Durant countered.  "If a quarterback can play and still run at 35, 36, 37, why can't a running back?  Wes does a great job of taking care of his body and doesn't take any serious hits.  And he works hard.  I think Wes has a good three or four more years in him.  I guess when you get a certain age people start to write a guy off.  I'm just glad Wes has proven everyone wrong."

Rider head coach Greg Marshall said during training camp that the battle at tailback was a great one but he's proud to report Cates won the job.

"You have to tip your cap to Wes," Marshall said this week.  "He's done a great job competing and we have two young guys who are darn good players.  He had a great camp and played very well in the exhibition games.   That's a testament to the fact he takes good care of himself and knows what he needs to do to prepare during the season and off-season.  It's prolonged his career and I'm sure there's lots of tread left on that tire."

Marshall was asked if there's a chance the Saskatchewan offense can utilize the talents of Cates and Charles in some sets.

"Oh yah," Marshall answered.  "We're looking to have those guys on the roster whether it's Hugh or Brandon West.  Most likely Hugh.  That's the plan going forward.  Injuries can change that but we'd like to start that way."

IMPORT DRAFT TOMORROW

It will be a big day for the Regina Pats tomorrow as they will pick 9th overall at the annual CHL Import Draft beginning at 7:00am Regina time.

The two-round draft will take place online and can be followed live as picks are made at http://www.chl.ca/.

Each team in the CHL is permitted to carry two European Import players each season.  These players are selected annually at the Import Draft, with the order of selection rotating through each of the three leagues in the CHL using an inverse order of their final regular season standings from the 2010-11 season.

The Pats currently have one import player on their roster, Swedish defenceman Ricard Blidstrand. He was selected 46th overall in the 2010 CHL Import Draft with a pick acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The OHL's Barrie Colts currently hold the number one selection in the 2011 CHL Import Draft followed by the QMJHL's Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, and the WHL's Calgary Hitmen.  Teams are permitted to trade draft picks up to and during the Import Draft process.

2011 HHOF CLASS

TORONTO - Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour, Mark Howe and Joe Nieuwendyk will form the next Hockey Hall of Fame class.   The four former NHLers were chosen by the Hall's 18-member selection committee on Tuesday.   Belfour was in his first year of eligibility while the other three had endured a wait.  The induction ceremony will be held in November.

MADANI: RIDERS CLOSE TO DRESSLER EXTENSION

From Arash Madani and Sportsnet.ca:

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are on the verge of a contract extension with receiver Weston Dressler, the team's top receiver, Sportsnet.ca has learned.

Negotiations have been ongoing between the football club and slotback for the past two months, dating back to before training camp.  The term of the pact - three years, including and option - has been agreed to, but the dollars have not.  The Riders are believed to be offering an average of approximately $120,000 per year, while Dressler's camp is looking for a higher figure.

While the deal is not yet complete, it is expected to be finished soon, what with the 26-year old believed to be receiving a signing bonus in the neighbourhood of $25-$30,000 in the extension.

Locking up Dressler long-term would keep some stabililty in Saskatchewan's receiving corps, which lost Andy Fantuz to the NFL and Rob Bagg to a torn ACL.  With quarterback Darian Durant under club control through the end of the 2012 season, the Roughriders hope the pair can continue their chemistry.  Dressler had 1,123 receiving yards in his rookie campaign (2008),  and 1,189 last year.  In 2009 he had 941 yards into game 14 before fracturing his right fibula on Oct. 10, ending his season prematurely.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan continues to speak with Eric Wilbur's representatives, just days after the American punter/kicker was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.  Wilbur was impressive in training camp and went 3/4 in the preseason finale against Montreal, including a converted 49-yard field goal, but lost the job to Justin Medlock, arguably the league's top specialist and the best kicker in the CFL.

The Roughriders will go into the season with import Eddie Johnson to handle both punting and kicking duties.  If he struggles, like he did in the exhibition finale in B.C. last Wednesday, Wilbur's phone may be ringing.  The 26-year University of Florida product also has an offer from the UFL which just had its Omaha franchise sign former Argo and Eskimo Walter Curry.

"I don't think Chris Milo's confidence is shaken.  We talked to him a little bit.  Obviously he's disappointed but he said 'Coach I can make field goals' and we have faith in him.  It's just, it'll come down to a little bit of roster juggling and ratio until we make that decision.  When?  Hopefully sooner than later.  I'm not going to pin myself down to an exact day."

CALGARY NAMES ASS'T GM

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today the hiring of John Weisbrod as Assistant General Manager/Player Personnel to Flames General Manager Jay Feaster.

"We are pleased to be able to add someone with John's experience to our staff," said Feaster. "Not only does he come with an extensive background in various disciplines of hockey, John has won championships as General Manager in both the AHL and IHL and most recently in his current position, leading the pro and collegiate scouting staff of the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins. John has the current experience and knowledge that I need from the person in this position."

Weisbrod, a native of Syosset, NY, joins the Flames after winning the Stanley Cup as the Director of Pro and Collegiate Scouting for the Boston Bruins where he has been since joining the organization in September of 2006. Prior to that, John spent the 2005-06 season as a pro scout for the Dallas Stars out of the New England region.

The Harvard graduate became the General Manager/Director of Operations for the Albany River Rats (affiliate of the New Jersey Devils) in 1993 and won the Calder Cup as AHL Champions in 1995. Additionally, he served as the General Manager of the Orlando Solar Bears winning the Turner Cup as IHL Champions in 2001. When the IHL disbanded, the Solar Bears owner promoted him into the Magic organization in an administrative position. However, he was soon promoted to General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the NBA's Orlando Magic for 2004-2005 season before returning to hockey in May of 2005.

Weisbrod attended and played for Harvard from 1987 to 1991 capturing an NCAA National Championship in 1989, while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He won three New York State Championships in 1978, 1980 and 1982. Weisbrod was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars 4th round (73rd overall) in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Because of injury, Weisbrod took the year off hockey in 1991–1992, only to play 16 games with the Kansas City Blades of the IHL before being forced to retire due to injury.

Hrbas, a native of Plzen, Czech Republic, played 64 games with the Oil Kings in 2010-11, scoring five goals and 12 assists for 17 points. He was one of two import players on Edmonton's roster alongside forward Kristians Pelss, an Edmonton Oilers NHL draft pick. Hrbas was also the captain for the Czech Republic at the 2011 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE

THE LATEST ON THE RIDERS AND SOME NHL DRAFT STUFF:

- So what do you make of these Riders?  I thought for sure the team would be adding a veteran kicker over the weekend, whatwith the news that Luca Congi has been placed on the 9-game injured list to start the season.  The seven year vet won't be available until the Banjo Bowl in September.  Kickers Eddie Johnson and Christopher Milo were a combined 1-for-6 in the preseason but coach Greg Marshall says they have faith in Milo "that he can do it.  He made a lot of big kicks at Laval. It's just a matter of getting his confidence up".  The Riders worked some on field goals in practice on Sunday and will in practice all week leading up to Sunday's regular season opener at 5:00 against the Edmonton Eskimos at Mosaic Stadium.

- How does a Sunday 5:00 kickoff work for you?  That seems like a really odd, inconvenient time.

- Rider President Jim Hopson is looking forward to another record-breaking season on and off the field.  We chatted with the club President on Friday and asked for his thoughts on the Rider preseason (a 23-22 home win over Edmonton and a 34-6 loss at B.C.):  "I liked the first one a lot.  The conditions weren't very good but we saw a lot from our rookies and our receiving corps.  But the second game, we have to right that one off.  I've learned over the years not to put too much stock into the preseason but we struggled in a lot of areas.  Maybe it was just the preseason jitters."

- My co-host Scott Schultz asked Hopson his thoughts on the kicking game.  "I'll tell ya, it's a cause for concern based on what we've seen in preseason but I try not to stick my nose into the football side of things.  I listen and try to offer a little bit of advice but the word I'm getting is 'let's not panic'.   You don't get anywhere with that.  Eddie Johnson has done some good things for us.  We definitely will address it and we understand the importannce of it.  But boy it was discouraging.  Let's home it's behind us now."

- Rider GM Brendan Taman was asked by reporters on the weekend if he's happy with the state of the club's kicking game.  "Would you be?" Taman huffed.  "They weren't very good the other night.  They're good kickers but they need to be better."

- The Roughriders held their first practice with their final roster on Sunday.  25 players were released on Saturday and five were transferred to the 9-game injured list and three were transferred to the injured list.  It was nice to see Weston Dressler back at practice after missing both preseason games.  Safety James Patrick was held out of both games too, and missed practice Sunday, but coach Marshall says last year's CFL interception leader will be ready for Sunday's home-opener.

- WR Rob Bagg watched Sunday's practice from the sidelines.   He will begin the season on the 9-game injured list as well.  Interestingly he was walking without a limp.  Odd injury.

- Some rookie members of the team, like tailback Brandon West from Western Michigan, are panicking because they don't have a place to live.  West has even taken to Twitter to help find accomodations.  If you have an apartment or room to rent, email Jeremy with the Roughriders at kellyf@saskriders.com.

- Marshall also noted that Marc Parenteau has won the starting centre job.   Parenteau will be on the Sports Cage with us today to talk about it on Four Seasons Sports Palace Rider Monday.

- Just a heads-up, Rider hall of famer Vic Stevenson will be our in-studio analyst tomorrow night on In The Huddle on Access 7.

From the Canadian Press:

MONTREAL - It was a ring ceremony without enough rings, but that didn't dampen any spirits as the Montreal Alouettes celebrated their 2010 Grey Cup victory.

Quarterback Anthony Calvillo was among only about 20 who got his and he called it "spectacular."

The diamond-studded baubles features two Grey Cups laid end to end to symbolize the team's back to back championships.

It also has each player's picture and name on one side, with the score and other details of their 21-18 victory over Saskatchewan last November on the other.

An Alouettes spokesman says the jeweller encountered delays due to a power outage and equipment trouble, and the rest of the rings are expected to be delivered in about a week.

The presentation went on as scheduled, with groups of players, coaches and staff posing for pictures around a single ring.

- Sincere, sincere apologies to those who have been trying to reach me via email all weekend.  Our email at Harvard Broadcasting has been down since Friday afternoon and still isn't working today.   What a time for it to go down!  The CFL cutdown and the NHL Draft both went this weekend and I was unable to receive any information.  What's worse is they have no idea when it's going to be fixed.

- We went over 2000 Twitter followers this weekend, possibly thanks to you!  www.twitter.com/sportscage or @sportscage.  We currently sit at 2022.

- The Calgary Stampeders will reportedly announce the signing of journeyman quarterback Michael Bishop today, as a means to replace injured back-up Drew Tate.  Personally I think Chris Leak, who the Riders cut on Saturday, has infinitely more potential than Bishop.

- Longtime B.C. Lions centre Angus Reid launches his new radio show today in Vancouver.  It airs from 2-3 pm PT on Team 1410.

- What's Kenton Keith up to now?  Here's what he wrote on Twitter this weekend, "Movies I watched today.  American gangsta, shottas, express, battle of L.A."

- I suppose Keith still has some of the money left around from his couple of years with the Indianapolis Colts.

- Former Rider John Chick has taken to the public speaking trail since he's not being paid by the Indy Colts during the lockout.  Chick is touring western Canada speaking on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

- It's quite ironic to me, particularly after reading the book about the founding of ESPN, that the NFL is in a work stoppage right now because the owners and players can't figure out how to split up their $9.3-billion in revenue.  The majority of that money comes from TV rights, yet the TV networks are being crippled due to the lockout.   Television has made the NFL what it is today, yet the league has driven a knife in the networks' back.

- NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman REALLY comes off as a boob in that ESPN book.  First he brags that he's the first commissioner in sports to suspend play for a year because of a work stoppage.  Bravo!  And the NHL can thank Bettman for not having its games on ESPN.  You'll have to buy the book to find out why.  I believe Chapters in Regina is sold out of it unfortunately.

- Here's a far better photo of my Dad during the first round of the NHL Draft Friday night.  This is the Stars' 1st-round pick Jamie Oleksiak, an American.  Dad said he thought the first round dragged a bit but I said we enjoyed the TV coverage at our draft party sponsored by the Four Seasons!  In fact we wished the TV coverage would have gone on longer.

- For the first time since 2004 there were no Regina Pats drafted by NHL teams.

- CTV's Chris Hodges pointed out on Twitter the breakdown of draftees from Saskatchewan WHL teams: Blades (four), Broncos (three), Raiders (two), Warriors (one).

- Here's a sad list of undrafted players, including the Blades' Brent Benson, courtesy our friends at The Pipeline Show in Edmonton:
http://thepipelineshow.blogspot.com/2011/06/what-about-me-undrafted-players-from.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

- We should have known new Dallas Stars head coach Glen Gulatzan of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan is a HUGE Rider fan.  He let that be known to the Old Guy on the weekend and this week you can expect a Sports Cage appearance by Gulatzan.  Believe it or not he said he's looking forward to it!!

- The return of the WHL to Victoria?  Reporter Scott Fisher takes a look at the prospect this morning at Slam Sports: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/Junior/2011/06/26/18337291-24h.html

- Did I mention my email is down?  It has made news gathering an incredibly tough proposition.

- We went to the movie Bad Teacher last night starring Cameron Dias.  He would say that it's just okay.  One thumb up.

- Have you seen that TV commercial where the guy waves the magic wand and gets a Hyundai Accent?  I'm thinking if I waved a magic wand, I'd be hoping for more than a Hyundai Accent.

- Don't forget it's Monday and that means all-you-can-eat soup & salad at the Press Box Sports Bar today at lunch for just $7.99.  Tonight it's the full rack of ribs dinner for $5.99.  909 Albert St. N.

SUNDAY SPORTS

Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster says asking a player to waive a no-trade clause is the toughest thing you do. Feaster got defenceman Robyn Regehr to waive his, and then traded him, along with winger Ales Kotalik and a second-round pick to Buffalo. The Flames get defenceman Chris Butler and centre Paul Byron. By trading Regehr, Calgary created enough cap space to re-sign forward Alex Tanguay to a five-year contract extension.

---

Ryan Smyth's return to the Edmonton Oilers is on hold. The deal hit a snag during the weekend, with the L-A Kings indicating the Oilers didn't offer the right package to seal the deal. The Banff, Alberta native told the Kings a week ago he'd like to be traded back to Edmonton, where he spent his first 12 NHL seasons. One trade that did go through saw Ottawa acquire forward Nikita Filatov from Columbus for a third-round draft pick in 2012.

---

The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 33 WHL players were selected in the 2011 NHL Draft, with five being selected in the first round. Red Deer Rebels’ forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was selected first overall in the 2011 NHL Draft when the Edmonton Oilers used their first pick to select the 18-year-old (1993) Burnaby, B.C. product yesterday in Minnesota at the Xcel Energy Center, marking the first British Columbia born player to be selected first overall at the NHL Draft.

---

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will hold their first practice with their final roster from 10-11:15am Sunday morning.  On Saturday the Riders released 25 players to achieve the CFL's roster limit.  Included in the cuts were veterans LS Jocelyn Frenette, DT Ryan Lucas, DB Byron Bullock and QB Chris Leak.   Added to the nine-game injured list are K Luca Congi and DE Brent Hawkins.

---

The Calgary Herald and Rogers Sportsnet are reporting the Calgary Stampeders will sign former Argo, Rider and Bomber quarterback Michael Bishop as early as Monday.  The need for a back-up pivot occurred Friday night when Drew Tate got injured in the Stamps' preseason game at Edmonton.

---

The Regina Red Sox capped one of the most improbable comebacks in league history on Saturday night in Moose Jaw.

After winning the opener of a doubleheader with the Miller Express 11-3, the Red Sox fell behind 8-0 in the second inning of Game Two. Not giving up, the Sox would rattle off 7 runs in the final inning to pick up the win.    Jason Veyna had the go-ahead Grand Slam to put the Red Sox ahead for the first - and last - time in the game.

The Red Sox return home today to host the Weyburn Beavers at Currie Field. First pitch goes at 2:05PM.

---

Juan Rivera's three-run homer was the only hit in Toronto's five-run third inning, and it helped carry the Blue Jays past St. Louis 6-3. Pitcher Carlos Villanueva got the big inning started by drawing a walk -- he is 5-and-1 after allowing two runs in six innings. Toronto native Joey Votto drove in five runs with a pair of homers as Cincinnati whipped Baltimore 10-5.

---

A trio of major league hurlers became the season's first 10-game winners. First up was Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia, in New York's 8-3 rout of Colorado. Detroit's Justin Verlander reached the double-digit plateau while striking out 14 in a 6-0 win over Arizona. And, Atlanta's Jair Jurrjens won his tenth, while the Braves bashed San Diego 10-1.

---

Bernard Tomic played the role of giant-killer at Wimbledon, with the 18-year-old qualifier from Australia knocking out fifth-seed Robin Soderling 6-1, 6-4, 7-5. Tomic is the youngest player left standing as Wimbledon goes into its middle Sunday break. Fourth round action gets under way tomorrow.

---

F1 leader Sebastian Vettel is in a familiar spot, and will be starting from the pole in today's European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain. It's his seventh pole in eight races this season. Vettel has five race wins under his belt. There was IndyCar racing under the lights at Iowa Speedway, where Marco Andretti ended a five-year winless drought.

"JETS" IT IS

Courtesy CITY-TV Toronto and Rogers Sportsnet:

TORONTO:  Winnipeg hockey fans have spoken and it seems True North Sports & Entertainment has listened.

According to Nick Kypreos of Hockeycentral, it appears the Winnipeg team will once again be known as the Jets when NHL hockey returns to the city next season.

"I'm told that it will be the Jets," Kypreos said on Hockeycentral Thursday night. "Obviously, they got to go with new colours and a new logo, but when it's all said and done, look for the Jets name to come back to Winnipeg."

It was originally believed that True North wanted to go in a different direction with the team name, but popular demand to revive the Jets name was too much to ignore.

"I really believe they didn't want to go in the direction of Winnipeg Jets or Manitoba Jets initially, but it's been overwhelming (response). Whether it's been the Twitter world or anything on the internet, people really want to see the Jets," Kypreos added.

FRIDAY RODSERVATIONS

TRUTH & RUMOURS

- The Roughriders have today and tomorrow off so do not expect an update from Mosaic Stadium this afternoon.  They've earned the break after nearly three straight weeks of daily workouts.  We'll discuss what's up with the team with Rider great Scott Schultz today on 620 CKRM's Sports Cage from 4-6 pm.  We're hoping for a visit with Rider President Jim Hopson on the show.

- Despite all of TSN's advance hype, tonight's opening round of 2011 NHL Draft in Minneapolis lacks some serious sizzle.  There are NO big names.  Still, we'll be holding a Draft party regardless sponsored by the Four Seasons Sports Palace.  Don't feel like cooking?  The Four Seasons can cater your sports party.   See them at 909 Arcola Ave East.

- NHL fans are abuzz with the release of the schedule this past week.  Here's a note from the Calgary Flames' official Twitter account: "@NHLFlames: For all asking - yes, Friday March 9th is Winnipeg's first game at the Dome in 15 years.  Flames do not make a trip to #YWG this season."

- It's almost the end of June and we're still awaiting the new name of the Winnipeg team and colour scheme.  Not to mention we're waiting to hear who lands the TV and radio rights.  This blogger is still pulling for CJOB Winnipeg's Brian Munz to get the radio gig, but plenty of talented WHL play-by-play men have thrown their hats into the ring.

- Rogers Sportsnet will be hiring a full-time reporter for the Winnipeg market now with both the CFL and NHL in town.  That would be a plum job.  Duke Meyers?

- Here's a plug for Curtis Hunt's hockey school, which he asked us to pass along:

Curtis Hunt's "Perry Pearn 3 vs 3" August conditioning camp is just around the corner.
Midget Eligible start Tue Aug 2, 4:30 at the Twins; Show up early to sign up or give Zane a call.
Jr Prep and our Bantam Camp starts Aug 8 -19
Major jr/ College / Pro player camp – 1week only Aug 15 -19
Call Zane Jakubec, Camp Director 780-458-5749 or email zljakubec@shaw.ca

COME READY TO WORK

- Lots of people have asked us to plug their events today so be prepared.

- Pats GM Chad Lang is likely conducting interviews for the head coaching position this weekend in Minnesota however a veteran NHL scout and former NHLer doesn't buy it.  "Lang has to have someone in mind for the job," the scout told me this week.  "You don't fire someone without having somebody lined up just like you don't quit a job without having another one lined up."

- Where are they now?  The Riders have a much different looking coaching staff this season compared to 2010.  Here's what some of last year's group are up to: DL coach Mike Scheper is marrying a Regina girl and is coaching at a junior college in California, OL Tom Freeman is believed to be working in the UFL (or at least he was trying to) and DB coach Nelson Martin is working with the University of Ottawa GeeGees.

- Whether it's indoors or outdoors, the B.C. Lions put on one helluva show.  Their music list should be copied by every stadium in North America.  I encourage anyone to take in a Lions' home game, particularly when the Riders are in town.  They really make it fun.

- A CFL-type said this week "I am convinced this will be Wally Buono's last year on the sidelines".   However I am not convinced of that.  A) It depends on how the Lions fare this season and they'll likely be good and B) What else would Wally do?  Coaching is what Wally does and what he is.

- SO many Vancouverites said this week they are embarrassed for their city's riots and felt the need to apologize for it.   Whaaaaaat???  Wouldn't you all agree the riots were no reflection of Vancouver as a city nor of its people?  That's what I told them anyways.   Vancouver rocks.

- 29,117 fans turned out to Canad Inns Stadium last night to watch a Toronto Argo last-minute victory over the hometown Blue Bombers.  Kudos to Bomber fans for selling it out!   Believe it or not the Riders have the highest preseason attendance this season at 29,130.  It's doubtful that will be beaten tonight in Edmonton when the Eskimos host Calgary.

- Of course about half of that 29,130 showed up at Mosaic Stadium last week in Regina because of the windy, rainy conditions.   That only further strengthens our argument that this province needs a dome.  If you're dead-set against being indoors, you should have showed up last week to prove your point.

- Because the CFL preseason games have been generally lacklustre and without big names, somebody floated the notion this week that perhaps TSN won't carry them in the future.   However another person answered back "The NFL televises all its preseason games, no matter how many rookies play, so TSN will keep doing it".   The numbers have been excellent too, with almost half-a-million viewers tuning into the Rider games on TV.

- TSN's Glen Suitor gives Regina's new country bar, the Whiskey Saloon, two thumbs up.  "It's pure country!" Suitor smiled this week, and even gave the bar kudos on Twitter.  How does a guy from Vancouver love country music so much?

- I've never heard so much complaining about paying full price to watch preseason games which don't feature the big stars as I have this year.  That's just the way it goes friends.  In all leagues.

- Rider kicker Eddie Johnson is looking to get his groove back and prevent the Riders from looking elsewhere for a veteran kicker.  Some Rider fans on Twitter suggested Eddie grow his trademark moustache back (pictured in the post below).  He told us yesterday "I had to lose weight in a hurry so I shaved it off.  I think I dropped 5 pounds by losing that thing."

- Eddie got rocked on a hit just after his follow-through in BC Wednesday night and was asked Thursday how he is.  "I could find my car keys," Johnson quipped.  "But I still can't find the TV remote."

- @sportscage only needs eight more followers to hit 2000!!!  Try to hit it up today if you can at www.twitter.com/sportscage.

- It's good to hear so much CFL talk on eastern sports talk radio.  Tune into TSN 1050 Toronto tomorrow afternoon at 1:45 pm Saskatchewan time as I'll be chatting pigskin with Matt Cauz and then between 3-4 pm Saturday I'll be talking Riders on 900 CHML Hamilton.

- I'm so glad TSN's Matt Dunigan shaved off that unsightful goatee.  It makes him look 30 years younger without.

- Now being a sports talk host myself, I never turn down these radio requests.  Hosting those shows is tough and the hardest part is lining up guests.  Play-by-play is EASY, and that's what I do and what I am and everyone knows it.  It's GREAT to be back in the booth for another season.

- Congratulations to former CKRM morning man Willy Cole for being named the Western Association of Broadcasters 2011 Broadcaster of the Year.  What an award!

- It should be illegal for people to drive with a dog in their lap.

- Some photos..

Remember my buddy Army Jeff?  You haven't heard much about him because we're going to different gyms now but he passed along these photos and this note:

"On 26 May, I had the priviledge of introducing the Premier at the largest Premiers dinner in SK history, over 2200 in attendance. I have attached a photo or two for you to see from the event, the staff just sent some photos over."

Jeff is a Warrant Officer for the Canadian Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan.  Apparently a Warrant Officer is a step up from a Sargeant, but we still call Jeff "Sarge".   Premier Wall asked Warrant Officer Dickson to consider running for office one day.   I'd say he would be a shoo-in.

Pictured here are Dickson and our Premier.

- A note from our friend and blog reader Phil Deutscher: "Once again this year TCU will be holding our annual bar b que in support of JDRF, details below. If you could give us a mention on your blog that would be greatly appreciated!

DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY // SPORTS CAGE PODCAST

The Roughriders returned from Vancouver Thursday afternoon, still smarting from Wednesday's 34-6 preseason loss to BC. Rider kickers were a combined 1/4 on the night and coach Greg Marshall was asked how much of a concern the kicking game is right now.

"Huge," Marshall admitted. "Last night, between the three guys we used, no one distinguished themselves. We're gonna have to sort that out pretty quick because obviously in this league if your kicking game is struggling it makes it awful tough on everybody else."

I asked Marshall if the club would consider bringing in an experienced vet. 6-year vet Luca Congi is still weeks away from returning from injury.

"I mean Rod we'll assess the whole thing," Marshall answered. "We'll try not to base it on just one night but obviously last night's game wasn't good enough. We'll consider all options and see who comes available. We'll weigh that against what we have and look at the options."

Veteran Rider kicker Eddie Johnson was 1/2 Wednesday, making from 18 yards and missing from 49. He's not concerned about job security.

"Hey whatever they wanna do is whatever they wanna do," Johnson offered. "For me, do I have faith in my ability to play? Yes. I have total faith in my ability to play and be successful. I'm not worried about it."

We'll dissect the Riders' current plight today on the Sports Cage on 620 CKRM from 4-6 pm.
