TALBOT RETIRES
Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman says, "Andre informed us yesterday he has decided to retire from professional football. He was very gracious about his experience with the Eskimos and we thanked him for his contributions to our club and league. It's always nice when a player leaves the game at peace and on his own terms. As he goes to the next phase of life, Andre has much to be proud of, including his significant role in the Toronto Argonauts' 2004 championship season."
Traded to Edmonton from Toronto in February 2010, Talbot played 13 games in green and gold and had 27 catches for 301 yards and a touchdown. He had his best game in Week 5 when he hauled in six catches for 75 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

BLADES STATEMENT ON SCHENN
Brayden does have a personal Facebook account; it is does not appear in searches due to extreme privacy settings and cannot be viewed by the public. Therefore, any user with the name 'Brayden Schenn' that you can find on Facebook is not him.
Brayden released the following statement, "I would like to apologize to anyone that was hurt by this persons comment. I appreciate all of my fans and am looking forward to focusing on the Blades playoff run."
The Saskatoon Blades Hockey Club has requested a police investigation.
"I just know that last night somebody had come up to our coach before the game and mentioned there was a Facebook page that was allegedly Brayden Schenn's," Blades President Jack Brodsky told CKRM radio Thursday. "Allegedly there were some racial slurs on there. I have not seen that page, and apparently it's gone now. I did a little search on Facebook today and there were about eight accounts that came up as Brayden Schenn's. In fact none of them were him. He has one that's quite private with a lot of filters on it that's only accessible to his friends. Those comments were not Brayden's. It's just a very unfortunate situation.
"We've talked to city police here and they're looking into it but these things are very difficult to trace and follow. What we'd really like to do is assure everyone that these were not Brayden's comments and Brayden doesn't have those types of feelings to First Nations people, nor anyone else. Brayden just wants to play hockey and that's what he's doing. Again it's an unfortunate. These things happen in the playoffs and there's obviously some person out there with not much integrity and it's unfortunate but we just want to focus on the game coming up here (in P.A.) tonight and do the best we can on that."

JYLES TRADED
Jyles started ten games for the Blue Bombers last season, posting a 2-8 record. He was signed as a free agent by Winnipeg on February 23, 2010.
"We would like to thank Steven for his contributions to our football club last season," said Vice-President of Football Operations and General Manager Joe Mack. "However, we felt as though this trade benefited our football team long-term as we were able to acquire two draft picks, one of which is a fourth overall this year, will in turn improve our Canadian content for years to come. With the importance of non-import players in our league, combined with how we feel about our current quarterback situation with Buck Pierce and our young quarterbacks, we're very happy with the transaction we were able to complete today."

RIDERS RELEASE MARCUS ADAMS
"We want to thank Marcus for all the contributions he made as a Rider both on and off the field," stated Rider General Manager Brendan Taman. "We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
Adams played the last eight seasons with the Riders after originally signing as a free agent in March, 2003. In 84 regular season games played, Adams had 129 defensive tackles, 12 quarterback sacks, five tackles for a loss and three fumble recoveries.
In 2010, the defensive tackle started in 16 regular season games and tallied 26 defensive tackles, two quarterback sacks and one fumble recovery.
TAMAN ON ADAMS RELEASE
- "I don't really think its what he was lacking. We've got some young guys who fit our defense a little bit better. We've got Rod Wright and Tearrius George and other people who might fit in. We've got some other people we're gonna try to sign. Chunky had a good career. He hung on pretty long for everything considered and he did a good job for us."
- "I don't get into size too much. There are a lot of things that go into it when you make these decisions. Size rarely comes into play."
- "We've got a long ways to go over the next few months. We've got mini-camps happening and we'll have enough D-linemen in camp."
- "Chunky's a good guy. It's not a fun thing to give him the word. You become accustomed to it unfortunately. He's been a very valuable member around here the past number of years but these things happen. Money comes into it, but we would have had to restructure things."
- "He's okay. I talked to him face-to-face last week. It's never fun to hear news like that."
- "This locker room has empty stalls in it for a reason. You never know who will be in them come training camp. It's unfortunate we didn't get the job done in the past few years because they guys would have had another ring before they left."

WHL FIRING
"Rob has contributed a great deal to our organization during his time here and we would like to thank him for his years of service with the Thunderbirds," said Farwell. "He was a dedicated and loyal member of our team for 15 years and we appreciate his efforts to help the Thunderbirds grow as an organization."
The search for a new Head Coach will begin immediately.
SJHL FIRING
Mann is the third coach to be relieved of his duties in the SJHL this season joining Larry Wintoneak in Kindersley and Karry Biette in Estevan.
DOMINGUEZ ON FANTUZ
ON FANTUZ MAKING THE CHICAGO BEARS
It's gonna be a longshot for so many reasons in my opinion. First, we don't know how long the labour dispute will last. They're talking they might not be playing till mid-season or not at all. They won't even start evaluating him until they're in some sort of training camp. I give Andy all the credit in the world though because you don't want to be 50 years old saying 'why didn't I take a shot at the NFL?' You gotta do what you gotta do.
Ultimately we don't play football for very long. People have to realize that. You grow up wanting to play in the NFL. That is your goal. I don't know too many guys in the CFL who don't want to play in the NFL. For Andy, the CFL isn't going anywhere. He's proven himself here. He needs to look himself in the mirror years down the road and be able to say he did everything he could to play in the NFL.
ON PUTTING A PROVISION IN HIS CONTRACT TO COME BACK TO THE CFL IF THERE'S A LOCKOUT
You can try to do anything but the truth is Andy doesn't have a lot of leverage. You're a guy coming into the NFL hoping to make a team, not a guy that should be telling the NFL what it should and shouldn't do. So they're just going to give him the base minimum of everything and give him a shot to make it.
ON LOVIE SMITH NOT KNOWING WHO FANTUZ IS
The head coach doesn't do scouting. He scouts the players they have on the team on tape from practices. Andy needs to become one of those guys and show in practices that he can be successful. He's also going to a Bears team where they're looking for new receivers. He's being given a good chance. I tell him what I tell everybody; whatever signing bonus they gave you is a good indication of how serious they are about you. If you got a big bonus they're more likely to keep you because they're invested in you, but it works the other way as well. Unfortunately there's not a high percentage of guys that go from the CFL to the NFL that stick. The odds are not with us.

THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE
The purpose of today's column isn't so much to entertain you as it is to inform you. As always, grab a coffee and get comfortable. You're going to be here for awhile...
- One of the highlights of the weekend was Saturday night's 40th birthday surprise party for Jamie Heward, the former Regina Pat and longtime NHLer. His wife Ticia threw the elaborate bash at the Victoria Club and here's a photo of Jamie as he walked through the door to the traditional "SURPRISE!!!!".
What I got the biggest kick out of was the slideshow which showed pictures of Jamie playing with the Leafs, Penguins, Kings, Capitals, Islanders, Predators, etc. Mike Sillinger turned to Jamie and said "You're a suitcase". This coming from the guy who played with a record TWELVE NHL teams!
- Quick trivia: Between the two, Heward and Sillinger played for 20 of the 30 NHL teams. Can you name the ten they DIDN'T play for?
- Our buddy Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press wrote an interesting column on the weekend where he ranked Rider fans #2 in his top ten list of the best fans in sports. Considering Lawless picked Steelers fans #1 - and he's a Steelers fan - perhaps there's a case to be made that Rider fans are actually #1 in the world. You can read Gary's column here:
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/for-the-love-of-the-game-118730704.html
- Rider great Don Narcisse is throwing a massive gala and youth football camp on Saturday May 7th at the Delta and Mosaic Stadium. Spots are filling up and you don't want to miss out. For details check out http://www.donnarcisse.com/.
- I asked Narco if he ever gets tired of talking Rider football and his reply was "I don't talk much about it at all. Other people do". He's right. Everybody wants to gush about their favourite Rider memories to Don, but people rarely ask him his!
- Narcisse has expressed interest in being a guest receivers coach at 2011 Rider training camp.
- How's this for Rider Pride?:
"Hi Rod! Here's a group photo of my Intermediate Band and Senior Orchestra from Westmount Charter School in Calgary. We were in Regina this week to participate in the Optimist Band Festival and HAD to make a stop at hallowed ground (the kids obliged their teacher, back row in the 'Rider toque). It may not be an exotic locale for most folks in the 306, but for this ex-Regina boy living in Chinook country, getting this picture meant the world.

P.S. Please excuse the Stamps hoodie (Bunny-hug!) in the front. We tried to leave her at the border."
**Send your Rider Pride pics to me at sportscage@620ckrm.com**
- Pats great Jordan Eberle was a guest of CBC's Scott Oake on Hockey Night In Canada's After Hours Saturday night. Here are some of his quotes:
ON HIS FIRST NHL GOAL
That seems like so long ago. I got a bit lucky on it. I would've taken anything. If it had gone off my butt or my skate, it's my first goal so I'll always remember it.
ON PLAYING IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Yah for sure. I got the experience last year. Anytime you get to represent your country it's pretty cool. Last year coming out of junior I was pretty star-struck so hopefully I get the opportunity again.
-
The Kamloops Blazers have announced the contract extensions of Director of Player Personnel, Matt Recchi and Head Scout Ken Fox. Recchi and Fox were both hired by the hockey club in July 2008.
Recchi has led the Blazers through two WHL Bantam Drafts in 2009 and 2010. Under Recchi, the Blazers have drafted and listed players such as Brady Gaudet (1st round 2009), Logan McVeigh (2nd round 2009), Dylan Willick (Listed player), Chase Souto (5th round 2009), Matthew Needham (1st round 2010) and Cole Ully (2nd round 2010).
Fox is a long-time WHL scout who will continue in his current role as the Blazers Head Scout. Fox, who lives in Holdfast, Saskatchewan, has been a key contributor in the Blazers last two WHL Bantam Drafts. He has helped the hockey club find quality players and prospects such as JC Lipon (Listed Player), Landon Cross (3rd round) and Taran Kozun (Listed Player).
- Theoren Fleury is turning the tables on the haters. If you follow Theo on Twitter (@theofleury14), you'll notice than whenever he gets hatemail via Twitter, he retweets it so everyone can see the jackasses he has to put up with. What a great way to deal with the anonymous cowards! Unfortunately we may never find a way around internet anonymity, but that doesn't mean we can't fight back.
- Regina's Tyler Jones won Sportsnet's Most Connected Oilers Fan contest, and wanted to pass along a thank you to rodpedersen.com readers. Many of you voted for the Regina teacher in the online poll, and he won! The Joneses will be attending the April 5 game between the Canucks and Oilers in Edmonton. Be sure to send pictures Tyler!!
- WHL broadcasters will get a kick out of this ... I've been in regular contact with Warriors broadcaster James Gallo throughout their playoff series with Kootenay. Guys, you remember that annoying usher that stands beside the press box in the Cranbrook Rec Plex and hassles the visiting play-by-play guy? Gallo reports the guy didn't even stay till the end of Game 1 as the Tribe was routing the Ice. Unfortunately, as the Ice won Game 2, you could hear the guy hooting and hollering through James's crowd mic. Chinny, can't you move that guy to the other side of the arena??
- I HAVE FOUND THE RIDERS' NEW P.A. ANNOUNCER! His name is Jordie Richardson and he's a grade 12 student at Peacock High in Moose Jaw. He announced the Sheldon Spartans game Saturday morning at Hoopla and he made it sound like the LAKERS AND CELTICS AT STAPLES CENTER! I'm seriously not joking. I went up and introduced myself after the match and we exchanged contact info. I think the Riders have their man.
- The 620 CKRM Roughrider Pep Band is on a recruitment drive, looking for new members. Call Bob at 586-2639 or Rhonda at 780-7025 if you'd like to be a part of the CFL's greatest band.
- Moose Jaw, you HAVE to clean up those dilapidated, detiorating road signs as you're approaching the city from the east. They look third-world. The city's gots tons of great things going for it right now, but those signs (like the Smitty's one which is falling apart) look dreadful.
- Lucky amateur and pro football coaches will get the opportunity to listen to three greats this weekend at the inaugural Football Canada Coaches convention in Burlington, Ontario. The Riders' Greg Marshall along with the Ticats' Marcel Bellefeuille and the Alouettes' Marc Trestman will all be giving presentations. Trestman will speak about developing young quarterbacks, Marcel will talk about the o-line and Marshall will talk about the pass rush.
The FCCA was created to help coaches across Canada continue to develop their skills and knowledge of the game of Canadian football concerning coaching, leadership, nutrition, strength, conditioning and game-related health issues. For more information, visit http://www.footballcanada.com/.
- The Blue Bombers will be playing in their new stadium in 2012.
- It's not too late to get tickets for Saturday's Regina Red Sox fundraising dinner presented by The Water Warehouse. The keynote speaker is 16-year major league catcher Rick Cerrone. Go to www.reginaredsox.com to get your tickets.
- The Harlem Globetrotters will perform at Evraz Place on April 11. Get your tickets at the Brandt Centre box office.
- OMG has it come to this?? Listening to the New York Islanders-Atlanta Thrashers game the other night, it was being broadcast on WRHU, the Hofstra University campus radio station! Tell me again how the NHL actually means something to Americans??
- Five Regina Pats are still playing hockey this spring. Garrett Mitchell (Hershey, AHL), Brandon Davidson (Oklahoma City, AHL), Jordan Weal (Manchester, AHL), Shane Neigum (Bridgeport Sound, AHL) and Art Bidlevski (Bridgeport Sound, AHL) have had their seasons extended.
THAT'S ALL SO I'M OUTTA HERE! SEE YOU AT 4:00 IN THE CAGE

BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH
By: Bob Hughes for Exit Realty Fusion In the final moments of the month of March in a city nobody had ever heard of before this, on a day filled with such hope and fulfilment of a lifelong dream, the clock cruelly struck midnight for Amber Holland’s spirited rink from Saskatchewan, and brought to an end The Chase for World Gold. Beware The Ides of March.
They had travelled the most remarkable of roads to this place called Esbjerg on the west coast of Denmark, each stop along the way to the world women’s curling championship fuelled by a deep belief that they could be the best in the whole wide world. Together only six years, and far younger than their level of talent would suggest, the Holland rink won their second straight Saskatchewan women’s curling championship this winter.
Then, they rocked the nation by beating the seemingly unbeatable Jennifer Jones, a four-time Canadian champion, in the Scotties for Saskatchewan’s first Canadian women’s title since the glory days of the late Sandra Schmirler in 1997.
When they landed in Denmark, they quickly boarded a roller coaster for a topsy turvy ride that would take them to within reach of a world title. They opened the world championship with a win over China, then dipped into a three-game losing streak that put them so deep in the hole they could barely see the light at the end of the tunnel. But, in an amazing display of true grit, a flare for the dramatic and a steadfast belief in themselves, they started an incredible run. They won nine of their last 10 games to nudge up against the candy store window. They somehow had pulled themselves together to qualify for a tie-breaker.
Then, the challenge grew even larger. It would be sudden-death curling the rest of the way. They would have to win four straight games to grab the gold. In the history of world’s women’s curling, no team had ever come out of a tie-breaker to win the championship. In the history of world women’s curling, no team since 1985 had come out a tie-breaker and made it to the final. If there is one thing you pick up on about the Holland rink, it is that they seem to know no fear. They rarely get rattled. And, Amber is a crusader who is there almost every time they need her to make a critical shot. She made so many of them in Denmark. All except the last one, you suppose.
When they reached the final against two-time world champion Anette Norberg of Sweden, a topsy-turvey, heavyweight battle broke out. Throughout the game, Holland’s rink had chances to take charge, but for the first time all week, couldn’t deliver the finishing shot. And, when it came down the final end, and with last rock, Amber’s gang dug a hole too big for even them to get out of. The Swede won her third world championship by stealing a pair in the 10th for a 7-5 win. It was a bittersweet moment for the girls from Saskatchewan. This is what they had worked so hard for since hooking up six years ago. But, you had to remember that they are a young group.
Amber is the oldest at 36, and has had international experience. But, the others are in their 20s, and that they were able to play as well as they did for so long this curling season speaks bold words of promise for the future. They are the new kids on the international block, so confident, and now with so much experience on the world stage. They could be the next Canadian curling dynasty, they are that good. But perhaps even more than that is the spilloff from their run to glory. Amber is the executive director of the Saskatchewan Curling Association, and one of her biggest tasks is to get young people into curling rinks to ensure the future of the game. Anybody watching last week had to be impressed with what they saw.
The girls had fun, clearly held a genuine love for the game, and playing with each other. You couldn’t have done a better selling job for women’s curling than they did. And, it will pay off down the road. It was an incredible season for a lot of reasons, and the best is yet to come.

SWEDEN 7 CANADA 5
Sweden's Anette Norberg stole two points in the final end to edge Regina's Amber Holland 7-5.
It was an extremely tight final between Canada and the reigning Olympic champions.
Holland had the hammer in the 10th end but her final shot came up just short.
The Canadian team was bidding for the country's first world championship in women's curling since Jennifer Jones in 2008.
Earlier in the day, China took bronze with a 10-9 victory in extra ends over Denmark.

LAURY RYAN STEPS DOWN
During Ryan's term, the SJHL has prospered and is considered by many as one the top junior "A" hockey leagues in Canada. The league has seen many developments including the creation of the World Junior "A" challenge which allowed junior "A" players and coaches to represent Canada for the first time in history.
The establishment of the SJHL Hall of Fame that in 2011 will see its third induction ceremony as the league recognizes its past heroes. The Saskatchewan Development Model, which coordinates elite hockey in Saskatchewan and the Junior A Supplement, that is a partnership with Hockey Canada and four other Junior A leagues are considered key achievements.
The SJHL has had a successful run with league teams participating in six RBC championships finals collecting three national championships. The SJHL also became the first Junior "A" league in Canada to have live games broadcast across the province including the Credit Union Cup Championship series on cable television.
"It has been an honour to represent the league on behalf of so many great individuals who work tirelessly in their respective communities to make their franchises viable and successful. Any and all the good things that were achieved are a testament to their efforts" stated Ryan, "It has been an honour to serve as President of the SJHL."

Rider Nation, the most recognizable force in the world!
We were on our holiday in Mexico this February (wearing Rider gear of course). The first order of business was claiming the villa in the name of Rider Nation by hanging our flag. Often we heard as we relaxed by the pool "Look at that! A Rider Flag! Awesome!" We were always greeted everywhere we went with people hollering "RIDERS!"
These cheers came from a wide variety of people ... people who work at the resort, fellow Canadians, Americans, and even a few Euro's. Even off the resort the Rider logo was easy to find. We unfortunately heard a few "13th man" comments from a few other tools around the resort ... notably one guy who's team didn't make the big game in their home town ... a fact we enjoyed drawing attention to.
At any rate a group of us got together to record this moment for the memory book.
These proud Rider Fans are (L to R):
Octavia & Ferrel (Horndog) Horn of Wapella, SK.
Trudi & Travis (Captain Hook) Holmstrom of Wapella, SK.
Michelle & Jason (Cuddlebug) Bender of Moosomin, SK.
Janelle & Jason (Big Schenny) Schenn of Moosomin, SK.
Jenette & Jeff (Jeffy ... Think "The Ringer") Haubrich of Whitewood, SK.
The wives have nicknames too but better judgment says don't broadcast that info.
Bring on the 2011 CFL Season! GO RIDERS!!

- Someone asked me earlier this week how negotiations are going between the Riders and star slotback Weston Dressler to extend his contract. I had no idea so I asked the football club and they said there has been no attempt made to even open talks. What do you suppose this means? Last month safety James Patrick approached the team about extending his deal and his request was granted. Is Weston banking on playing out his option year and going to the highest bidder in 2012? We'll discuss this on today's FOUR SEASONS FOOTBALL FRIDAY in the Sports Cage at 4:00 with the Old 96er Scott Schultz.
- Will it be Riders-Alouettes III in the Grey Cup this November in Vancouver? I hope not. Many are predicting Riders-Ticats, a rematch of the 1989 CFL championship.
- An NFL assistant coach asked me this week who will go #1 in the CFL draft? I didn't have a clue so I did some digging. It turns out the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are expected to draft Ottawa offensive tackle Scott Mitchell with the first selection. At least, I'm told, they should.
- If you want to read a true behind-the-scenes account of what goes on in pro football with regards to the draft and recruiting, you MUST read this article:
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Medias-influence-on-the-draft.html
It's an incredible read and, I regret to say, bang on.
- Great quotes from Olympic gold medal-winning curler Ben Hebert on the Sports Cage this week. When I asked him about his fellow curlers not liking him due to his fiery temper on the ice his response was "I got lots of friends. I don't need anymore friends. Guys who say that are the ones who lose all the time. Glenn Howard, Brad Gushue, Jeff Stoughton, they all hate to lose too."
- Hebert also pointed out that he and Jordan Eberle are up for Saskatchewan Male Athlete of the Year in 2010. I asked him whom he'd vote for and he said, "Lucas Makowsky".
- A sports marketer told me this week that marketing for a sports team is made up of 85% winning. I can see it. I never truly became interested in the Riders until 1988, when I was 15. They just plain sucked before that. Missing the playoffs for 11 years straight?? How did the Rider Nation deal with that? Was there even a Rider Nation back then? I was more into hockey and baseball during that stretch.
- That's where the Pats are in a condundrum. They need to start winning real soon or risk alienating a generation of fans.
- The Pats are in a pinch for another reason. It seems pretty clear the organization is on the right track with some great young prospects, exceeding expectations in terms of wins in 2010-11 and a bright future. So how do you fire anybody? Maybe you don't. As Chad Lang said this week, "that's the million dollar question".
- The comment I hear most is "Too bad Chad Lang wasn't hired as GM a year before. He would've gotten something good for Eberle and Teubert."
- Funny quote from Shaun Sutter midway through Thursday's Sports Cage: "You guys don't use a script??". Haha, we go by the seat of our pants every day on that program.
- There's High Impact Wrestling tonight at 8:00 at the Victoria Club. Apparently there's a cage match tonight. No we won't be taking this one in, but hopefully next month. We need to pace ourselves.
- I said I needed to get something off my chest and I do. If you're going to ride a bicycle in traffic, DON'T WEAR CAMOUFLAGE!!! I almost killed a guy on Wednesday at the intersection of Broad St. and 4th Avenue in front of the cemetery on my way to the Press Box. The guy was riding along the west side of the intersection and I couldn't even SEE him. Then he had the nerve to shake his fist and swear at me.
- All week young singer Rebecca Black has been getting ripped apart on blogs and in the media including CNN's Showbiz Tonight for her perceived "dreadful singing". Personally I could listen to her all day compared to Johnny Reid. When that guy's songs come on the radio, I switch the station.
- Speaking of radio, I finally got the Titan Auto 620 CKRM sports cruiser back from Maaco after the nasty accident I was in six weeks ago. It's nice to get my satellite radio back but now I miss all the local stations I had rediscovered. If you're hooked on satellite radio, just give us local guys a try! 710 ESPN Bismarck is always good and there's a show on 620 CKRM from 4-6 pm everyday that's pretty good. I sure enjoyed 100.7 FM over the past several weeks as well. Whomever's programming that station is doing a helluva job.
- Today's Press Box Sports Bar Friday Lunch Buffet from Chef Sid:
"Hey guys, on this week’s buffet we will have pizzas, breaded chicken, sausage and perogies, battered mushrooms, scalloped potatoes, cream corn and kernel corn, Caesar, veggies, and dessert. Peace out"
SEE YOU IN THE CAGE TODAY AT 4:00!

BIG DAY FOR THE MOLLEKENS
ESKIMOS SIGN KICK RETURNER
James (5-7, 185lbs, born: Dec 21/87) had a stellar college career at Florida(2006-'09). In his first season, James was named to the Coaches All-SEC Freshman and Rivals.com Freshman All-American teams. James played a key role in the Gators' 2007 BCS National Championship win over Ohio State. He was twice named an All-SEC player (2008 and 2009), SEC Special Teams player of the Year in 2009. The prolific James, who owns four SEC return records and eleven school records, finished his collegiate career with 4,089 punt and kickoff return yards, including five returns for touchdowns.
Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman says, "In a highly competitive league like ours special teams are often the difference in winning closing games. With his speed and elusiveness, we believe Brandon has a chance to be an explosive talent. He was dominant in an elite conference (the SEC) as his record-breaking career reflects and on our bigger field where returning punts, kickoffs and missed field goals are all a major part of winning in the Canadian Football League, we're hoping Brandonwill generate an abundance of excitement and big plays."

STAMPS EXTEND CORNISH
"Jon has proven over the past four seasons that he's a valuable, versatile and explosive player," said Hufnagel. "He has become an important part of our offence, while continuing to contribute on special teams, so we're very pleased that he chose to extend his contract with the Stampeders."
Cornish was the Stampeders' nominee for the Canadian Football League's Most Outstanding Canadian award in 2010 after posting an average of 7.3 yards per rush, tops in the CFL among all running backs with at least 50 carries. He amassed 1,068 all-purpose yards in 2010 including a career-best 618 rushing yards on 85 carries and 226 receiving yards and one touchdown on 14 catches.
Cornish twice earned top Canadian honours in the CFL player of the week awards during the 2010 season as he was recognized for his efforts in Week 4 and Week 9. The four-year member of the Red and White was also a strong contributor on special teams, making a dozen tackles and returning 12 kickoffs for 224 yards.
"I'm very happy to know that I will be continuing my career with the Stampeders," said Cornish, a 26-year-old native of New Westminster, B.C. "Calgary is my home now and I look forward to being here for many years to come."
A product of the University of Kansas, Cornish was selected by Calgary in the second round (13th overall) of the 2006 CFL Canadian Draft and he joined the club in 2007.

AMERICA'S TOP 10 SPORTS BARS
MSN.com has compiled a list of the top ten sports bars in the USA. What are your favourites in Canada? Let everyone know in the comments section below. Here's the American list:10. Jake's Dilemma, New York City
This fun-filled Upper West Side party place appeals to any mood. The front room, spacious and flanked by a long bar on one side and booths on the other, is filled with lots of diversions: foosball, video games and the usual array of sports games flashing on multiple TVs. A regular and raucous neighborhood bunch makes Jake's ripe for chants, hollers and drinking games. And why not -- with 40 bottled beers and 15 brews on tap, there's plenty of reason to party here.
9. Bobby Valentine's Sports Gallery Café, Stamford, Conn.
Make no mistake: this is no ordinary sports bar. It's a shrine to one of Stamford's favorite sons, owner Bobby Valentine. Born in the city, he was a star ball player in high school and, up until 2002, manager of the New York Mets. Think of this as Bobby's annuity, frequented by his local friends and fans. The place is filled with memorabilia and, of course, when a good game is on, with sports fans.
8. The Burger & Beer Joint, Miami
The Burger & Beer Joint offers a burger restaurant, a sports bar and a lounge upstairs, so someone could watch the big game, meet the galpal for dinner and then dance the night away without moving the car or even stepping outside. The restaurant features 120-year-old Chicago brick walls, wood booths, copper ceilings, an outdoor patio, and an old-fashioned soda fountain that serves shakes and more adult beverages.
7. STATS, Atlanta
Atlanta's Sports Radio 790 The Zone broadcasts live from a glass-enclosed booth created for the station's specific use. As the booth is visible from the street, passersby snag a sneak peek at the pros as they broadcast.
6. ESPN Zone, Los Angeles
You don't necessarily come to this slick, high-tech sports bar for the food, but ESPN Zone at L.A. Live offers a large menu of all-American fare, from the requisite chicken wings and cheese fries to start, to entrées that include baby-back ribs, pastas and steaks. There is a host of burger options -- including the Sports Center Burger with a nine-ounce Angus patty -- and Philly fans can find a cheesesteak, too, even if it doesn't measure up to Pat's or Geno's.
5. Lagasse's Stadium, Las Vegas
TV star-chef Emeril Lagasse gives the sportsbook concept a gourmet makeover at Lagasse's Stadium in The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino, which features theatre-style seating in front of a 10- by 20-foot projection wall, as well as one-hundred-plus HD TV's. For the ultimate fan experience, book one of the elevated "sky boxes" overlooking the stadium, or a "luxury box" private room with pool tables and video game consoles. Game-day grub includes Buffalo wings, nachos, pizzas, burgers and steaks, along with a complement of beers and specialty sports-themed cocktails.
4. Nemo's Bar & Grill, Detroit, Mich.
It used to be a family could stop for a meal here, then walk to Tiger Stadium for a baseball game. Sadly, the Tigers have moved to Comerica Park on the other side of downtown, but Nemo's now arranges buses to the games, as well as to Lions football, Red Wings hockey games, and other major concert and entertainment events. Customers appreciate that kind of service, as well as one of the better burgers in town.
3. Ricky's Sports Theatre & Grill, San Leandro, Calif.
Everyone, including kids, is welcome at Ricky's Sports Theatre & Grill, but rooting for the Oakland Raiders is encouraged. This San Leandro sports bar practically bleeds silver and black, as evidenced by the dishes that pay tribute to past and present Raiders coaches and players, such as John Madden's T-bone steak and the Jim Otto sandwich made with smoked turkey, bacon, guacamole and cheese on grilled sourdough.
2. The Sportsgrille, Nashville, Tenn.
Inside the Hilton Nashville Downtown, this haven for casual sports fans and stat crunchers alike offers much more than typical game-day fare. Each starter and entrée on the menu comes with a wine or beer suggestion, and while the food isn't breaking any new ground, there are some creative takes on traditional favorites, like the meatloaf and potato "sundae," a piled-high tower of hearty goodness.
1. Stadium View, Green Bay, Wisc.
Let's face it: Stadium View is about more than just the food. This sports bar and restaurant is the place to party -- and maybe grab a bite to eat -- during Packers season or after a long week at the office. No matter when you come, the beer is always flowing, and there's a menu with pizzas, hot wings and the Chicken Booyah soup to sustain. On Fridays, try the all-you-can-eat fish fry, with your choice of baked, breaded or beer-battered cod, sided by a potato and homemade coleslaw.

"Trestin is dealing with ongoing medical situation within his family and has asked for his release from the club so that he can remain in the Oakland area," said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono. "By releasing Trestin, he can not only remain close to his family during this time, but also continue to have an opportunity to support them by playing for the San Jose SabreCats of the AFL. We're disappointed that he will not be with our organization, but we support his decision to put family ahead football at this point in his career."
George appeared in 16 games over two seasons with the Lions and recorded 39 defensive tackles.
WHL DRAFT LOTTERY RESULTS
The WHL Bantam Draft Lottery involved the six non-playoff teams (Calgary, Kamloops, Lethbridge, Regina, Seattle, Swift Current) from the 2010-11 season. A team can move up a maximum of two positions in the Bantam Draft. Only one ball is drawn in the Lottery.
The Lottery selection process was performed by Chris Marra from KPMG. The 2011 WHL Bantam Draft will be held in Calgary, AB, on Thursday, May 5, 2011.
A Kamloops Blazers ball was drawn first in the lottery, meaning the Calgary Hitmen will have the 1st overall selection in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. The Blazers will move up two spots as a result of their ball being drawn in the lottery, and will make the 4th overall selection in the 2011 Bantam Draft.
The Swift Current Broncos will have the 2nd pick, and the Seattle Thunderbirds drop from the 5th pick to the 6th pick as a result of Kamloops’ ball being drawn.
The Lethbridge Hurricanes will have the 3rd overall pick, having acquired Regina’s first-round pick in a trade last season, and will also have the 5th overall selection in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.
The order of the second round and all other rounds will be the inverse order of final 2010-11 WHL regular-season standings.
Players eligible for the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft will be 1996-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
WILLIAMSON NAMED U-18 COACH
It was also announced that Dale Hawerchuk (Toronto, Ont.), head coach and director of hockey operations with the OHL's Barrie Colts, and Mark Lamb (Cadillac, Sask.), head coach and general manager of the WHL's Swift Current Broncos, have been named assistant coaches. ESKIMOS RELEASE ROMERO
A veteran of six CFL seasons, four with Edmonton, Romero began his pro career with the Esks in 2001. The Eastern Washington product joined the Miami Dolphins in 2002 and spent four years in the NFL. He returned to the CFL with Montreal for the 2006 and '07 seasons. Romero signed as a free agent with Edmonton in 2008 and enjoyed his best CFL season with 30 defensive tackles, six sacks and four tackles for losses. He was named a CFL West Division All-Star in 2008 and 2009. Last season, Romero started in 15 games and was named to the CFLPA All-Star team.
In announcing the move, Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman says, "In a salary cap era, the reality is we're often faced with difficult choices. It's a great game, but often times a very challenging business when age and economics come into play. That said, Dario's toughness and professionalism are well documented. He leaves with our respect and best wishes."
DURANT ON SPORTS CAGE
ON THE OFF-SEASON
It's been going well. I've been trying to adjust to the climate here in Saskatchewan. I've heard that this is one of the toughest winters you've had so if I can get through this, I'm doing good.
ON THE 2011 SEASON
I'm excited. I feel like we can pick up right where we left off last year, being in the Grey Cup. Losing Andy Fantuz is definitely tough, but other than that I think everything is lined up for another great season so I'm excited about it.
ON THE LOSS OF FANTUZ
It's going to be very tough. We all know he was the best receiver we had. It'll be a tough task replacing him but we're looking forward to it. It's a challenge and I'm sure the guys who are next in line are looking forward to it. It gives me a chance to spread the ball around a little bit more and not have to look for Andy in certain situations.
ON COACH GREG MARSHALL
I've talked to him a couple times. It's a great move for us and his staff is tremendous. It's good to have Coach Berry back and work with him for another season.
ON HIS MOTIVATION FOR 2011
Every day I wake up I think about what I could've done differently or how I could have prepared myself better. Everyone's goal is to be a champion and although I won a Grey Cup in 2007, I want one that's in my hands. I think this is the year we get it.
ON THE LAST OFFENSIVE PLAY OF THE 2010 GREY CUP
I'll never stop trying to make plays. I consider myself a playmaker. I broke the first tackle and thought I could get the ball out of bounds but one of their guys had a good hold of me and the ball sailed on me. I'm not one to put blame on one play. A lot of plays could have changed the outcome. But that's in the past and if we're in that situation again, I believe we'll come out victorious.
ON THE BIGGEST OPPOSITION IN 2011
I feel we'll be the team to beat in the West. It would be an injustice to my team to pick anyone else. I feel like we'll be on top as long as I'm here and that's what I'll tell anyone. The West has always been tough and there's not one team you can pick as the toughest. As long as we come out on top, that's all that matters.
TICATS SCOUTING NEWS
Danny McManus has been promoted to Head U.S. Scout. McManus has spent the last two seasons as the Ticats Southeast Regional Scout after one season on the team's coaching staff as an Offensive Assistant. As a player, McManus enjoyed a successful 17-year career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Edmonton Eskimos, Ticats and Calgary Stampeders.
Drew Allemang has been promoted to Coordinator of Canadian Player Development and Head Canadian Scout after serving as Football Operations Coordinator for the past two seasons. Allemang will organize and execute the Ticats scouting strategy in Canada and will lead the team's preparation for the CFL Canadian Draft.
Shawn Burke has been appointed as Director of Football Operations. Burke has spent five years with the Ticats, most recently as Director of Communications and Community Relations. In his new role, Burke will be responsible for managing the salary management system, handling day-to-day football operations duties, and overseeing the Ticats community initiatives.
GILLIES ON HEADSHOTS
ON THE COOKE HIT:
"It really is typical of what's going on these days. These guys have lost total respect for each other. The guy's a pretty good player, but he certainly paid the price today. $220,000 is quite severe. But if you're going to eliminate those types of hits, those elbow pads I must tell you, have got to go. They are lethal weapons. They're like steel caps on the guys' arms and it doesn't take much to do a lot of damage. But guys gotta know if you're gonna pull a stunt like that, you'll pay dearly."
COMPARING TODAY'S HOCKEY TO THE 70s:
"I played 13 years without a helmet and I got hit in the head once or twice in all that time. I don't ever remember going into the corner and getting my head run into the glass. We had a lot more respect for each others' heads. Maybe it's because guys weren't wearing helmets. Today, I guess they feel they aren't vulnerable but obviously they are. My buddies and I say back in the day you'd take a blow to the head and get right back out there after a couple of Aspirin. But Pat Lafontaine is a good buddy, a neighbour of mine here on Long Island, and concussions ended his career. He says shoulder-to-shoulder hits are fine, but headshots are getting out of control.
"In the 70s the Flyers were a tough bunch, they really were. My rookie year was '75 and they'd just won two Stanley Cups. Going into Philly back then was an experience but we set the ground rules because we had a tough team too. Back in those days to have a bench-clearing brawl wasn't the most abnormal thing to have happen. The Flyers were tough, there was some stickwork, but I just don't remember the craziness of going for the head or trying to smash guys' heads through the glass. Don't get me wrong, hitting back then was just as good as it is now, but nobody went for the head like they do now. The seamless glass has created a lot of problems. It's like getting hit against concrete. There's no give in the boards or the glass. We won four Cups in a row but we had glass that had a lot of give to it. We put in new glass just before our drive for a fifth Cup and we had a lot of injuries along the way. I think it was all because of the tougher, stronger glass so when guys get hit it's like being hit against a block."
ON THE CURRENT STATE OF THE ISLANDERS:
"You watch what's happened the last half of the season, we have a great young nucleus of players there led by Jon Tavares. He's the second-best coming to Wayne Gretzky. He's taken some time, but he's only 19, 20. Josh Bailey, Blake Comeau, Kyle Okposo, Mark Streit on defense, if they can ever get Dipietro back to where he was before his injuries, this is going to be a great little hockey team. I watched them play on the weekend against Florida, and the Islanders played hard for 60 and won in a shootout. They've got one of the best records in the league the past 30-40 games. They got Michael Grabner from Florida and he can fly. The problem we have is re-signing these guys and get them committed to playing here long-term. I'm kind of excited, they're fun to watch. I don't go to a lot of the games but I watch them all on TV. Matt Moulson, he's another one I forgot. They got some good players and there's a real good future for this team."

COOKE SUSPENDED
Matt Cooke has been stiffly penalized by the National Hockey League for his blindside elbow on New York Rangers defenceman Ryan McDonagh.Cooke was suspended Monday for the balance of the regular season — the Penguins’ last 10 games — and the first round of the post-season, should the Penguins qualify (a near certainty).
The incident occurred midway through the third period of Sunday’s game with the score deadlocked 1-1. The Rangers scored twice on the ensuing five-minute power play en route to a 5-2 victory.
Penguins owner Mario Lemieux and Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby — who has missed the second half of the season with post-concussion symptoms — have both been vocal opponents of blindside hits and hits to the head.
Cooke’s suspension is the longest in Penguins history.

AVALANCHE SIGN ELLIOTT

SASKATOON -- Blades defenceman Stefan Elliott has signed with the Colorado Avalanche to on an entry-level contract. Elliott was Colorado’s third selection (second round, 49th overall) in the 2009 Entry Draft.
Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman released the following statement, “Stefan is another one of our talented young defensemen in the Avalanche system. He has put together a strong final season of junior hockey and we look forward to him beginning his pro career with our organization.”
TICATS/ESKS TRADE
ARGOS EXTEND BOYD
Commented Argonauts General Manager and Head Coach Jim Barker, "Physical. Relentless. Dynamic. Those are the words I would use to describe Cory Boyd's style of play. He is the kind of player other teams do not want to play against and the kind of player you want on your side. We are very excited to extend Cory's current contract through 2013. He proved to be a vital part of our offence and locking up key players is a core part of our philosophy. With one year under his belt, and the understanding of what is needed to train and condition for this league, we look forward to seeing the even greater things Cory is capable of - both on and off the field - in the seasons to come."
THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE
It's back to the grind today after a busy Saskatchewan weekend. In Regina circles it's rather slow right now with another Pats' season over with and no football to discuss. However today on the blog we have plenty of photos from Saturday's full day of events in Plenty and Dodsland, Saskatchewan plus some notes and observations near the bottom.
It should be noted that Amber Holland and her team of Kim Schneider, Tammy Schneider and Heather Kalenchuk have lost their third straight game to drop to 1-3 at the Capital One World Women's Curling Championship in Esbjerg, Denmark. Holland lost to Scotland 7-3 this morning after losing a pair of games Sunday losing to Russia 9-4 and Denmark 8-5.
I'm also thrilled to inform you that Hockey Hall of Famer and one of the greatest Regina Pats ever, Clark Gillies, will be on the Sports Cage live today at 4:30pm on 620 CKRM.Now here are some shots from Dodsland/Plenty:
They also listen to the Sports Cage regularly in that area. One guy said "I don't buy a tractor or a truck if it doesn't get 620!"
It was my kind of meal at the Plenty Community Centre. Barbecued steak, mashed potatoes, corn and all the fixings.
Auctioneer Ted Burton did a bang up job. Their live auction items included a pair of Toews' jerseys and one from Ryan Smyth.
Schultzie paraded his old 96 around for auction..
Narco deep in thought. He'll join us on Rider Monday on the Sports Cage on 620 CKRM today at 5:35 pm.
A dangerous question came out of the always-popular Q & A segment. One local lady in the back of the room asked "How many Plenty cougars can you fit in your limo?"---
Random Thoughts & Notes:- Ken Stromberg and a bunch of good ole Regina boys took in the Oilers game Saturday night at Rexall Place. They showed their support for another Reginan, as shown in this photo sent in by Kenny.
- The WHL playoff pairings are set. Here they are for round 1:
EAST: PA vs Saskatoon, Edmonton vs Red Deer, Brandon vs Medicine Hat, Moose Jaw vs Kootenay
WEST: Everett vs Portland, Prince George vs Kelowna, Spokane vs Chilliwack, Vancouver vs Tri-City
- A WHL fan did a simulation of the playoffs on NHL 2011 from EA Sports. Here's the outcome: WHL FINAL - Kootenay defeats Spokane 4-1
- The Regina Pats handed out their year-end awards prior to Friday night's home game against the Saskatoon Blades. Here were the winners:
Unsung hero-Art Bidlevskii
Hub Bishop Memorial Trophy (Most Sportsmanlike)-Brandon Davidson
Scholastic Player of the Year-Tyler Borstmayer
Bill Hicke Memorial Award (Most Popular)-Garrett Mitchell
M.P. (Mike) Kartusch Memorial Award (Community Involvement)-Garrett Mitchell
Nick Pappas Memorial Award (Rookie of the year)-Matt Hewitt
Charles L Johnston Award (Top Defenceman)-Brandon Davidson
Regina Pats Player of the Year-Jordan Weal
Torchy Shell Top Scorer Award – Jordan Weal
Molson Cup 3-Star Award - Jordan Weal
- From all accounts Mac 'N Cheese Shaker Night was a success at the Pats game. No goals were scored until the third period but there were tons of kids in attendance clutching their Kraft Dinner boxes ready to make some noise. It was good to take in the game with my Dad and it was very well attended, with over 5,000 in the house.
- Pats forward Jordan Weal had an exceptional season and it should mean a lot that he nearly attained 100 points without Jordan Eberle riding shotgun. He's a fabulous hockey player.
- It meant a lot that I was the first media person Pats captain Garrett Mitchell called once he signed with the Washington Capitals. The call came in while we were on the limo to Plenty. Schultzie was impressed.
- It was great to hear Rob Carnie call the third period of the last-ever Warriors home regular season game in the Crushed Can Friday night. Carns is gold.
- Ran into Kelowna Rockets scout Graham Tuer at the Cooperators Centre on Sunday. He informed me his son Al is now working as a pro scout for the Florida Panthers. The Coop was an anthill of scouts from just about every WHL team for SaskFirst.
- Actually the Cooperators Centre was a beehive all weekend long with all six sheets of ice being used for minor and rec hockey plus ringette. What an incredible addition that facility has been to Regina, plus the adjoining Credit Union Eventplex which was teeming with soccer players. The hotels, restaurants and stores in the city were packed and the gas stations were humming. That's what these new facilities do for a city.
- I got a Rider loonie in my change in the Cooperators Centre lounge on Sunday. I'm surprised somebody gave it up.
- It was hilarious to see that our midnight pitstop in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on the way home from Plenty ended up on Facebook. A guy wrote that two big white guys and a black guy all with Grey Cup rings were spotted in the 7/11, and he was trying to figure out who we were!
- 5 Burning Questions Facing The Roughriders in 2011:
1) How will the Riders fare under the leadership of new HC Greg Marshall? I think they'll do well and challenge for first-place. He reminds me a lot of Kent Austion going into 2007; a rookie coach with a fiery reputation who's dying to have the opportunity to finally call the shots.
2) Who will replace Andy Fantuz in the offense? Right now all signs point to Jordan Sisco. 83 had 30 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie year of 2006. That certainly seems attainable for Sisco, who will benefit from having been with the Riders for half of the 2010 season.
3) Will the special teams see an improvement under new coach Craig Dickenson? There's nowhere to go but up.
4) Can Darian Durant start every game for the Riders again in 2011? Let's hope so. Ryan Dinwiddie and Cole Bergquist weren't used much in 2010 and it will be interesting to see if any new QBs are brought in to challenge in camp.
5) Can the Roughriders win a third straight Western Division championship? Yes.
- Roughrider DE Brent Hawkins is working as a personal trainer at Gold's Gym South in Regina. He said on Sunday he wants to train me. Quite honestly, I'm afraid to.
- We're in planning sessions for In The Huddle on Access 7 for the 2011 season. I'd love to get viewer feedback on the show in the comments section of this post.
