REUNITED AGAIN **UPDATE WITH TEUBERT COMMENTS

Amongst today's NHL trade deadline deals, the L.A. Kings have acquired F Dustin Penner from the Oilers for D Colten Teubert, a 2011 1st round draft pick and a 2012 draft pick.

"It's pretty crazy," Teubert told 620 CKRM on Monday. "It's kind of a whirlwind right now because I wasn't expecting it but it's part of the hockey business. To get the opportunity to go to Edmonton, I'm really excited. I'm kind of speechless. I don't understand why Ebs doesn't want to get rid of me. I think he had something to do with this because he misses me. I don't know. I'm just really excited about my future with the Oilers."

Teubert said he found out about the deal while on a day off.

"It was kind of weird," Teubert reported. "I was playing video games with a bunch of the guys and we had our computers open and it came up on the TSN ticker. I was like 'did I just get traded?'. It was kind of confusing."

Oddly enough, Teubert still hasn't heard any word from the Oilers since the deal.

"I honestly haven't talked to them. My phone is blowing up right now. I'm just waiting to talk to GM Steve Tambellini to see what happens from here. I'm really excited but I'm speechless because I haven't been traded in my career. I'm just looking forward to an opportunity with the Oilers and the (AHL's) Barons."

RIDERS RELEASE OMARR MORGAN

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have released import defensive back Omarr Morgan.

“We thank Omarr for his years of service to the team and the tremendous leadership he provided on the field and in the locker room,” stated Vice-President of Football Operations Ken Miller. “We will miss his day-to-day contributions and wish him all the best.”

The veteran has spent a decade with the Green and White and played in 174 regular season games. In that time he has amassed 556 defensive tackles, 36 special teams tackles, 26 interceptions for 399 yards and 10 fumble recoveries.

*The Roughriders also announced they released defensive back Willie Byrd from the roster.

***UPDATE

The Amber Holland national champion curling team was supposed to return to Regina tonight however due to travel difficulties, they are stuck in Moncton, NB. A spokesman from the Callie Curling Club told 620 CKRM the team may not return to Regina until Wednesday.

THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE

Although we got a brief weather reprieve on the weekend, the "winter blahs" have definitely set in.

How do I know? Because people are getting snippy with each other, doing and saying crazy things. It always happens around this time of year.

Today's MMG will demonstrate how people are getting punchy, suffering from cabin fever, and ready for winter to end. It was quite a week!

However one guy who certainly wasn't cranky was Matt Dunigan, who delivered a fun, light-hearted yet entertaining speech at Friday night's University of Regina Rams fundraising dinner at Queensbury Centre. While some people were critical of his address, the sports guys I spoke with came away quite impressed. Those are guys like Mike Blaisdell, Andrew Greene, Todd Ripplinger, Warren Woods, Larry Mueller, etc.

Below is a collection of quotes and comments from the Canadian Football Hall of Famer and CFL On TSN commentator:

- Dunigan has two regrets from his Hall of Fame CFL career: leaving the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1994, and never having played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "I feel my mentality would have fit in well with the Aldags, Poleys and Jurasins. I would've liked to 'run with those boys'".

- "What would I tell someone in the Rams Nation that you don't already know? I'll talk about how it all started and like most everybody in football, it started when somebody told me I couldn't do it."

- Dunigan was born in Ohio but moved with the family to Dallas in grade 6. He grew up a block-and-a-half from the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility.

- "(Rams coach) Frank McCrystal is like a bum on a baloney sandwich, to quote Scott Schultz. You just can't get rid of the guy!"

- "How many here have seen the show Friday Night Lights? My brother and I lived it. In Ohio we didn't know colour but in Dallas, there was a ton of racial tension. My brother and I fought for our lives in school. We didn't even know why we were fighting, but we fought anyways. For punishment we got to chose from four paddles to get whooped with by the principal. Once your ass was no longer on fire, you went out and practiced football."

- "I wanted to be a wide receiver, not a quarterback. I told my Mom not to tell the coaches I could throw the football. She didn't, but I became a QB when I had to throw back the footballs that the quarterbacks overthrew to me."

- Dunigan's high school football league drew crowds of 45,000 to Texas Stadium for playoff games. Unfortunately, Matt's team never made it that far in playoffs.

- He went to Louisiana Tech because all the Texas schools said he was too short. The coach who recruited him at his house chewed tobacco and swallowed the juice. Having DUNIGAN on the back of his jersey meant he was playing for his family, and wanted them to be proud.

- He was a two-time All-American during his career at Louisiana Tech. He got the starting job in his freshman year replacing the starting quarterback in the Orange Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes. "My pee was hot," Dunigan commented, which had several in attendance scratching their heads. Rider DE Shomari Williams said later, "Barrin Simpson says the same thing. Must me a southern thing."

- In 1983 in Edmonton the Eskimos veterans chose who made the team, not the coaches. In Dunigan's rookie year, he and Blake Dermott were the only rookies to make the team.

- Dunigan appeared to get choked up when discussing his late-game interception in the 1988 Grey Cup. "Those things stay with you," Dunigan revealed.

- He was a head linesman four years ago for a CFL exhibition game in Hamilton. "If you've got football in you, be an official," Dunigan advised. "You'll be amazed at how great it is, and the interaction you'll have with players."

- "I challenge all you Rams and Riders in the room to get better everyday and outwork your opponents. While they're getting fat and happy, you should be busting your tail to be better than your opposition".

- "I prefer to be positive. I prefer that the glass be half-full rather than half-empty and to look at the world through rose-coloured glasses. My heads not in the clouds or anything, but I'm a positive person."

- At this point, he loses his place and train of thought. "Welcome to Matt Dunigan World!" he laughed. "I've been dealing with post-concussion syndrome since 1996."

- "Concussions in football? You know what you're getting into when you sign up. It's frustrating especially when you're trying to entertain 700 people and you lose your friggin' spot!" The crowd erupts in a round of applause for support.

- "Be wherever you're at," Dunigan advised. "Wherever you are, give it your all. I traveled from Georgia to Toronto for five years to do TSN. I found myself thinking about coaching at Valdosta when I was in Toronto and vice versa. It almost cost me my marriage. I just wasn't very good. Be where you're at with that passion. You'll get more out of your workouts, your community work, heck even with your dates."

- "I challenge you to throw that on the table and concentrate on that."

**That was the key point of his address. He went on to talk about his brief coaching stint with the Calgary Stampeders, his TV show Roadside Grill on The Food Network and told funny stories about the CFL On TSN panel. Then, he posed for what seemed like hundreds of photos with fans.

All in all, he did a great job. Way to go Matt!

An article in the Hamilton Spectator by Ticats beat writer Drew Edwards caught my eye on the weekend. It was about new Ticats assistant GM Joe Womack who spent four seasons with the Roughriders.

"Womack has spent his first six weeks on the Ticats payroll getting up to speed on the team's personnel and negotiation list players, scouting U.S. bowl games and lining up American free agents for workouts such as the one he held in Seattle on Friday. He'll be in Toronto next weekend for the CFL evaluation camp for draft-eligible Canadian players.

After coming from a situation in Saskatchewan where he clashed with head coach and vice-president of football operations Ken Miller, Womack says open discussion between all levels of the organization is remarkable.

"I've been in pro football for 40 years and been in just about every situation that you can be and all of them helped mould me," Womack said. "Hamilton is one of the least political, ego-less environments that I've ever been around. I couldn't be happier."

*Womack has made similar comments regarding Ken Miller since he arrived in Hamilton. I wonder how Ken feels about it?

People acting crazy? How about this snippet from nationalfootballpost.com:

"At what is annually the largest gathering of NFL types in the league, St. Louis Rams scout Luke Driscoll has gotten himself in a jam.

Driscoll, 33, was arrested early Friday morning at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. According to Fox 2 of St. Louis, he was urinating on a building.

Driscoll, an 11-year member of the Rams' staff and a college scout for the last six years, has been charged with public nudity and intoxication. There is no word if he has returned to St. Louis. Driscoll is subject to discipline from the NFL under the league's personal conduct policy."

Football isn't the only sport limited to people seemingly at the end of their rope. The general manager of the WHL's Kootenay Ice, Jeff Chynoweth, took a swipe at his own team's fans in an interview with Kelowna Rockets broadcaster Regan Bartel. Bartel asked Chynoweth if the fans in Cranbrook, BC are getting excited for the Ice's playoff run.

"No they're not," Chynoweth huffed. "They're actually awful. I'm not very happy about it. We're headed for our eighth 40-win season in 13 years here and it's a little frustrating to make a trade like that (to acquire Cody Eakin) and people say 'oh you make a trade like that, you're gonna get more people'. Well for the most part we haven't.

"We had a big crowed against Vancouver Feb. 1 and we had a big crowd the other night, our two biggest of the year. Our attendance is down 14.5% the past two years and it's a concern. It's not like we're putting a product on the ice that's not competitive. Year in and year out we're one of the top teams. We've moved four coaches on to pro hockey in eight years, we've made the playoffs for 13 years in a row - the longest active streak in the WHL - and we've been above .500 for 12 years.

"You don't get access to top-end players when you're drafting #13-22 every year and there's a lot of things that go into it. What's going to happen when we have an off-year? We haven't had one and hopefully we don't for a number of years but it will happen. That's the nature of our business."

Bartel asked Chynoweth if perhaps the Kootenay fans have been spoiled with the team's success.
"I think about that and I've heard it many times," Chynoweth admitted. "You wonder if they're used to that, you don't know. We live in a community of 20,000 people and there's not a lot of things to do. We're not Kelowna and you don't ski at night and you're not going to gamble all the time. This is live entertainment, affordably priced. We're missing a demographic. We've tried different (marketing) things but right now I guess we have to work harder to get people back.

SASKATCHEWAN CHAMPIONS!

Saskatchewan's Amber Holland rink is the 2011 Canadian Womens Curling Champion after an 8-7 victory over defending champion Jennifer Jones Sunday in Charlottetown, PEI. And what an ending! Jones had the final stone but botched her shot, leaving Holland lying one for the winning point. Way to go Amber and team! It seemed like a brief handshake at the end didn't it?

PATS 4 BRONCOS 3

The Regina Pats ran their record to a perfect 7-0 against the rival Swift Current Broncos with a 4-3 victory at the Credit Union I-Plex Friday night. In the process the Pats climbed back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

THE STORY: The Pats had been off since Monday's 3-2 victory over Calgary in the WHL Outdoor Game and fell behind 2-1 to the Broncos after the opening period in this one. What a pickup Neigum has been. The victory pulled the Pats to within three points of P.A. for the final playoff spot with 10 games left in the regular season.

CANADA 10 SASKATCHEWAN 9

Defending champion Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg needs one more win for her fourth straight Scotties Tournament Of Hearts skipping title, tying the legendary Colleen Jones.

With the loss, her third of the competition, Holland dropped into Saturday’s 3 p.m. semi-final against the winner of an earlier playoff match between Ottawa’s Rachel Homan and Heather Smith-Dacey of Halifax.

FRIDAY RODSERVATIONS

- Brrrrrrr! Enough is enough of this cold weather.  Who ticked off Mother Nature and what did we do to deserve this?  It rained all summer and snowed everyday all winter.  When it's not snowing, it's minus-35.  ENOUGH!  Saturday it'll be -12 and Sunday -11.  Oh, and snow is forecast as well.

- Speaking of the Pats, they're on the road to Swift Current tonight in a big East Division game. 620 CKRM has the broadcast with a 7:30 faceoff (7:05 pm Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show).

- All anyone needs to know about the Scotties is that Saskatchewan's Amber Holland faces Team Canada's Jennifer Jones rink in tonight's 1-2 Page Playoff Game in Charlottetown, PEI. TSN has the call. GO AMBER!

- Why not head to the CKHS and catch some university basketball action Friday and Saturday nights? The U of R Cougar womens team hosts the University of Victoria in a best-of-3 with games tonight and tomorrow (and Sunday if necessary).  We'll be there Saturday.

- High Impact Wrestling tonight at the Victoria Club.  Get there early to ensure a seat ... they're always soldout.

- Canadian Football Hall of Famer and TSN analyst Matt Dunigan is in town for tonight's Regina Rams fundraising dinner at Queensbury Centre. At this moment I'm not certain we're going but if we do, I'll post pictures. Lots of people are looking forward to hearing what Matt has to say.

- On the Sports Cage this week, Dunigan picked the Roughriders to win the West Division in 2011.

- It's Four Seasons Football Friday in the Sports Cage today on 620 CKRM. Our guests include Wally Buono and Chris Szarka.

- Time to renew your license plates?  Click on Scott Schultz's smiling face on the banner ad above and get started!  Be sure to select Schultz-Gareau Insurance from the drop-down menu.  Thanks for your support...

- Sources say Jim Barker will be named 2010 CFL Coach of the Year.

- This whole "new entertainment facility" has had more twists, turns, ups and downs than the Screamer roller-coaster at Disneyland. Right now we're in a low point. It's been an emotional pendulum for us fans so I can't imagine what it's been like for the politicians like Ken Cheveldayoff, Brad Wall and Pat Fiacco.

- Want to know what Tom Lukiwski's stance on the stadium is? Tune into 620 CKRM's Newsline at Noon today. The Lumsden Lake Centre Conservative MP will be Craig Wallebeck's guest. That will be worth tuning in to.

- The Edmonton Eskimos announced this week they earned $5.1-million from hosting the 2010 Grey Cup. That's the most money ever made by that event. Can Vancouver break the record in 2011?

- Poor Kerry Joseph. He's left out in the cold again after the B.C. Lions signed back-up QB Jarious Jackson to a new deal last night, reportedly worth $140,000 per season.

- Danny Barrett is the new running backs coach at the University of Central Florida. He sure is moving around a lot.

- As you likely know, Bart Andrus is the new offensive coordinator of the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL. He has instructed the Nighthawks' P.R. staff that he will not be doing any interviews with Canadian media.

- Industry news: Sportsradio 1290 in Winnipeg as stolen the Hustler and Lawless Show from CJOB.  They signed a new deal this week.   How many in Winnipeg are listening to this new all-sports station?  I'm telling you sports radio is the way to go.

- There are rumours Brett Favre will be part of the cast for the 12th season of Dancing With The Stars on ABC.

- Courtesy the Wolf 104.9's Ryan Mochoruk:
It's the French sports bar "La Cage Aux Sports" or "The Sports Cage". This sports bar is in Montreal's Bell Centre and was the inspiration for our talkshow on CKRM. Small surprise there's a guy standing out front of the arena smoking. Walking through downtown Montreal makes you feel like you're wandering through a forest fire. Everybody smokes.

- Ryan paid $16.50 for a tour of the Bell Centre. What a rip-off! Although he says it was the best $16.50 he ever spent. Anyone want a tour of CKRM, the Wolf and Lite 92? ;)

- Two former Regina Pats were in the news this week. Colorado Eagles assistant coach Greg Pankewicz was suspended for the rest of the season for losing his cool and some of his clothes during a game last weekend. The Drayton Valley, Alberta product, who played for the Pats from 1989-91, became incensed Saturday when a linesman tackled an Eagles player after a fight broke out in a win over the Mississippi RiverKings. "Pank" threw his jacket, shirt, undershirt and shoes onto the ice. What makes a coach want to take his clothes off when he gets mad?

- Also former Pats all-star goalie Chad Mercier was named the AJHL's Coach of the Year on Wednesday. He's the first Bonnyville Pontiacs coach to win the award. Chad is my daughter's godfather, so that tells you what I think of him.

- TSN's broadcast of the Jones/Overton-Clapham round robin game at the Scotties Wednesday night was the 3rd most-watched Scotties game ever (non-playoff) with close to 650,000 viewers. Long-time curling follower Mal Isaac was on the Sports Cage this week and said Jennifer Jones handled the whole issue of releasing Overton-Clapham poorly. "The men would've settled in under the stands," Mal said gruffly.

- Last night CBS scrapped the rest of this season's filming of "Two And A Half Men" due to star Charlie Sheen's "conduct and condition". Clearly it's the #1 show on television and what that tells me is the public doesn't care what you personal demons are (Sheen) as long as you show up for work on time and are funny or entertaining once you get there.

- Molson Canadian is set to become the official beer of the NHL. The seven-year deal was announced on Tuesday. The North American agreement with Molson Coors in Canada and MillerCoors in the U.S. will see the sister companies heavily represented across the NHL calendar beginning next season.

- Congratulations to long-time CKRM agriculture news director Jim Smalley. He's been honoured with the RTNDA's Lifetime Achievement Award. The Corning, Saskatchewan product (85 miles southest of Regina) began his radio career in 1973 in Dryden, Ontario and included stops in CFOB Fort Francis, CFSL Weyburn, and CKCK and CKRM Regina.

Women’s Track & Field (CIS Ranking: No. 9) – Chelsea Valois leads the Cougars with CIS standards in the pentathlon, the long jump, and the high jump as the U of R looks to improve on its fifth-place finish from last season. Merissa Margetts is the conference’s top-ranked athlete in the 300-metre dash, while Valois ranks No. 1 in the long jump. Amanda Ruller (60-metre dash), Nicole Breker (triple jump), and the 4x200-metre relay team are all ranked No. 2 in Canada West entering this weekend’s championship.

Women’s Volleyball (CIS Ranking: No. 10) – The Cougars travelled to Langley, B.C. for a Canada West quarterfinal series against Trinity Western, but were defeated 3-0 on both Thursday and Friday by the Spartans to put an end to their 2010-11 season. With no fifth-year players, the Cougars expect to return virtually their entire roster next season.

Men’s Hockey – The Cougars finished the 2010-11 season with a pair of road losses to Calgary, losing 2-0 on Friday night and 3-1 on Saturday. Brandon Blair notched the team’s lone goal on Saturday, scoring the first of his career on a shot from the point that caromed off the end boards and off Dinos goalie Dustin Butler and in.

THURSDAY SPORTS CAGE AUDIO

Thursday's Sports Cage on 620 CKRM was a presentation of our friends at Access Communications. The Silver Fox Kelly Remple joined me in hour one and our guests included AJHL Coach of the Year Chad Mercier, Hamilton Tiger-Cats broadcaster Rick Zamprien and U of R Athletics Director Dick White. In hour two, TSN anchor/curling announcer Brian Mudryk dropped by to talk Scotties. Rider broadcaster John Lynch was with me in-studio as well, and we chatted with Rider linebacker Sean Lucas. You can download the show here:
HOUR ONE:

Q & A WITH SEAN LUCAS

Here's the transcript of our chat with Rider linebacker Sean Lucas for today's Sports Cage on 620 CKRM. I asked him about re-signing with the Roughriders this week for two more seasons:

LUCAS: I'm happy to get it done. Saskatchewan is where I always wanted to be but I had a few other options so I just wanted to make sure I was making the right decision. Just the familiarity with the team and the city is what made it attractive. We were able to come to a reasonable agreement. The grass isn't always greener on the other side so I thought it was best to stay where I wanted to play and the fans appreciate the game. I have a good relationship with the coaches and the other guys in the locker room.

RP: There have been a lot of changes with this team since you were a rookie in 2006...

LUCAS: Yah. We've been though a few head coaches, a few different GMs and different players but the character of the team has stayed the same. They've done a good job in that aspect, of bringing in character guys. If you don't change the culture, we'll continue to be successful.

RP: There are a lot of guys who came in 2006 like yourself, Darian, Tad Kornegay and Lance Frazier to name a few. Do you guys have a special bond or do you even talk about that?

LUCAS: We definitely do. There's definitely a bond. It's brought us a lot closer together. I've spent time with Darian this off-season and we talk a lot during the off-season. We want to play with each other and we know each others abilities. Even when things are going the greatest, we are still good friends. We don't have locker room breakdowns like other teams do and I'm glad to keep everybody together.

RP: Can you talk about the hunger to win the Grey Cup in 2011? 2007 seems like quite awhile ago.

LUCAS: Yah it's back aways. We've been to the last two Grey Cups. I wish the outcomes were different but you play every year with the same goal; to get to the Grey Cup. We've got the right people and guidance to do that so the hunger is definitely there. There's a bitter taste in our mouth from the last two Grey Cups but we feel real good about our chances.

RP: What makes the combination of Richie Hall and Gary Etcheverry work so well with your defense?

LUCAS: It's just different ideas. It's hard to game plan us because you don't know what we're going to do. Richie thinks one way and Coach Etch thinks another so that keeps teams off-balance that you're playing. It's good to confuse the quarterbacks and we've been successful with that in the past.

RP: What will keep you busy between now and training camp?

LUCAS: Just training. That's the biggest thing in this league. We're getting into March and this is when you turn up your off-season training. The most important part of your season is the off-season and a lot of people don't understand that. It's the work you put in now that keeps you healthy during the season.

HOLLAND 9-1

Saskatchewan's Amber Holland is now 9-1 at the Scottie's Tournament of Hearts in Charlottetown, PEI. The Regina skip defeated New Brunswick 7-6 this morning and in the process clinched top spot in the round robin. Saskatchewan takes on B.C. later this afternoon at 5:30. TSN curling announcer Brian Mudryk will join me on 620 CKRM's Sports Cage today to talk Scotties, and we'll also be joined by AJHL Coach of the Year Chad Mercier and Hamilton Tiger-Cats play-by-play man Rick Zamprien.

GETZLAF FAMILY GROWS

Regina's Ryan Getzlaf missed the Anaheim Ducks' 3-2 home loss to the L.A. Kings Wednesday night. Ryan can be forgiven, as he witnessed the birth of his son Ryder James Getzlaf Wednesday afternoon. The birth of Ryder was reported in the L.A. Times. Congratulations Getzlafs!

JOSEPH, LIONS TALKING

Wally Buono has confirmed to CKNW Radio in Vancouver that he has had discussions with quarterback Kerry Joseph about joining the Lions as a back up to Travis Lulay.

The Lions want to ensure that they have a bonafide number two quarterback who is capable of starting should injury arise.

Joseph - the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2007 - last saw action with the Toronto Argos in 2009. He led the Saskatchewan Roughriders to their first Grey Cup victory in 17 years with a championship in 2007.

He's a seven year veteran who has averaged 3,547 yards passing per season, with a 58.5 per cent average, and an average of 15.4 interceptions to 18.5 TD's.

The Lions talked with Jarious Jackson's newly appointed agent Dan Vertileb yesterday, and both parties are in a holding pattern until Toronto makes a decisive move on the 34 year-old Notre Dame grad.

Q & A WITH ALEX SMITH

With veteran linebacker Sean Lucas signing with the Riders today, I spoke with Rider linebackers coach Alex Smith for today's edition of the Sports Cage on 620 CKRM:

SMITH: I'm glad Sean's back. He's a veteran player who understands the league and what we're doing defensively. He's been a strong part of this team for the past five years. He's a lot more confident than when he got here five years ago. The position he plays is one of the most complicated on our defense because he has to move and adjust to a lot of formations, moreso than other players. As time has gone on, it's become second nature to him.

RP: What makes him so valuable?

SMITH: He gives you both worlds that you're looking for and that's a DB with coverage skills but will play in the box in a physical manner. He came to us as a corner and his coverage skills and willingness to be physical made him a big part of our defense.

RP: What about his special teams contributions...

SMITH: Yah when I was coaching special teams he was an important of the cover teams because of his speed and his ability to tackle. He played mostly kickoff cover and punt cover for me and out of those, mostly punt cover which is an important part of special teams so he was very valuable.

RP: It sounds like he was listening to other teams' offers so was it a relief that he re-signed with Saskatchewan?

SMITH: You always want your vets back, and because of the importance of that position, it's nice. Otherwise we would've had to teach someone new that position, so I'm glad he's coming back.

RP: Who would've replaced him, or who's his back-up? Byron Bullock?

SMITH: We would've had to look at a number of people. Byron would've been in the mix or a Tad Kornegay as well. Every year you get some new people too. Tad's played in the box for us before too so he could've done that.

RP: It appears you have all your linebackers coming back for 2011 since Jerrell Freeman didn't sign in the NFL?

SMITH: At this point it looks that way. Barrin Simpson should be back, Mike McCullough's coming back and so too are Jerrell Freeman and Kye Stewart. I'm really happy that I've got a crew of guys that I've worked with that are excellent players. Our linebacking corps is pretty strong.

RP: You've been in extensive meetings with defensive coordinator Richie Hall. What kinds of things are you going over?

SMITH: Basically fronts, coverages, stunts and dogs. He's changed a bit in the two years that he's been away. You always evolve and grow as a coach and he's done that. He has a few new wrinkles and with me coaching with Gary Etheverry, there's a few things I've learned so we're trying to combine everything from the past two years and do some things Richie did up in Edmonton the past few years too.

RIDERS MAKE IT OFFICIAL

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import linebacker Sean Lucas to a new contract. The financial details were not released.

THE ROAD TO THE PLAYOFFS

Calgary, AB – The 2010-11 Western Hockey League regular season enters the stretch run, with four weeks left to play before the post-season begins, and plenty left to be decided as far as playoff berths and positioning are concerned.

So far, six teams have clinched playoff berths, with all four Eastern Conference teams guaranteed post-season play, and another two Western Conference Clubs locking up berths.

This season, the WHL's Eastern and Western Conferences will use a Conference playoff format.

The first place teams in the two Divisions in each Conference will receive the top two playoff seeds based on regular season points. The next six Clubs in each Conference, based on regular season points, will receive the 3rd - 8th playoff positions. The Clubs will be paired 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5 in a best-of-seven series.

The first place Clubs in each Division will be guaranteed the top two playoff seeds in the first round. As in previous seasons, the format for the remaining three rounds of the WHL Playoffs will remain the same. The four Clubs winning first round series in each Conference will advance to the second round, where they will be ranked in order of regular season points. The Clubs will be paired 1 vs. 4, and 2 vs. 3 in best of seven series.

The two Clubs winning the second round series in each Conference will advance to the third round (WHL Conference Championships), where they will be ranked in order of regular season points. The Clubs will be paired 1 vs. 2 in a best of seven series.

The Eastern and Western Conference Champions will advance to the best of seven WHL Championship Series, with the Club having the most regular season points receiving home ice advantage

5) Moose Jaw Warriors 33-23-2-2, 70pts, 12 games remaining
6) Edmonton Oil Kings 26-27-2-5, 59pts, 12 games remaining
7) Brandon Wheat Kings 25-28-1-7, 58pts, 11 games remaining
8) Prince Albert Raiders 25-31-2-3, 55pts, 11 games remaining

12) Calgary Hitmen 19-37-2-2, 42pts, 12 games remaining

The Saskatoon Blades, Red Deer Rebels, Medicine Hat Tigers and Kootenay Ice have all locked up playoff spots in the Eastern Conference, meaning playoff hockey is a guarantee for those Clubs.

The Blades officially clinched the East Division title on Saturday with their win over the Kootenay Ice and Moose Jaw’s loss to the Prince Albert Raiders, meaning they are guaranteed one of the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference for the first round of the playoffs. The Blades are guaranteed to finish no lower than fourth in points in the Eastern Conference. With 12 games remaining to play, the Blades will set their sights on fending off the Red Deer Rebels – their nearest competition – for the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s top regular-season team.

The Red Deer Rebels currently hold an eight-point lead over Medicine Hat and a 10-point lead over Kootenay for first place in the Central Division. However, the Tigers hold two games in hand on the Rebels, while the Ice hold three games in hand. The Rebels meet the Tigers twice more and the Ice once more this season, and play six of their final 10 games at home.

The Tigers find themselves with an 11-point cushion for a top-four spot in the Eastern Conference, but eight points behind Red Deer for the Central Division lead. The Tigers play eight of their final 12 games on home ice, where they boast a 19-8-1 record this season.

The Ice sit just two points behind Medicine Hat, but hold a game in hand on the Tigers. The Ice play seven of their final 13 games on the road, including tough trips to Red Deer, Spokane, Brandon, Saskatoon and Medicine Hat.

The Warriors currently sit comfortably in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, with an 11-point lead over sixth-placed Edmonton and a nine-point gap with Kootenay for fourth place. Warriors need a combination of gained points and dropped points by Lethbridge totaling seven in order to lock up a playoff berth.

The Oil Kings currently sit in sixth place in the East, and hold a seven-point cushion for a playoff berth in the conference. The Oil Kings face a tough schedule down the stretch with two games each versus Saskatoon and Red Deer and another contest versus Medicine Hat.

The Wheat Kings find themselves in seventh place and just one point behind Edmonton for sixth spot. The Wheat Kings also have a tough schedule down the stretch with four games remaining versus the first-placed Blades. Seven of the team’s remaining 11 games are at home, where they are currently enjoying an eight-game win streak.

The Raiders currently hold down the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but have just a three-point lead over Lethbridge, who have played one less game, and a five-point lead over Regina. The Raiders play seven of their final 11 games away from home. They also take on Swift Current, who sit just six points back, another three times this season.

The Hurricanes currently sit in ninth place in the conference, just two points up on the Pats and three up on the Broncos. The ‘Canes play seven of their final 12 games on the road, including a three-game trip through the B.C. Division in the first week of March.

The Pats sit five points out of eighth place in the East, and play eight of their last 11 games on the road, where they have managed just eight wins this season. All 11 of the team’s remaining games are versus East Division opponents.

The Broncos find themselves in 11th place in the Conference and six points adrift in the playoff race after having managed just five victories since the Christmas break. The Broncos play three more games each versus Pats and Raiders – two teams they are chasing in the playoff race.

The Calgary Hitmen find themselves in 12th place in the Eastern Conference after three straight years as the East’s top team, and currently sit 13 points back in the race for a playoff berth. With 13 points to make up and just 12 games remaining to do so, it appears the Hitmen’s string of 13 straight playoff appearances is in jeopardy.

ESKIMOS RELEASE MAAS

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have released import quarterback Jason Maas, the club announced today.

"As an organization, Jason departs with our profound gratitude and respect,” says Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman. “From his toughness to his absolute dedication, Jason has been the epitome of a pro. We were hoping that he would retire as an Eskimo, but the competitive fires are still burning strongly within, and Jason wants to continue playing this game he loves so much, if possible."

An eleven-year CFL veteran, Maas spent nine seasons in Green and Gold as both starting and backup quarterback. The Oregon State product compiled several accolades with the Eskimos including being named a CFL West All-Star in 2001 and Edmonton’s nominee for the CFL Outstanding Player Award in 2001 and 2004. On October 24, 2004, Maas joined Hall of Famer Warren Moon as the second Eskimo quarterback to pass for over 5,000 yards in a season. He finished the ’04 campaign with career best numbers: 361 completions on 549 attempts (65.8%), 5,270 yards and 31 touchdowns, 79 carries for 252 yards rushing and 8 TDs.

One of Maas’ most memorable moments happened in 2005 where he played a pivotal role in Edmonton’s remarkable playoff run to their 13th Grey Cup championship. In both the West Semi-Final and Final games, Maas came off the bench to ignite the offence and engineer game-winning drives.

Tillman goes on to say, "Days like this with special players are always bittersweet. Men who have given so much, deserve to be remembered for their best moments. Jason had many ranging from his all-star year in 2001, to the Grey Cup championship in 2005. While Jason may not be retiring in green and gold, there should be no doubt about the incredible bond he has with this club and community. For those reasons, and many more, Jason Maas will always be a member of the Eskimo family."

STADIUM DEADLINE?

In less than a week, the federal government needs to make a decision on whether or not they will help fund a new multi purpose facility in Regina. That's according to Lumsden Lake Centre Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski, who made the comment Tuesday morning.

A letter from the provincial government reached Ottawa Friday, saying that next Monday the project will be abandoned if no federal dollars are designated.

"The Federal government gets these types of requests from different levels of government," said Federal Conservative MP Andrew Sheer of Regina-Qu'Appelle. "In Quebec City they had a January 31 deadline and we take note of these things. But we work from our own perspective and we have our own set of challenges and priorities."

Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco isn't pleased Lumsden Lake Centre MP Tom Lukiwski spoke to the media about the letter.

"We haven't even received a response from Federal Finance Minister Mr. Flaherty," Fiacco said on 620 CKRM's Newsline at Noon Tuesday. "So I thought that that was totally irresponsible of Mr. Lukiwski to do."

"Hopefully we will get a response from Mr. Flaherty. We've heard from Mr. Lukiwski but we haven't heard a response about the letter from the person who it was sent to, which was Mr. Flaherty."

Fiacco said he has spoken with Provincial Minister Ken Cheveldayoff about the issue.

"I know that he's extremely disappointed in how things have turned out today with Mr. Lukiwski's comments to the media before even Mr. Flaherty has had a chance to respond," Fiacco continued. "I'm baffled he would even get into it."

I spoke with Cheveldayoff this afternoon for the Sports Cage on 620 CKRM and asked him what his optimism level is for the stadium project.

"It's gone up and it's gone down," Cheveldayoff admitted. "A couple of weeks ago when it seemed like our project would be the standard which they judge others from, I was very optimistic. Since that time I've heard absolutely nothing of significance from the Federal government so I guess I remain hopeful but I'm a realist as well. I'm just very pleased with the work that's been done by the Roughriders, the City and those in the Provincial government to try to make this move forward. But at the end of the day if you have a project and one partner isn't a willing partner, you have to reexamine the project.

"I want to thank the many of your listeners who have written to me and the 10,000 supporters on the Facebook page to support this project. I want to tell them that the dream is still alive but it may not be the same as what this feasibility study indicated but the dream is still alive from the Provincial government and the others involved in this project."

TICATS LOCK UP JOHNSON

Hamilton, Ontario - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has signed import linebacker Jamall Johnson to a new contract that will keep him in Hamilton through the 2013 season.

"We're excited to extend Jamall's contract.  He's a quick, aggressive player that has proven he is among the league's elite linebackers," said General Manager Bob O'Billovich.  "With this signing, along with last week's addition of Renauld Williams and the recent extension of Markeith Knowlton's contract, the Ticats will have an excellent linebacking corps for the foreseeable future."

Johnson, a 6-1, 222-pound native of Norco, Louisiana, has been the Ticats leading tackler over the past two seasons, recording an incredible 209 defensive tackles in 35 games.  Since signing with the Black and Gold on July 4, 2009, Johnson has also made 19 special teams tackles, seven quarterbacks sacks, five forced fumbles and five tackles for a loss.  He was named an East Division and CFL All-Star in 2009.

Before signing with the Ticats, Johnson previously spent four seasons (2005-08) with the B.C. Lions.  In 77 career games, Johnson has registered 275 defensive tackles, 75 special teams tackles and 14 quarterback sacks.  Johnson has also suited up with the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009 and Cleveland Browns in 2005.

STAMPS EXTEND JACKSON

Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that import linebacker Malik Jackson has signed a contract extension with the club. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"Malik has been a solid contributor on our defence over the past two seasons and I'm glad we were able to extend his contract," said Hufnagel. "His great athleticism and speed allows him to play numerous positions for us on defence and also be a great asset on special teams."

Jackson last season started all 18 regular-season games at outside linebacker for Calgary as well as the West final. He posted 61 tackles including a team-high six tackles for loss. Jackson recorded six sacks and added one interception, four pass knockdowns, seven special-teams tackles, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, including his first career recovery touchdown — a 41-yard fumble return during the July 1 season-opener against Toronto. He also added an interception in the division final against Saskatchewan.

HOPSON ON RIDER SCHEDULE

Roughrider President Jim Hopson (pictured) is off to Vancouver with the rest of the Rider staff today for the beginning of the annual CFL Winter Congress Meetings. I had this visit with Hopson before he left for today's Sports Cage on 620 CKRM:

RP: What are your thoughts on the 2011 Rider schedule?

HOPSON: It's like every schedule; there are things you like and things you don't. They did address a lot of our issues in terms of travel time to the East. When we go to Montreal, Toronto and Hamilton this year we have more travel time in between games than other years. They've addressed our home game concerns in terms of we have one game on Friday, five on Saturday and three on Sunday. Most of those Saturdays and Sundays are in the afternoons so I think our fans will like that.

The early part of our schedule is favourable. We open with two games at home and we have a long break after the preseason before our first game so that's a good thing. We have some challenges in the back half of the schedule though because we have to play in Calgary and Edmonton each twice in the final third of the season. Now B.C. also has to come here twice so it may even it out. It's not perfect. Where we get jammed up is the stadiums like Rogers Centre in Toronto and this year B.C. is a real challenge. I've urged the league to work on this much earlier and involve more people. The schedule has such a huge impact on competitive balance and bums in seats and we're still a gate-driven league. Kenny and Greg said the same thing - once it's done, it's done so let's go play.

RP: What's your ideal home game day and kickoff time?

HOPSON: That's interesting because I think it's changed. The feedback I got early on was that people love Sunday games and that was our tradition. But now a lot of games are on Saturdays and there's a lot of support for that. Especially early-afternoon. People like it for travel and going out afterwards. We have one Friday night game and that's not great for us but you'll end up with one or two of those. We have the home-and-home with Winnipeg too which is key for us.

RP: It's odd you're rarely on Friday Night Football on TSN. That's like the Dallas Cowboys not being on Monday Night Football.

HOPSON: That's a good point. TSN would love to have us more on Friday nights but as we've said to them, that's not a great time for us because of the amount of people who travel to games. Our viewership is so strong and fanbase so strong that we draw great numbers whenever the games are. We get great respect of TSN.

RP: What are you hoping to accomplish at CFL winter meetings?

HOPSON: This is a a great chance for our ticketing and sales people to do work around the behind-the-scenes stuff. That's so important. There's been more and more sharing. What's neat now is that the Riders are the team everyone's looking to and asking how we do things. We've even had overtures from other sports leagues asking us to share what we're doing. It's a neat place to be but we hope we learn something along the way too.

PATS 3 HITMEN 2

Rookie Chandler Stephenson's top-shelf goal with 0:37 remaining lifted the Regina Pats to a last-minute 3-2 outdoor victory over the Calgary Hitmen on Family Day Monday afternoon at Calgary's McMahon Stadium.

THE STORY: It was an entertaining game broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet and the Pats got off to a great start, leading 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Dyson Stevenson. Pats captain Garrett Mitchell upped Regina's lead 2-0 midway through the second period on a wonderful individual effort. Jaynen Rissling got the Hitmen on the board before the period was out and the Pats took a 2-1 advantage into the third. Kris Faucoult tied the game for Calgary in the final frame and it appeared as though the clubs were headed to overtime, however Stephenson's late goal snuffed that out and the Pats celebrated mightily.

THE STATS: Regina outshot Calgary 37-35 ... The Pats were 0/3 on the powerplay and 3/4 killing penalties ... Garrett Mitchell was named the #1 star while Pats goalie Damien Ketlo got #3 star after making 33 saves ... The announced attendance was 20,888 ... The victory upped the Pats' record to 21-37-0-1 and they are five points out of a playoff spot with 11 games to go ... The Hitmen drop to 19-37-2-2 with the defeat.

UP NEXT: The Pats visit the Swift Current Broncos Friday night at 7:30 pm on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 7:05 pm).

COUNTDOWN TO FACEOFF

Here are some photos from McMahon Stadium courtesy of Pats President Brent Parker. The Pats and Hitmen square off outdoors at 2:00 pm Sask time today on Rogers Sportsnet and 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 1:35 pm).

THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE

Perhaps it hasn't been the greatest season for the Regina Pats. The oldest franchise in major junior hockey enters the week seven points out of a playoff spot in the WHL East Conference with a dozen games remaining in the regular season. The hill is mighty, mighty steep for them to make the playoffs and if they miss the post-season, it will mark three consecutive seasons of an early spring.

However today, if for only one day, the Pats are on centre-stage. They, and the Calgary Hitmen.

The Pats and the Calgary Hitmen square off today in the WHL's first-ever Outdoor Game in Canada at 2:00 pm Sask time on 620 CKRM and Rogers Sportsnet. The last time the Pats played a meaningful outdoor game was in 1974 when they played a team of all-stars in Sweden.

Blog reader Todd Clendening of Calgary sent in this photo of the configuration of McMahon Stadium for last night's NHL Heritage Classic and today's WHL Outdoor Game. For sure, it's quite a novelty and it's a big deal for the Regina Pats to have been invited to participate. Here are some worthwhile notes from the WHL going into today's game:

Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League in partnership with Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast the first ever Canadian Hockey League Outdoor Game in Canada when the Calgary Hitmen host the Regina Pats at McMahon Stadium on Monday, February 21 at 3 p.m. (ET)/1 p.m. (MT) on the Sportsnet East, Ontario, West and Pacific channels. The game will also be in high definition.

The game coincides with Family Day Monday, a statutory holiday in many Canadian provinces.

Hockeycentral analysts Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean join host Daren Millard at McMahon Stadium for the broadcast. Roger Millions will be on skates conducting on-ice interviews with players and coaches.

Peter Loubardias will have the play-by-play call while Sam Cosentino handles the analysis.

"As the popularity of outdoor games continue to skyrocket, Rogers Sportsnet is proud to partner with the WHL to present this game to Canadians," said Rob Corte, Executive Producer, Events, Rogers Sportsnet. "We’re excited about the opportunity to give fans a different perspective with the wireless camera. It will give the viewer a unique experience from inside the glass, capturing the emotion on the ice up close."

“We are delighted that Rogers Sportsnet will be broadcasting nationally the first ever outdoor game to be played in Canada in CHL history,” said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “Thanks to the cooperation from the National Hockey League and the Calgary Flames, the WHL is in a position to stage this historic game as part of the NHL Heritage Classic weekend festivities in Calgary.”

OUTDOOR GAME REGULATIONS

1. Once the game has begun, at the discretion of the WHL, it may be subject to one or more temporary stoppages due to unplayable conditions.

2. The period and game format may be reconfigured to accommodate temporary stoppages as determined appropriate by the WHL.

3. If wind is a factor at ice level, the WHL will notify the Clubs prior to the third period that the period will be played in two equal halves. The score clock will be set to 10:00 and play will continue until the buzzer reaches 0:00. The Clubs will then change ends and another 10:00 period will be played. This identical procedure will also take place at the 2:30 minute mark of the overtime period, if it is required.

4. In the event of a shoot-out, each Club will determine the end they prefer to defend, which could be the same end.

5. If the game is started, and then stopped permanently due to unplayable conditions, it will be deemed "official" once two periods have been played. The Club leading at the time play is stopped will be declared the winner and will be awarded two points in the standings.

6. If the game is tied at the time play is stopped permanently, and after two periods have been played, each Club will be awarded one point in the standings. A shoot-out will be immediately held, with the winning Club earning the additional point.

7. If the game is started, and then stopped permanently due to unplayable conditions, and fewer than two complete periods of regular time have been played, the game will be officially "postponed" with the make-up date to be Thursday, March 3 in Calgary.

8. Should any unforeseen circumstances arise; the WHL will discuss the matter with the General Managers of the respective Clubs. The WHL will be empowered to make a binding decision, if necessary.

ATTENDANCE RECORD
Today's contest will mark the first WHL and Canadian Hockey League game ever to be played outdoors in Canada.

“We are extremely excited about the great opportunity this game presents for both our fans and players to be part of such a unique and unforgettable experience,” said Hitmen General Manager Kelly Kisio.

Though today’s contest will be the first outdoor WHL and CHL game on Canadian soil, it’s the second outdoor game in the WHL this season. The Spokane Chiefs hosted the Kootenay Ice in front of 7,075 fans at Avista Stadium in Spokane, WA, on January 15th for the wildly successful Rockstar Outdoor Hockey Classic.

With over 18,000 tickets already sold for the game, it could very likely be the most attended junior hockey game in history, breaking the Canadian Hockey League record of 20,081 (Ottawa 67’s vs Kingston Frontenacs @ Corel Center; Dec. 20, 2004) and the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship record of 20,380 (Canada vs Sweden, Gold Medal Game @ Corel Center in Ottawa, Jan. 5, 2009).

“It’s an honor to be able to play in the first outdoor WHL game in Canada,” said Regina Pats’ forward Jordan Weal. “I hear there will be a lot of fans coming out to watch, and I know all the guys on the team are really excited to get out there and play.”

As residents of the Prairie Provinces know, Mother Nature can be particularly harsh and unpredictable at this time of the year. Players from both sides are well aware they could face anything from cold, wintery weather to bright sunshine and mild temperatures.

Pats captain Garrett Mitchell, who spent plenty of hours on the outdoor rinks in his hometown of Regina, said playing outdoors means being prepared to face the elements. Fortunately, Mitchell and the Pats were able to tap a great resource for hints and tips on dealing with what Mother Nature can throw at them.

“We talked to the Saskatchewan Roughriders,” said Mitchell. “We got some balaclavas and stuff like that, so we should be alright.

“I’m not too worried about the weather because I’ve been out there on the rinks in my neighborhood when it’s been minus 20 degrees…the cold doesn’t matter too much when you’re out there working hard and skating around,” he said.

Toronto, February 19, 2011 — CBC has announced that hockey’s best-known personality has renewed his contract with Hockey Night in Canada through the 2011-2012 National Hockey League season.

“We’re delighted to announce that the venerable hockey icon Don Cherry has signed on for another season and will continue to provide hockey’s liveliest and sometimes provocative commentary,” says Kirstine Stewart, executive vice-president of CBC English Services. “Don has been a part of the CBC Hockey Night in Canada family since 1980, generating passion and debate among hockey fans everywhere. Hockey Night in Canada, with Don at the desk for its 59th season, will continue to bring the very best of hockey programming on all of its platforms to Canadians everywhere.”

Don will continue to team up with host and longtime partner Ron MacLean for the most-watched segment on Canadian sports television, Coach’s Corner, each Saturday and throughout the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“We join millions of fans in congratulating Don on his new contract and wishing him continued success as the declarative voice of CBC's definitive hockey broadcast,” says NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “Don's knowledge of the sport is exceeded only by his love for it and we are proud of his enduring connection with the game and the National Hockey League. He truly is one of a kind, and it is an honour to consider him a friend.”

The terms of Mr. Cherry’s contract were not disclosed.

**In this blogger's opinion, it's time for Cherry to hang it up.

An interesting note from Timmy Donovan, the media relations director for the Kamloops Blazers:

Kamloops, BC - The Kamloops Blazers and the Kamloops Indian Band will be hosting First Nations Night on Wednesday, March 2nd when the Kelowna Rockets pay their last visit to the Interior Savings Centre.

To mark the second annual First Nations night, the Stanley Cup is being brought in as part of the celebration. The Stanley Cup will be in the Sports Action Lounge when the doors open at 6pm until the beginning of the third period. Fans will have the opportunity to see the Cup and have their picture taken with it for $5, with all proceeds donated to the Mitch Harlock Family.

Following the game, there will be an exclusive Stanley Cup party at Earls Restaurant as a special fundraiser for 10-year-old Mitch Harlock of Kamloops. The Grade 5 David Thompson Elementary school student was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Neuroblastoma shortly before Christmas.

Tim O'Donovan is the son of Blazers P.A. announcer and Kamloops TV personality Bill O'Donovan, formerly of CTV Regina. Tim was born in Regina and remains a dyed-in-the-wool Roughrider fan and sent me the above photo:

Rod,

Had to email this pic to you. She was at the Canada Games Centre in Whitehorse, Yukon during Hockey Day in Canada on February 12th. She was also at our game at Takhini Arena later that day. I didn't catch her name, but she said her husband is from Wolseley, SK and I do remember playing a few hockey tournaments there. Continue the great work with your blog!

And another Rider Pride vacation photo from blog reader Kevin Hengen:

Hi Rod

Thought I would pass on this photo of my daughter and I trying to get Mickey and Minnie to join Rider Nation during our trip to Disneyworld last year!

Always loud in Section 9! Go Riders!

The Vancouver Province reports the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers have made offers to free agent quarterback Jarious Jackson, who's spent his entire career with the B.C. Lions. Apparently the Lions have made him an offer too (in the neighbourhood of $125,000 per season) but it's with the understanding he'll be the back up to Travis Lulay. The Argos and Bombers are offering Jackson the chance to compete for the starter's job.

Have you always wanted to be a Roughrider cheerleader? 2011 tryouts are slated for Sunday, March 6 from 12-4 pm at QCK Gymnastics Club. Print off the registration form from http://www.riderville.com/ and bring it with you for this year's tryouts. There is a $20 tryout fee and you must be 18 years old by Sept. 1, 2011.

There is plenty of speculation about what the Roughriders will do for a kicker in 2011 with veteran Luca Congi recovering from a severe knee injury. There's been talk of a trade to acquire Paul McCallum, or signing Damon Duval away from Montreal. However a team rep told me on Friday the plan right now is to go into the season with Eddie Johnson handling all duties until Congi is healthy.

---

There has been plenty of squabbling over the Roughriders' 2011 schedule. Really it shouldn't matter to anyone but the Riders and if they feel they don't have adequate prep time between games, then that is a worthwhile concern.

However as far as fans go, you can't please everybody. It seems the bulk of the games are on Saturday afternoons and while that makes travelers, bars and restaurants happy, it's a killer for retailers. You can shoot a cannon down the streets of this province during Rider games and it means in-store traffic is dead.

Soooooo, you can't please everyone. And once the season kicks off, I'll guarantee you'll be so excited about the games you will forget about the inconvenience of the schedule.
