ESKS PART WAYS WITH G.M.
LeLacheur says, "In his eight years with our team, Danny has helped the Edmonton Eskimos win two Grey Cups. Our entire organization thanks Danny for his contributions and wish he and his family the best in the future".
Maciocia was named General Manager and Director of Football Operations on November 27, 2008. He was Head Coach of the Eskimos from 2005 to 2008 and served as the Esks' Offensive Coordinator from 2002 – 2004.
No replacement has been named for position.
GAME PREVIEW
Courtesy Hamilton Spectator:Ticats at Roughriders, 4:30pm MT today, TSN, CKRM
3 THINGS TO WATCH
1. Cornering the market
The Roughriders play with a non-import at the wide side corner -- a position often reserved for an American -- and their starter, Donovan Alexander, has been battling a hamstring injury. A Canadian corner would likely be a target anyway, but an injured one (or his back up) will more than likely be tested early and often.
2. Goal line hijinks
The Ticats' struggles from deep within the red zone are well-documented, so look for new and nifty personnel groups and schemes if Hamilton finds itself knocking on the doorstep. The Cats have consistently left points on the board against good teams -- Calgary and Montreal, in particular -- and won't be successful in Regina unless they can finish drives with seven points.
3. Bring the noise
The Regina crowd is notoriously bonkers and will be at full throttle for a game that starts mid-afternoon on a Saturday. The Ticat offensive line has struggled in hostile environs and will now have an entirely new right side -- tackle Belton Johnson and guard Simeon Rottier have yet to play together in a game this season. Quieting that crowd earlier -- say by scoring a TD or two -- would go a long way to making life easier for the boys up front.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"I made a joke, 'Let's just score from 20 or 30 yards out and then we don't have to worry about the one yard.' " - Ticat quarterback Kevin Glenn on the team's trouble scoring from in close
"Certainly, I'm concerned with the number of points that we've given up. That's part of the consistency. I'm concerned with the fact that we gave up so many big running plays in that football game, so we have to do a great job of stopping the run and we have to do a good job of getting pressure on the quarterback, because right now we're putting a lot of pressure on our secondary in the passing game." - Saskatchewan coach Ken Miller
"We're 1-3, but we're a good 1-3. We'll be all right." - Hamilton linebacker Otis Floyd on the state of his team
BY THE NUMBERS
-3
Turnover ratio for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, second-worst in the CFL, trailing only Edmonton's mark of minus 9.
66
Yards needed by Ticat receiver Arland Bruce to pass Tom Forzani for 30th on the CFL's list for all-time receiving yards.
+6.1
Percentage increase in scoring per game this season, compared to 2009. Last season, an average of 51. 3 points were scored by both teams, but that number has risen to 54.4 points through the first four weeks of 2010.
Ticat linebacker Jamall Johnson vs. Roughrider QB Darian Durant
Durant is almost as big a threat with his legs as he his with his arm: He is ninth in the league in rushing and has more yards on the ground -- 162 -- than Ticat running back DeAndra' Cobb. Johnson leads the CFL in tackles with 28 and will look to use his sideline-to-sideline speed to contain Durant as well as Roughrider running back Wes Cates.
THE STATS
Think today's game might be high-scoring? Saskatchewan has not only scored the second-most points in the league -- not surprising with Darian Durant running things -- but has surrendered more points than any other team in the league.
After four games, the 'Riders' offence has collected almost 700 more yards than Hamilton's. Saskatchewan has 1,960 yards in net offence. Hamilton has 1,264.
CFL
---
Two games in the CFL today. First, Saskatchewan tries to take over sole possession of first in the West Division when they host Hamilton. The Roughriders are tied at 3-1 with Calgary. The Stampeders play Winnipeg in the late game.

RED SOX UP 1-0
The Regina Red Sox won game one of their first round WMBL playoff series against Weyburn Friday night 8-5 at Currie Field. Shawn Wilyman picked up the win with some help from the bullpen. Regina jumped out to an early 7-0 lead only to see Weyburn chip away and make the game very interesting. Regina had a balanced attack offensively through out the lineup. DH Andrew Kapple hit his first home run of the season to expand Regina's lead to 8-5.Tickets are available at the gate only for Sunday nights game at 7:00 P.M. Gates open at 6:00 P.M. In anticipation of large crowds the Red Sox ask that as many fans possible park next to the Thunder Practice field and enter Currie Field through the left field area. It is not a long walk!
THE RETURN(S) OF MARCUS THIGPEN
The big story emerging in tomorrow's Roughriders-Tigercats game at Mosaic Stadium is the first return of Marcus Thigpen to Mosaic Stadium since the Riders cut him coming out of training camp. Three days later he was with the Ticats where he scored three kick return touchdowns in the opening two games."Yah it is special," Thigpen told reporters at the Hotel Saskatchewan on Friday. "I don't know what kind of reception I'm going to get, whether I'll be booed, cheered or what. But I definitely want to show the Riders what they're missing. It is a little bit personal but I'm trying not to look at it that way."
It's going to be interesting to watch Thigpen go head-to-head with Riders returner Dominique Dorsey tomorrow. They won't literally be on the field at the same time but fans will be watching the match-up very closely.
"I never really thought about it that way but now that you say it, I can see it," Dorsey smiled today. "But for me every game is a challenge. It really isn't about me against him."
Rider General Manager Brendan Taman can see how salacious the battle will be. He's the one who landed Dorsey as the biggest prize on the free agent market this winter and knows fans are excited to see the showdown.
"Me too," Taman laughed. "Marcus is a great kid and we had him here last year. He's a fine individual but he couldn't crack the guys we had ahead of him. In hindsight, you know, who wouldn't have kept him Marcus? Our job is to try and contain him and get Dominique Dorsey going. More than anything I'm glad he found a job and he's been pretty impressive.
"I don't blame him for having a chip on his shoulder and I hope our guys have a chip on their shoulder trying to stop him. We put Kye Stewart on the roster and that's not a facade. It's to upgrade our special teams and I think we'll be fine."
We'll look at this closer today in the Sports Cage on Football Friday from 4-6pm on 620 CKRM.
FRIDAY RODSERVATIONS (AND CONFESSIONS)
- I'll start out with a confession. There's a large part of me that feels dirty as a sportstalk radio host. I mean, I can't believe we spent two hours on The Sports Cage on 620 CKRM last week discussing whether or not Mo Lloyd should have visited the Rider locker room after the Eskimos' Week 3 loss in Regina. I mean really? But it got lots of calls and texts and likely listeners as well.
And I felt like I needed to take a shower after Thursday's show when we spent a good chunk of time on QR77 Calgary's broadcast of the Riders-Stampeders game Saturday night. Texters told us Wednesday that shots were fired at the Rider coaching staff regarding their age. I wasn't prepared to throw the Stamps' crew of Mark Stephen and Greg Peterson under the bus until I heard it for myself.
CKRM's Roger Currie pulled the clip for Thursday's show and what it contained was a lighthearted comment about Ken Miller from colour commentator Peterson saying at 68, his eyes might not be too good to have seen the play he challenged in the second quarter. It garnered a fair bit of reaction; some saying it was offside, others saying it wasn't a big deal and that we should move on.
Roundabout 5:30, I got a call on my cell from the "403" area code and thought to myself "Ooo boy, here we go". As I feared, it was Greg Peterson himself wanting to know what we were discussing because he had been alerted to our broadcast.
I called him back after the show fully expecting to be blasted, but I got a lesson in how classy the former Stampeders' safety really is.
"It was an attempt at humour and I certainly didn't mean anything bad by it," Greg admitted to me. "If anyone is offended within the Riders, I would gladly offer an apology. I talked all game about how much respect I have for the Coach Miller but maybe people want to focus on the other comment. I didn't mean ANY harm by it."
He's a good man. And as far as I know, no one within the Riders took offence to the joke.
Being controversial at times is what people seem to want with this show, but I wince when I know feathers have been ruffled.
---
Well a few listeners took offence to my show topic Thursday, and I got this rather humourous email right after the show:
• KEN MILLER IS OLD AND HE DOES NEED GLASSES. I'M 63 AND I ALSO WEAR GLASSES, IF ANYONE CARES. BUT WE'RE 3 AND 1!
• WE LOST THE GAME LAST SATURDAY AND IT'S NOT LIKE ANY OTHER PROFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAM HASN'T LOST AT LEAST ONE GAME IN A SEASON. AND, WE'RE 3 AND 1
• YOUR SHOW IS GREAT, BUT PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE TALK ABOUT SPORTS AND NOT SOME GUY PULLING HIS GOALIE IN THE PARK.
• DID I MENTION THAT WE ARE 3 AND 1?
GO RIDERS!
EDENWOLD RIDER (DAN HUBBARD)
The "goalie" reference by Dan was in regards to the story that the guy who was seen committing an indecent act in Wascana Park on Monday was nabbed by Regina City Police. I made a few mentions of it in The Cage. The offender is a 58-year old Calgarian.
---
And on a related note, I would submit the Stampeders-Roughriders rivalry has gotten WAAAAYYY out of hand! If anyone has seen the footage on YouTube of the garbage that went on in the stands at McMahon Stadium Saturday night involving Calgary City Police, you'll know what I'm talking about.
The horror on the faces of the fans seated around the ruckus tells me all I need to know. Calgary police should be commended for their actions however NO ONE should have to put up with those shenanigans while trying to enjoy a football game. It was stomach-turning.
The next time these two teams meet in Calgary, I think players from both teams should do public service announcements ahead of time begging fans to behave. It's out of control.
---
However the rivalry is very much alive amongst the players. Check out this remark on Twitter Thursday night from Stamps QB Henry Burris:
From: @HenryBurris
Wanna thank the stamp fans for showing the country that rider fans don't rule in our city! Let's rock vs a great bombers team saturday! #1
---
Speaking of Twitter, a lot has been made of Argos OT Rob Murphy and his fine from the league for his racially insensitive tweet on Wednesday. He made a crack that foreigners in the Toronto train station don't smell quite as bad early in the morning.
Two observations on this; Murphy IS a foreigner, and if he's anything like the other offensive linemen I know, he likely smells too!
---
As expected, Andy Fantuz's Roughrider teammates are having a field day with Thursday's launch of the breakfast cereal "Fantuz Flakes" by the Federated Co-op.
"I liked them the first time when they were called Maple Crisps!" laughed Rider linebacker Mike McCullough as he shovelled a handful of the cereal in his mouth after Thursday's practice. He was still wearing his gloves at the time.
Darian Durant says he's happy for Andy, and that he'd like to have a burger named after him if at all possible. The Press Box Sports Bar jumped on that, as evidenced by the post below.
Weston Dressler feels Fantuz Flakes are not an equal opportunity cereal, since many fans are allergic to the almonds contained in the crunchy treat.
Marcus Adams is downright jealous, and wants his own endorsement deal. I always think of Chunky when we're in Minot and drive by Chunky's Steak Buffet. I'm dying to go in there, but can't convince the family to go.
---
A text from Pats penalty box attendant Ken Stromberg on Thursday:
FYI, the total wait time for an Andy Fantuz autie was 2 hours & 20 minutes.
Personally I'd rather have my face on a beer can like Bob Poley does.
---
Speaking of beer, I found myself AGAIN at the beerstand beside Rider offensive tackle Dan Goodspeed the other night at the Bon Jovi concert. And AGAIN he declined my offer to buy him a beer, as he opted for two bottles of water instead.
That's two strikes. Three and he's out.
Actually it's admirable. That's why he's the best offensive tackle in the CFL and I'm, well, whatever I am.
---
Rider receivers coach Bob Dyce was on CKRM's Coaches Show on Wednesday and I asked him if we can have a 40-yard dash to determine who's faster between receivers Weston Dressler and Rob Bagg.
"AFTER THE SEASON!" Dyce laughed.
---
Having former Riders on In The Huddle has proven to be a splendid decision. 17-year CFL offensive tackle Vic Stevenson was tremendously well-received this week and he didn't hold back in his candid assessment of the battle in the trenches Saturday night in Calgary.
"It looked like a pro line (Calgary offense) against a university or junior line (Rider defense)," Stevenson observed.
Hopefully that changes in the Hamilton game, and I expect it will.
---
Get out to Currie Field tonight and cheer on your Regina Red Sox when they host the Weyburn Beavers in Game 1 of their WMBL best-of-5 first round series. First pitch is 7:05. Congratulations also to Mitch McDonald of the Red Sox for achieving the Triple Crown this season.
---
I got a WILD rumour sent at me during an appearance on Team 1260 Edmonton's Pipeline Show Tuesday night with Dean Millard and Guy Flaming. They asked me what I knew about Pats coach Curtis Hunt being in the running for the Moose Jaw Warriors' vacant G.M. position.
It caught me totally off-guard. I asked Huntsy about it Thursday but never heard back on the matter.
---
With legendary baseball announcer Jon Miller going into the Baseball Hall of Fame this week, it furthered my movement to have former Rider play-by-play voice Geoff Currier inducted into the Riders' Plaza of Honour. I was beating that drum a few years back but got no reaction. Some have been critical saying I'm only doing that to open the door for that to happen to me some day, which is ludicrous. I don't think that way and it's too bad lots of people do.
---
The story which caught my eye the most from American sports coverage this week was in Dallas at training camp of my beloved Cowboys. First round pick Dez Bryant made waves when he refused to carry the pads of veteran Roy Williams.
The kid is in for lots of abuse now.
For my friends and blog readers the Scheibels (formerly of Wilcox and now of Calgary) here's a Hardy Sauter update: the Maryfield, Sask product has been named coach of the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads.
---
An observation for BlackBerry Messenger users: please use your full name instead of your initials or nickname to identify yourself! Both Darren Mitchell and Mitchell Blair are in my contacts as "Mitch" and it's quite confusing since both are rather scruffy.
It's just a small pet peeve.
---
And finally a shoutout to Bregg's Cleaners & Tailors for some outstanding work this week. Sportsnet shipped me three XXL golf shirts to wear on camera but they are TENTS on me. I was too afraid to ask for XL's so the girls at Bregg's tailored them down to size (plus two In The Huddle shirts) IN ONE DAY!
And Terry from Bregg's is a faithful Sports Cage listener. It was Terry who said he wanted to hear the Greg Peterson comments on the show Thursday, and started the gongshow.
---
Today is Four Seasons Football Friday in the Sports Cage from 4-6pm on 620 CKRM. Scott Schultz will join us for the full two hours and Mr. Furious Daved Benefield will join us from Vancouver at 4:15pm.
---
Today's Press Box Sports Bar Friday lunch buffet:
Roast beef, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, perogie with kubasa and pizza!
And don't forget the Press Box still has tickets for Saturday's Rider-Ticat clash at Mosaic Stadium. Get aboard the party bus! $55 gets you in. Ask your server for details.

Hey Rod, this is a picture of my buddy's centerpiece in his backyard. He said it took him 30 hours to do. Well worth it I say.Dillon Forsberg, E.I.T.
Here are a couple of pictures of my daughter, Delaney, on our way home from her soccer tournament in Swift Current. She had just earned the stuffed Gainer by fundraising at her school for MS, she had to raise over $600 to get Gainer.
So we had to stop at Parkpeg, the home of Gainer and “Dog River” to have pictures taken.
Thanks

MURPHY FINED
Murphy made a remark about foreigners, and later posted a tweet apologizing for the remark, saying it was made in jest. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon didn't agree.
"The commissioner found the comments inappropriate and offensive and are not to be tolerated," the league said in a statement. "The player has been fined by the league under our social media policy."
One of Murphy's tweets said: "At train station ... Pumped to be smelling foreigners this early in the AM. They smell less offensive this way ... little known fact."
The Argos travelled by train to Montreal on Wednesday to get ready for a game on Thursday night against the Alouettes.

WEDNESDAY SPORTS CAGE ARCHIVES
HOUR 1: CFL Hall of Famers Ron Estay and Don Narcisse:http://www.mediafire.com/?rbm6kbdymbsrf22
HOUR 2: Rider Coaches Show with receivers coach Bob Dyce:
JIM DALEY ON SPECIAL TEAMS
CTV Regina's Lee Jones investigated the Roughriders' troubles on special teams today with position coach Jim Daley. Here's how their chat went:Q. How close are you to breaking a big kick return?
DALEY: The number one thing is I hope we're close to winning. That's the number one thing. If we can contribute with a big return throughout the game and several of them, that's great. We are close from my observation of being pretty effective. Dominique (Dorsey) had his best game last week in terms of HIS play. Where we need to improve tremendously is blocking and I think our guys saw that on video. We were close on two occasions on hitting a long one. For us to be successful as a team we have to be successful on punting and kicking but also the return game.
Q. Is it unfair to point the finger at Dorsey?
DALEY: I'm not going to comment on whether it's fair or not ... that's up to peoples' own judgment. I know from the coaching point of view, it's not much different that coaching quarterbacks. You need a better job from the supporting cast in order to be better. From what I see as far as pop in his legs and spring in his step, Dominique's ready to make huge contributions.
Q. Is this whole week a training camp tryout for punters Eddie Johnson and Louie Sakoda?
DALEY: I think that's true, especially for a specialist. All year that can be the case. This week in particular, coach Miller's paid a lot more attention to the punters and kickers and he'll make a decision and let us know when he's ready. But you're right, it's been more competitive for these men this week and that's a good thing.
TSN REPORTS PRINTERS DONE
It looks like the B.C. Lions will be without Casey Printers for the rest of the year, as the Vancouver Province reports that the quarterback could be done for the season after MRI scans of his injured right knee showed a torn meniscus and a partially torn ACL.
According to reports, the extent of the injury wasn't known conclusively until Wednesday. Printers was hurt in the Lions' loss to Montreal on July 16.
Travis Lulay, who got the start in B.C.'s 24-20 loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, is expected start for the second straight week against Edmonton.
More to follow.

CORTEZ A ROOKIE AGAIN
Cortez, a veteran assistant coach in the Canadian Football League, including 11 with the Calgary Stampeders and one with Saskatchewan (2006), is the new quarterbacks coach of the Buffalo Bills. He had a brief feel for the NFL life during the Bills' off-season workouts and mini-camps.
But the start of NFL training camps will be Cortez's chance to experience his new role with, as they say in the business, live bullets.
"It's a different challenge, an opportunity," he said recently while taking a break from his duties with the Bills to watch his former team play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
A mutual friend on the Bills' staff recommended Cortez to new head coach Chan Gailey. Cortez knew Gailey, but admittedly not very well. That said, Gailey thought enough of Cortez to give him the plumb job.
Cortez has either tutored or worked with the likes of quarterbacks Doug Flutie, Jeff Garcia, Dave Dickenson and Henry Burris, all of whom became stars in the CFL and later graduated to the NFL. In the case of Flutie and Garcia, they became starters down south.
One noticeable change Cortez has experienced in the NFL is the expanded staff, which has taken some of the tasks of his workload, such as breaking down film in the off-season.
"I haven't done any of it," he said. "There's just a huge amount of resources."
While there are differences from the NFL to the CFL, notably the smaller field and one less player, Cortez said there are similarities.
"I recognized some of the playbook," he said. "There's only x numbers of plays. Everybody in the league runs a similar offence…Football is football. A curl route is a curl route. The extra down is a big deal."
Cortez said unlike many people in the CFL game, he didn't have any NFL aspirations.
"We've been successful in Calgary," he said. "I've been there a long time. It's a great place to coach. I hadn't thought much about the NFL."
Soon he'll be spending countless hours every day living the life of a quarterbacks coach in the NFL.

RIDERS PRACTICE AT U OF R **With Miller Quotes
Rider coach Ken Miller's Tuesday comments:
Q. What needs to be better for the Hamilton game?
MILLER: Just about every area. The offensive line, they need to be better. We need to be better on the D-line and play more consistently and field position. We have to do something about field position, it has to be much better. That's the responsibility of all three units ... but certainly our special teams have to improve as well.
I've been saying since camp that we need to be better in all areas and we'll work on that regardless of what our record is. We need to get better in every area.
Q. Prechae Rodriguez faces his old team this week ... can you use that as motiviation?
MILLER: I think so and we're trying to give him a bigger piece of the pie anyways. He has a lot of physical ability, he has ability to catch balls and you've seen that when he catches balls, he translates that in to positive yards. He has a lot to give and we expect more of him.
Q. Concerned with the O-line's play?
MILLER: It does concern me a little bit that Darian got hit but I feel really good about the fact our O-line is a veteran group and has proven they have tremendous ability. We were just out of sync in that game and I expect us to recover fully. It's just a matter of each man taking responsibility and making sure he's sound in what he's doing. And we have to be better at picking up schemes, but it was one-on-one match-ups that gave us problems.
Q. What about the defense?
MILLER: Certainly I'm concerned with then number of points we've given up. That's part of the consistency. I'm concerned with the fact we gave up so many big running plays in that game. We have to do a great job of stopping the run, pressuring the quarterback, because right now we're putting a lot of pressure on the secondary in the passing game.
KNOBLAUCH NEW KOOTENAY COACH
"After going through the numerous applicants for the Head Coaching position the decision to promote Kris was ultimately an easy one as he has been with the Hockey Club for three years and has worked in the Western Hockey League for the past four years. The philosophy of our organization is to hire and promote from within wherever possible. Kris is very familiar with our returning group of players which will make the transition from Assistant to Head Coach that much easier," continued Chynoweth.
"When I came here three years ago it was one of my goals to someday be a Head Coach in the WHL. To be named as bench boss for an organization that gave me an opportunity and has moved on as many coaches as they have to professional hockey is definitely a huge honor. I look forward to the many challenges that lie ahead, but know the foundation is definitely in place to continue on with the winning tradition," commented Kris Knoblauch.

CANADIENS MOVES
MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier continued his staff makeover Tuesday with the hiring of three new scouts, the promotion of another, a new strength and conditioning coach and a hockey information co-ordinator.Most prominent among the moves was the hiring of Ryan Jankowski as an amateur scout. Jankowski had been let go as assistant general manager and director of amateur scouting for the New York Islanders, positions he held since 2006.
Former Canadien Serge Boisvert was named amateur scout, primarily for Quebec. A Stanley Cup winner with Montreal in 1986, he worked for the team last season as a consultant in player development.
Christer Rockstrom, who worked 21 years in the New York Rangers organization, the last five as director of player personnel for Europe, was hired to scout European leagues.
Vaughn Karpan, an amateur scout since 2005, was named professional scout replacing Gordie Roberts.
Roberts was let go after the season along with amateur scouts Michel Boucher, Denis Morel, Antonin Routa, Nikolai Vakourov and Dave Mayville. The Canadiens retained their other pro scout Doug Gibson.

CALGARY HIJINX
We've had multiple reports of Stampeders fans throwing beer cans at Rider fans at McMahon Stadium Saturday night. I suppose it's not being publicized by the Calgary media because the cans weren't actually thrown ON the field, like they were here in a Regina a few years back. Regardless the Calgary Police had the sitch well in hand as you can see by the above photo, so we won't criticize.
These guys, apparently, were the ones who had the beer cans tossed at them.
Photos courtesy my buddy Domenico Fiacco (right), pictured here with his cousin Mel, daughter of His Worship Mayor Pat Fiacco.NATIONAL POST CFL RANKINGS
1. Calgary Stampeders (3-1)
Last week: 3
After a shaky first half, Stamps quarterback Henry Burris bounced back and played a tremendous final 30 minutes against the previously undefeated Riders. In 2009, Calgary had four chances to beat Saskatchewan, but fell short each time, including in the West Division final. That monkey is off the team's back early this year.
This week: vs. Toronto Argonauts, Thursday 7:30 p.m. ET
2. Montreal Alouettes (3-1)
Last Week: 2
This Week: Home to Toronto on Thursday
Hard to believe that the Als went seven quarters without scoring a touchdown, but that's what happened as Montreal was held out of the end zone by B.C. in Week 3 and by the Ticats for most of Week 4. Seven Damon Duval field goals helped the Alouettes beat Hamilton last week, and the Montreal finally broke into the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to inflate the final score. The most important development may have taken place off the field as it appears general manager Jim Popp is [external link] close to signing a long-term deal with the club.
3. Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-1)
Last week: 1
This week: vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 6:30 p.m. ET
With the parity in the CFL this year, it was only a matter of time before Saskatchewan dropped a game. And there's no shame losing on the road in Calgary. However, the way they lost has to be discouraging for coach Ken Miller and Rider Nation. The Riders were in the game heading to the second half before falling apart. It will be a restless week in Regina. (As a complete aside: One of the top moments from Week 4 had to be after Wes Castes scored a touchdown in the first half in Calgary and then attempted to high five an official on the goal line who still had his hands raised signaling touchdown. When it was clear the official was either uninterested or didn't notice what Cates was doing the Roughriders tailback patted him on the backside and ran off the field.)
4. Toronto Argonauts (3-1)
Last week: 4
This week: at Montreal Alouettes, Thursday 7:30 p.m. ET
Three straight weeks the Argos have entered the fourth quarter trailing and three straight times they've cobbled together unlikely victories. When something like that happens a lot of the credit has to go to the coaching staff and specifically the head coach: Jim Barker. Quarterback Cleo Lemon is struggling, but tailback Cory Boyd is a revelation and the defence makes big plays when it has to.
5. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-2)
Last week: 6
This week: at Calgary Stampeders, Saturday 9:30 p.m. ET
With Buck Pierce sidelined by a knee injury, backup quarterback Steven Jyles came in and played well completing 14 of 22 passes for 267 yards leading Winnipeg to a much-needed victory. Jyles passed for one touchdown and ran for two more in just his second career CFL start. Meanwhile, the defence was all over the Eskimos on Saturday picking up four sacks, two interceptions and one forced fumble.
6. B.C. Lions (1-3)
Last week: 7
This week: at Edmonton Eskimos, Friday 9 p.m. ET
Travis Lulay made his first career CFL start on Friday against the Argos and looked good most of the night. However, one key mistake — an interception by Byron Parker that was returned for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter — sunk the Montana State product. But, there is a lot of blame to go around for the Lions, who squandered a 17-3 lead in losing their third straight game. Tailback Jamal Robertson fumbled the ball away inside Toronto's five-yard line, while receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux dropped a sure-touchdown pass.
7. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-3)
Last week: 6
This week: at Saskatchewan Roughriders, Saturday 6:30 p.m. ET
This was supposed to be the season that the Ticats challenged Montreal for East Division supremacy, but now a playoff berth looks like it may be a tall order. Quarterback Kevin Glenn struggled, tailback DeAndra' Cobb still seems to be stuck in an early-season slump and kicker Sandro DeAngelis continues to be a question mark. If only they were as efficient battling opponents on the field as they are [external link] making fun of them off it.
8. Edmonton Eskimos (0-4)
Last week: 8
This week: vs. B.C. Lions, Friday 9 p.m. ET
If we could rank the Eskimos below the conditional franchise granted to Ottawa then we would, but apparently that's not allowed in these rankings. At least in their previous two losses Edmonton looked like they were on the verge of breaking through. On Saturday night in Winnipeg they were down 23-0 before you could say, "Richie Hall job security."

HOUR 2: More Rider talk, Rider DB Lance Frazier joins us live -

NO COACHING CHANGES IN EDMONTON
Edmonton Eskimos President Rick LeLacheur met with the media in Edmonton today saying "everyone's job is on the line, including mine." However there have been no firings in the wake of the Eskimos' 0-4 start to the 2010 season. LeLacheir said "Danny (Macoicca) and Richie (Hall) understand that winning is the only option" and that losing is "unacceptable".The team President said there will be some lineup changes for the team's Friday home game against B.C.
BEVERIDGE RETIRES
Hamilton, Ontario - Hamilton Tiger-Cats safety Sandy Beveridge announced his retirement from football today after eight CFL seasons. Beveridge has accepted a firefighter position with the Hamilton Fire Department."This was an extremely difficult decision," said Beveridge. "I am still passionate about being a Tiger-Cat and will always bleed Black and Gold, but I could not pass up this exceptional opportunity outside of football. I would like to thank the people of Hamilton, the Tiger-Cats organization, the coaches, and especially my teammates for providing me with eight years of great memories. I look forward to continue to serve and represent to City of Hamilton in a different role with Hamilton Fire Department."
Beveridge originally joined the Ticats as an undrafted free agent on May 14, 2003. After earning a roster spot in his first professional training camp, the UBC product went on to play in 105 regular season games over eight seasons, making 124 defensive tackles, 77 special teams tackles and five interceptions.
"It's a bittersweet day here in TigerTown with the retirement of Sandy Beveridge," said Ticats President Scott Mitchell. "Beyond his leadership and ability on the field, there is no single player that has done more for the Tiger-Cats and this community since Bob Young took over the ownership of this proud franchise. He has been selfless in his dedication to all of our community causes and it's only appropriate that Sandy will continue to serve this great community with the fire department moving forward. We wish Sandy the best and thank him for his outstanding contribution to the Tiger-Cats both on and off the field."
FERRARO TRADED
Froese is entering his third year in the Western Hockey League and was a fourth round selection, 119th overall, of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE
REGINA BEACH -- Yes today's column comes from on location. As soon as that plane touched down from Calgary on Sunday it was out of the suit, into the sandals and off to the sand. It WAS the hottest day of the year wasn't it? The thermometer in my Titan Auto CKRM sports cruiser said 31 degrees and it felt like every degree of it.
And the heat will stay cranked up on Canada's Team throughout the week as we sort through the wreckage of Saturday's 40-20 loss in Calgary.
You had to know the game would be the number one topic at the lake, just as it likely is all across the Wheat Province as we embark on Week 5.
"What happened to the Riders?" one fan at the Waterfront Bar questioned as he passed by our table on the patio.
"It's okay," said another. "We needed this. We'll s--tpump Hamilton on Saturday."
"I never miss In The Huddle!" said a guy in a ponytail and a Rider shirt.
Rider Pride remains strong even though their boys took one on the chin and fell from the ranks of the unbeaten this weekend. The naysayers, of course, have been waiting for a loss such as this and on the talkshows this week we'll unleash the hounds and let them have their say. It's too draining to argue with them, plus they have reason to be upset.
Rider head coach called the game "horrible" when addressing the media upon our return to the Queen City and everyone agrees.
It's funny how blog hits and callers increase dramatically after a loss.
---
The Calgary game and the weekend surrounding it seemed to lack the buzz we've become accustomed to. Maybe I should've left the hotel more, but I didn't see as much green in downtown Calgary as I have in years past.
I've been checking the Calgary media reports and haven't seen any stories of all hell breaking loose in the stands at the game. Security was increased 20% for the match and although they had their hands full, I haven't heard of too many problems.
A bunch of Calgary police officers biked past Carm and me outside the stadium after the game and were discussing the "public intoxication" citations they handed out. Other than that, it seemed pretty tame. Perhaps you were at the game and have something to report?
---
It had to be tough for the Rider fans in the crowd as the score stretched to 40-11 Stampeders in the fourth quarter. Former Pat and current Edmonton Oiler Jordan Eberle was there in his "DRESSLER 7" jersey and said he was getting heckled pretty badly late in the game. I asked him if the Stamps fans knew who he was and he said "Yah".
We could also be on the verge of another mascot controversy. I've had several reports of Gainer the Gopher getting roughed up by the Calgary Vipers (baseball) mascot during the ball game in the afternoon. I'm looking into it.
---
Full marks to the Stampeders for their emotional effort in earning the victory and a share of first-place with the Riders. We were fortunate to see both "Good Hank" and "Bad Hank" in the same game. Unfortunately for the Riders he was good more often than he was bad.
What went wrong for the Riders? Pass protection and run defense were the main culprits but special teams were spotty as well. Slotback Weston Dressler said it was hard for Darian to be effective with Calgary defenders in his face all night long.
"I don't know if it's a wakeup call," Dressler continued. "I don't feel like this team was sleeping or in cruise control or anything like that. We're a team that's focused and ready to win every game. It's one of those games that got out of hand at the end. We'll learn from it and move on."
---
As tough as the loss was to swallow, especially since it was IN Calgary, the notion I've received from many Rider observers is "at least we're not Edmonton!"
The Eskimos are off to their worst start since 1965 at 0-4 and coach Richie Hall has to be feeling the heat. A rumour was floated that perhaps he'll be demoted to defensive coordinator but I put no stock in that one.
"We haven't learned anything," Hall said on Sunday. "We're not mentally or physically tough enough. We can't be a counter-puncher."
Oh well that's up to them to figure out. It's what I call a "B.T.T.U." (Better Them Than Us).
---
The Riders got the raspberry from Toronto Star writer Damien Cox on TSN's The Reporters on Sunday. Here's his comment:
"My thumb is down this week to the apparent reality that Ottawa's new CFL team, whenever it starts, will not be called the Rough Riders. Now I know it was a long-standing joke that two teams in the CFL were named the Roughriders.
"To me it was a link to the past, and an opportunity for the new Ottawa team to make that link and establish a new identity in Ottawa. It's not that they don't own the name - they do now - it's that the Saskatchewan Roughriders don't want them to. The second team in everybody's heart in Canada kind of looks like a big bully in this case."
My thumb is down to Cox. How can ANYBODY want a nine team league with two teams bearing the same name?
I don't get it.
---
We'll be back on the air today with another Chilis Big Mouth Monday in The Sports Cage on 620 CKRM from 4-6pm. We'll take calls from the Rider Nation and we hope to be joined by Rider DB Lance Frazier.
---
That's all I got for now. Perhaps I'll tack on more later.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

COACH MILLER'S SUNDAY COMMENTS
Q. Quite a game!
MILLER: It was a horrible game. I've said in the past couple weeks we have areas to improve on and certainly I've pointed out some of those areas. Just about everywhere. Our pass protection wasn't as good as it might've been so we had a lot of pressure on our quarterback. He didn't make as good of decisions as he can. He threw interceptions and we fumbled the ball. We didn't stop the run very well.
Q. Did the Stamps want it more?
MILLER: It was a big deal for us. I'm not going to say they wanted it more. We wanted to win the football game and going into the fourth quarter we were in striking distance. But it got away from us.
Q. Has your team been as consistent as you'd like?
MILLER: Certainly not and we will become more consistent through work and experience. Darian is still a young QB and has learning to do. And our systems need to be polished and worked on.
Q. Why did you keep him in the whole game?
MILLER: Because he needed the experience. He needed to be in there in that situation, scramble and battle back. He was strong at the end of the game.
Q. Does Calgary have your number?
MILLER: I wouldn't say that. The exhibition loss was much different than the game last night. Again, going into the fourth quarter last night we were close enough to win the football game.
Q. How did you feel about the play of punter Eddie Johnson?
MILLER: Again we'll talk about that as we go through today and tomorrow and we'll make a decision on that.
Q. Will you make changes on the offensive line after that game?
MILLER: Probably not too much. We'll just probably work at getting the guys working there a little more proficient. It's a unit that's been battle-tested and they're pretty good. We just have to make sure they're doing the right things at the right times.
Q. Any injuries?
MILLER: No real serious ones.
Q. Pride?
MILLER: Feelings yes. Not a blow to the pride yet but certainly to the feelings.
SUNDAY SPORTS
---
It took five years, but Steven Jyles earned his first CFL victory as a starting quarterback. He threw for 267 yards and a touchdown, and ran in two T-D's as Winnipeg beat Edmonton 47-21.
---
Dean Wilson is one round away from winning the RBC Canadian Open. He's got a good start with a four-stroke lead. It's the first time Wilson has held the lead through 54 holes at a P-G-A Tour event. Canadians Adam Hadwin and Jon Mills are nine shots behind.
---
A busy day for the Toronto Blue Jays. They've got to make up a rained out game with a day-night doubleheader in Detroit. Jays starter Brett Cecil gets the start in the first game, then Jesse Litsch take over in the evening. Jose Bautista drove in two as the Jays beat the Tigers 3-2 last night.
---
Will Power is in prime position to continue his Indy Car domination. He's got the pole at the Honda Indy Edmonton. Power has won the last two races, and four total this season. Toronto's Paul Tracy starts 15th, ahead of Lachenaie, Quebec native Alex Tagliani in 19th.
---
It will be a familiar victory lap for Alberto Contador in Paris. He's set to win his third Tour de France in the final stage. Contador has the overall lead on Andy Schleck, who placed second last year to the Spaniard. Canada's Ryder Hesjedal is seventh overall.

ARGOS WIN
HIGH SCHOOL DAZE
FRIDAY RODSERVATIONS
- Montreal beat Hamilton 37-14 Thursday night to kickoff Week 4 in the CFL. The Als are 3-1 while the Ticats are 1-3.
- Speaking of records, there's been a lot of talk this week how "the Riders could be 2-1" or "the Eskimos could be 2-1" or "the Bombers could be 3-0". NO! Your record is what you ARE. If the Riders lose in Calgary Saturday night, both teams will be 3-1 and thus eye-to-eye. Just like when the Riders were 9-9 for three straight seasons a few years back. It's because they were MEDIOCRE! Are the 2010 Riders for real? Saturday night's game could answer that question.
- Hockey is Canada's game. When Sportsnet spends eight minutes out of a 27 minute sportscast discussing the contract of Ilya Kovalchuk on Thursday, you come to this realization.
- Speaking of hockey, I hear the Regina Pats will take on the Calgary Hitmen this winter at McMahon Stadium in the WHL's first-ever outdoor game.
- I'm also told there are several outstanding candidates for the Edmonton Oilers play-by-play job. I am not one of them. As I told the Edmonton media this week, I am not pursuing an NHL job at this time. Right now my whole life is my family. Besides, my Dad didn't get to the NHL till after the age of 50 and he's been there 22 years and counting. I don't plan to wait that long, but now is not the time.
- I've picked Toronto to win the Braley Bowl Friday night in the Rogers Centre when the Argos face the B.C. Lions. However I have a nagging feeling this could be Travis Lulay's coming out party, and he'll supplant Casey Printers as starting QB in B.C. for good. Still, I'm going with the Double Blue.
- Rider games in Calgary have a mini-Grey Cup feel and Saturday's clash is no different. I'm SO JACKED for the match. I asked Rider assistant coach Jim Daley on CKRM's Coaches Show if I'm making too much of it.
"No, you're not overstating it," Daley replied. It's gonna be GREAT!
- We all want to see Rob Bagg and Weston Dressler in a 40-yard dash to declare once and for all who's faster. Rob told me last week Weston's faster but I'm sure if you asked Dressler, he'd say Bagg is.
- I enjoyed Rob Vanstone's column this week in the Leader Post about possible endorsements by Roughrider players for local businesses. Rob Bagg for the Grab Bag Confectionary was my favourite. If I could suggest two more they would be Omarr "Captain" Morgan and Joel "Taco" Bell.
- Rider centre Jeremy O'Day is raising money for Jesse's Journey and his own personal scholarship at Edinboro University on his website at http://www.jeremyoday.com/. Among the items in the online auction are a John Chick autographed Colts jersey and 100-year anniversary football autographed by current and former Rider greats. Please help Jeremy out!
- I thought Andy Fantuz's "Rider Blackout" idea for the last game was a great one but unfortunately it fizzled. I fear a blackout won't be achieved until the Riders place 30,048 black t-shirts on each and every Mosaic Stadium seat before a game.
- Three Riders were asked by CTV's Lee Jones this week what caused the team's turnaround from mediocrity to their current state and Lee got three different answers. Omarr Morgan credits Jim Hopson, Fantuz credits a change in coaches in 2007 and O'Day credits an influx of quality people as players. Interesting. What's your theory?
- Ticket sales are slow for the August 14 Canadian Football Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Ceremony in Saskatoon which I'll have the honour of MC'ing. C'mon Saskatoon! GET YOUR TICKETS!
- There's a 100-year reunion for Rider Cheerleaders, Dream Team members, Golden Girls and Rider Cheer team athletes on Thanksgiving weekend. If you know a former Rider cheerleader, have her email Debbie Ruhr at riderreunion@hotmail.com. Who wants to see them do a routine at a game?? I do.
- The U of R Rams Football Camp for 8-13 year olds has a few spots left for the offensive/defensive line positions. The camp runs July 30-August 2 at the U of R. Contact Michelle at the Rams office at 585-5480 to register.
- Why didn't anybody tell me about the "Saskatchatoon" joke in the new Adam Sandler movie 'Grown-Ups'? That was SPECTACULAR. So was the movie.
- We almost walked out of the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz flick 'Knight and Day'. I suggest waiting for it to hit Rainbow Cinemas ($4) if you go at all. Not a strong effort.
- Rider fans set a new record last weekend for Purolator Tackles Hunger. 69,700 lbs of food were raised, an increase of 4,800 lbs from last year. It all goes towards the Regina Food Bank.
- Not a surprise here ... the Rider-Eskimo game on Saturday was the most-watched sports broadcast on Canadian TV this week.
- A great tweet on Twitter this week from American sportstalk radio god Jim Rome:
From: @jimrome
"What deadline? The Wrangler Wearin' Whippersnapper Brett Favre is a beauty. The only guy who WANTS you to think he's dumber than he really is"
- I saw Favre wearing strings on his sunglasses this week. We may be old, but you can't say sunglass strings aren't cool.
- Speaking of being old, I think I have a hernia. How do you know if you have one?
- Nine members of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish NCAA hockey team are in hot water for under-aged drinking. Appropriately enough, one of the players is named Jared Beers.
- Did you watch the Blue Jays' games this week? How about the attendance in Kansas City and Baltimore? How long can the massive imperfections of MLB's class system contine to be ignored?
- Get out and catch the division-leading Regina Red Sox tonight as they host the Yorkton Cardinals at 7:05 at Gord Currie Field.
- A caller to the Sports Cage this week pointed out that between Geoff Currier and me, we've got 24 years covered out of 100 years of Roughrider football on radio. It's a staggering and humbling observation.
- Why are striking casino workers yelling at me to honk in support for them when I motor by on Saskatchewan Drive?
Hey! Don't be so militant. I've got plenty more sympathy for nurses on the picket line than I do for blackjack dealers. Creating a disturbance isn't a good way to get people to side with your plight.
- Don't miss Four Seasons Football Friday in the Sports Cage! John Lynch will host the show from 4-6pm on 620 CKRM with guests Scott Schultz and Harvey Johnson.
AND NOW I'M OFF TO CALGARY. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND AND AS ALWAYS, THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!

RIDER ROSTER CHANGES
The Saskatchewan Roughriders will be making at least two roster changes for Saturday's first-place showdown in Calgary. Punter Eddie Johnson (pictured) will replace sophomore punter Louie Sakoda on the roster. Also non-import cornerback Leron Mitchell will replace Donovan Alexander (hamstring). Middle linebacker Barrin Simpson says he has recovered sufficiently from turf toe and will be in the lineup.PATS, CKRM SIGN EXTENSION
The Regina Pats and 620 CKRM have signed a three-year extension to their broadcast agreement which initially began in 1995. As part of the deal, Dan Plaster will takeover as the new Voice of the Regina Pats.We will make a formal announcement on the Sports Cage on 620 CKRM this afternoon at 4:00. I've been in meetings regarding the announcement this afternoon and therefore had to miss Rider practice. Working on an update there...
