See You In A Week!

This blogger's gone till April. Happy Easter!

Coach Miller On Sportsline

Rider head coach Ken Miller was on our show last night. You can download the show here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?zn1hio2etn3.

If downloading isn't for you, here's a recap of the show courtesy CFLDaily.com:

- Not Sure if free agent DE Jonathan Brown would fit in with this scheme. But the Riders have talked with him.

- Four Quarterbacks, Kent Smith being the 4th. He has "knocked around the NFL".

- Two Defensive Ends at least will sign before the week is out... One experienced player who was in the NFL. Other is just out of college.

- Has a Twitter account, tries to get an entry or two a day... fans get to see an inside look at what is going on. It's an opportunity to give fans a chance to check-in and see some things they don't normally see/hear. Stay interested in what is going on.

- SB Weston Dressler had problems in ankle, doctor removed fragments of cartilage and bones, which set him back. He's expected to be ready for training camp.

- WR Rob Bagg pretty serious injury, plate on collarbone... recovered really well. Lifting weights, going to be ready.

- RB Hugh Charles showing lots of ability, anxious to give him chance to show more at RB.

- Excellent depth at OL "Right now". Amazing how much leadership comes from the men upfront.

- Really pleased to have depth at tackle (Goodspeed, Bell). Goodspeed coveted by OL Coaches in Sask. Happy to have him, great character, great leader. Bell tremendous job last year. Interesting to see the battle in camp.

- If the Riders have to cut one or more, it won't be a happy day. Tremendous people, good players. Has been in conversations about trades, nothing concrete.

- Retired DB Eddie Davis very important on/off field. Everyone in organization respected him. Tremendous impact on team. Great communication with other DB's.

- Have staff evaluating Draft talent. Alex Smith coordinated it for # of years. Taman good at Canadian draft. Craig Smith worked with Lions, Ti-Cats. Strong. Dyce strong in draft as well. Lots of brainpower.

- Rod has talked to several players who enjoy the new Front Office structure. Players believe pressure off him. Kenny would agree. Says Taman has been better than he thought.

- Constantly amazed by fans and response to the team. Announcement about 100th Anniversary soon. Really excited for this season.

- Dalton Bell trade- Tremendous young man, but didn't make decisions very well in practice. Bergquist and Harrell showed tremendous work ethic, both good decision makers. Looking forward to working with them.

Belli Suspended

Toronto, ON (March 29, 2010) - The Canadian Football League (CFL) has suspended Toronto Argonauts Adriano Belli for the team's first 2010 regular season game for a pattern of inappropriate behaviour that culminated with Belli's pre-game confrontation with members of a visiting team on November 7th, 2009.

While the decision to suspend was made by the Commissioner late last season, and was shared with Belli and the Argonauts, it was not communicated publicly at the time out of respect for the CFL Playoffs and Grey Cup.

Warriors-Hitmen On Access/Shaw

The Hitmen defeated the Warriors 7-3 in Moose Jaw on Saturday night in Game 6 of the series to even up the best-of-seven set at 3-3 and force tonight's seventh and deciding game.

The Hitmen have scored 19 goals through their three wins in the series, but only six goals through their three losses.  Kozun leads all WHL players with seven post-season assists.

The Monday Morning Goalie

In today's column we have for you hockey and football, football and hockey, and for a nice change of pace, some baseball.

So here we go:

---

What an exciting night tonight is in the Western Hockey League playoffs. TWO GAME SEVENS!

Moose Jaw visits Calgary at 7:00 in a one game showdown to see who goes to Round 2 while out west Everett hosts Kelowna in Game 7. You can catch the Warriors and Hitmen on the radio in these parts with our buddy James Gallo on Country 100.7 FM

---

Medicine Hat and Tri-City advanced Sunday night with a pair of Game 6 victories. The Tigers beat Kootenay 4-1 and the Americans took out Chilliwack 4-1.

If the Hitmen win tonight, all of this blogger's Round 1 predictions will be right.

---

If you've been following along on the blog over the past while, you've noticed I've spent much more time in banquet halls than in the rink or the football stadium lately, but I did pick up a tidbit of interest last week.

I heard it in both Moose Jaw and Regina, and that is former Moose Jaw Warriors GM Chad Lang could soon be joining the Regina Pats.

Would I be surprised? No. I know he and Brent Parker have a strong relationship. But I'd be surprised if any announcement is imminent since Chad is working with the Wheat Kings helping out with the hockey operations side of the Memorial Cup.

But where there's smoke, there's usually fire.

---

Here's a weekend text from Garrett Mitchell of the AHL's Hershey Bears:

"Hey rod just thought I would drop a note for your blog. Tonight in hershey a guy had a pats jersey on. Thought that was pretty cool"

Garrett is a right-winger for the Pats who was drafted by the Washington Capitals last year and is with their farm team. I asked him how it's going down there:

"Its going good down here haven't played but the team is amazing. They have so much skill"

---

In discussions with several Pats fans lately, I've found they all like and respect assistant coach Shaun Sutter. Their opinions are based almost entirely on his blunt and honest postgame interviews on CKRM.

---

Downtown Regina drivers will notice a series of new streetlights this morning. For 100 years 11th and 12th avenue were one way streets but next month they become two way. I think it's a great idea.

---

Regina Red Sox GM Bernie Eiswirth took quite the shots at the Pats at Saturday night's fund-raising dinner. He noted how I tentatively booked my appearance for the dinner based on whether or not the Pats were in the playoffs. To that, Bernie said they replied a month and a half ago with "then we'll see you on the 27th!"

He took some other shots, but we won't repeat them here. However here are some of the best quotes from Tommy John, a lefty who had a 26-year Major League Baseball career, pitching in four all-star games and four world series. His 288 wins are the most by any pitcher who's NOT in the Hall of Fame:

- I hear all these funny things about mound visits. In all my years in baseball I never had a manager say something to be that was funny when he came out to the mound. I was the joke. There can't be two jokesters out there!

- The worst thing to happen to baseball was Watergate. Now everybody wants to be Woodward and Bernstein and break the story. You used to be able to go out and drink with the writers and rail on a manager or a player but now you can't. Used to be they'd say 'is this for print?' and if you said no, that was the end of it.

- Should Pete Rose be in the Hall of Fame? Yes. There are some despicable people in the Hall of Fame. Ty Cobb might have killed three or four people.

Rose should just have a disclaimer at the bottom of his plaque.

- Bert Blyleven will get into the Hall of Fame next year. Bank on it.

- How would I do against Barry Bonds? Pre-steroids or post-steroids?

- I pitched for so long, and so long ago, that the guys who could've voted me in the Hall of Fame have died.

- I wasn't very good. I just played on good teams. That's the secret to being a good pitcher; play on a team that fields the ball well!

- Thank God Dr. Jobe did that elbow surgery and named it after me (Tommy John surgery). What if he was a proctologist? Think about that.

- Who was the toughest hitter I ever face? Ken Griffey Sr.

I could get Ken Griffey Jr. out. He was 12 at the time.

---

I changed up the look of the blog for a brief time on the weekend. The new site was cleaner and more organized but many argued it was too bland. They were right. It's not me. So back we go to colourful but unorganized.

---

Isn't it odd that Eric Tillman misstepped once and his life and career are shattered. Tiger Woods missteps ALL OVER the place and is back golfing in 4 1/2 months. No one said life is fair. That's what I teach my kid.

---

You've got to love watching the AHL on the NHL Network. Names like Krahn, Macachek, Postma, Sceviour, Peters, etc. were great to see and that was just in yesterday's Texas-Chicago game. It would seem Sportsnet or The Score would be better off airing that than poker.

By the way the Texas Stars clinched a playoff spot with the 5-0 victory. Maybe Big Ern in Swift Current and I (Stars fans) will have to follow the AHL playoffs with Dallas out of the running.

---

Rider coach Ken Miller seems to be embracing the Twitter phenomenon. Here's an update he sent on Sunday:

"From: @Coach_KenMiller

I'm looking forward to a possible announcement about us signing a couple of defensive ends in the near future."

Kenny will be our headline guest on CKRM's Sportsline tonight at 6:05 and we'll delve further into this. We'll also get an update on star receiver Weston Dressler, who said on the weekend he's "almost fully recovered" from the broken leg he suffered late last season.

That doesn't sound too positive does it?

---

People are buzzing about the phenomenal Rider season ticket sales. They're at 23,000 now and plan to cap sales at 25,000 leaving 5,000 each day for walk-up. Personally I'd like to see them sell 30,945 season tickets if they can. Why not? It's a business. And you can always find tickets (Classifieds, online, etc.)

We're one losing season away from not coming close to selling that joint out. Let's strike while the iron's hot.

---

So are we getting a new stadium or not?

---

Several have asked why linebacker Barrin Simpson is named the "Minister of Defence".

My buddy Jeff Armstead runs Barrin's website and reports Simpson is actually an ordained Minister.

---

We're going to hear all summer from those who are against David Braley owning two CFL teams. In fact, we're hearing from them now. This is what the Toronto Sun's Steve Simmons had to say about it on TSN's The Reporters:

SIMMONS: My thumb is down to Jamal Robertson's free agent signing with the BC Lions and this has nothing to do with Robertson changing teams and everything to do with the fact his former team, the Toronto Argonauts, and his current team, the Lions, are owned by the same man, David Braley. This is a made in Canada CFL problem that isn't about to go away. Even if everything is above board, and I suspect it is here, the signing of Robertson, the Argos best offensive player last season, leaves questions. How do we know there isn't influence? And isn't it just a little convenient that the Lions need a running back and the lousy Argos couldn't find a way to sign their leading rusher?

Personally I have no issue with this AS LONG as these teams are operating above board. I have trust in the integrity of Wally Buono that this won't be a shady partnership.

---

My favourite line from the Scott Schultz roast came from Rider linebacker Mike McCullough:

"We're here tonight to talk about a balding, talentless egomaniac. But enough about Rod Pedersen!"

---

Erin Andrews could become a TV free agent.

Andrews, in negotiations for a new contract with ESPN, says she wants to continue her job as a sideline reporter on ESPN's college football and basketball coverage.

"I want to stay covering sports. I love sports," she said Sunday.

But if she doesn't sign a new deal, she could become a free agent when her contract expires in July.

Andrews is appearing on sister network ABC's Dancing With the Stars.

How was Tim McGraw? Did any of you go see him and Lady Antebellum in Saskatoon last night?

---

We went past the four year anniversary of this blog and I missed it. This blog was born March 19, 2006. Happy anniversary to me.

---

Things are getting slow around here these days. I might have to start blogging about NASCAR. I tried that a few years ago but it didn't hold my interest.

Have a great week! Talk to you tonight on Sportsline....

WHL PLAYOFF HOCKEY LIVE ON SHAW/ACCESS

Emerson Etem and the Medicine Hat Tigers welcome Dustin Sylvester and the Kootenay Ice for Game 6 of their Husky WHL Eastern Conference quarter-final series tonight.

Tonight's WHL playoff contest between the Ice and Tigers can be seen LIVE throughout western Canada on SHAW and SHAW Direct channel 299 (6:00pm MST), and I assume across Saskatchewan on all Access affiliate stations.

The Tigers defeated the Ice 5-2 in Game 5 of the series in Cranbrook, B.C., on Thursday night for their third straight win in the series, and now have the chance to win the series and move on to the second round of the post-season with a victory tonight at home.

Should the Ice win tonight, they will host the Tigers for Game 7 of the series on Tuesday in Cranbrook, B.C.

Sunday Sports

There will be no gold medal, or silver, for Canada's Jennifer Jones, as she was rocked by Scotland 10-4 in the semifinals of the world women's curling championship. Scotland plays Germany for the title on Sunday. Jones faces Sweden for third place.

---

A three goal third period lifted the Calgary Hitmen to a 7-3 win at the Moose Jaw Warriors in WHL playoff action Saturday night. The win prolonged Calgary's season, and forces a Game 7 in their first round series Monday night.

---

The Calgary Flames are in action this afternoon doing everything they can to avoid being eliminated from the NHL playoff race. The Flames will look for a rare road win in Washington when they face a high-octane Capitals offence. Calgary is 0-4 with a tie since their last win at Washington, 5-4 on March 13, 1999.

---

The Toronto Blue Jays continue to shape their roster heading toward the start of the regular season. Outfield hopeful Joey Gathright was released this morning while infielder Brad Emaus and outfielder Chris Lubanski were re-assigned. Toronto represented the 13th stop in Gathright's professional career, and fifth in the big leagues.

---

The last two slots in the Final Four will be settled today. Michigan State and Tennessee battle in St. Louis for the berth from the Midwest Regional, while Duke and Baylor settle the South Regional in Houston.

---

The Toronto Raptors hope to hang on to their post-season spot when they take on the Heat in Miami. Toronto has lost 12 of its last 16 games and the match begins an important two-game trip for the Raptors, who visit seventh-place Charlotte on Monday. The Bobcats are two and a half games ahead of the Raptors in the Eastern Conference.

Dressler Visits Bismarck

Weston Dressler says football has given him some tremendous opportunities, so why not give back? The Canadian Football League star is in his hometown of Bismarck, ND this week for a camp for kids.

Dressler and former Texas Tech star Graham Harrell are teammates in Saskatchewan and are involved in the 'Quarterback and Receivers Camp' put on by Healthways Training Center.

The camp focuses on four things: tactical, technical, psychological and physical.

"With this camp, we are trying to do something different and not so much the drills and skills of camp, but also a little bit more and for these high school kids," Dressler said. "Maybe they can learn something a little bit more from myself or from Graham (Harrell) as guys who played college football and are playing in the Canadian Football League now.

Harrell was only too happy to help out at the camp.

"It is a sport that has obviously done a lot for both Weston and I," Harrell said. "It is what we both love and to have an opportunity to teach these kids about it and get these kids passionate about it too and work with them and it will be really exciting. "

Dressler says he's almost fully recovered from his broken leg last year, and expects to be ready for the Roughriders training camp, as well as their opener on July 1st.

The Kids Camp continues through Sunday.

BARRIN SIMPSON JOINS GREEN AND WHITE

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import linebacker Barrin Simpson to a contract. Financial details of the signing were not released.

Simpson is heading into his tenth season in the CFL and has spent the last four with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The 32-year old started his CFL career in 2001 with the B.C. Lions where he spent five seasons. In his first CFL season, Simpson had a league leading 115 defensive tackles which earned him the title of the CFL's Rookie of the Year.

In 139 CFL games played, the Mississippi State product has tallied 782 defensive tackles, 44 special team tackles, 29 quarterback sacks, 16 fumble recoveries and ten interceptions.

Over the course of his career Simpson has been named a divisional and CFL all-star six times, and was also named Western Division Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 and was the Eastern Nominee for Defensive Player of the Year in 2006.

In 2009, Simpson had 84 defensive tackles, three special team tackles, two quarterback sacks and one interception in 13 games played.

Friday Rodservations

Some quick thoughts entering the last weekend of March:

---

I was planning to drop a bombshell on the blog this morning. I got a tip yesterday that Scott Schultz was considering coming out of retirement. I immediately checked with the retired Roughrider nose tackle and his response was "I'm entertaining it. Things are running smoothly at my shop."

He was referring to his flourishing insurance agency, Schultz-Gareau Insurance on Rochdale Blvd in Regina. He quickly followed that up by saying "Please don't say anything yet." I literally begged him to allow me to break the story today on the blog and his comment was "Not yet please. But I promise you'll be the first to know."

He let me stew with the news for a couple of hours and then we hooked up in Moose Jaw for the Moose Jaw Elks Lodge Scott Schultz Retirement Roast and I pressed him on it further, to which he admitted he was only joking and that the rumour was bogus. There is NO chance he'll ever play again.

Sigh. At least he got some amusement out of it. Plenty of photos from the roast are posted below.

---

The Saskatoon Blades are moving on to Round 2 of the WHL playoffs after a 5-2 victory in Red Deer in Game 4 of their first round series. Blades broadcaster Les Lazurak reports it's the fourth sweep in franchise history, including '87 (Prince Albert), '89 (Lethbridge) and '94 (Swift Current). The Blades are off now until a week from today, but still won't have head coach & GM Lorne Molleken back until Game 3 of the Conference Semifinals due to suspension which is a darned shame.

Meanwhile the Warriors and Hitmen are going back to Moose Jaw for Game 6. The Hitmen stayed alive with a 5-2 victory in front of 7138 fans in the Saddledome last night. Moose Jaw's series lead has been cut to 3-2 heading into tomorrow's game in the Crushed Can.

Sadly, quite a few of the folks in Moose Jaw last night told me they think the Hitmen will come back and win this series. I predicted that would happen on the Monday Morning Goalie this week but I hope that it doesn't. It's hard not to like those pesky Warriors. If you have a chance, get out there and support them tomorrow night. Whether you're there or not, it'll be ear-splitting in that arena.

---

We're not getting too serious on the blog today. It's Friday, and I've put WAY more work into these upcoming public speaking appearances so I haven't concentrated too much on blogging. But here are some randoms:

- Cindy and I had the pleasure of sitting with George Reed at the Schultz roast last night. For many years George ran the CFLPA and we talked about this weekend's CFL collective bargaining talks in Las Vegas. George chuckled, "Things can't be that bad if they're meeting in Las Vegas. We never got to do that!" Good point.

- It was a hilarious scene in Game 3 of the Brandon-Swift Current series in Regina. The Pats Girls - dressed up in Broncos gear - were shooting free T-shirts into the crowd with air guns. Trouble is they were Bronco shirts, and the Pats fans were throwing them back on to the ice! A la Wrigley Field.

- Bronco broadcaster Jon Keen made the comment he heard I was not happy they took over my broadcast booth for Games 3 and 4. Truth is I couldn't give a rat's a$$. Pardon the pun.

- Here's a text from a media friend of mine covering the World Womens Curling Championship in Swift Current: "I'm in Swifty. do you really have to climb a ladder to get into your broadcast booth?"

- Speaking of the World Womens, Canada's Jennifer Jones takes on Germany tonight in the 1-2 Page Playoff Game in the Credit Union I-Plex. Say what you want, but that German skip makes a good looking guy.

- Should women be upset that men watch womens curling for the babes? It's no different than women who watch football to check out the guys. Tit for tat.

- No one complains more about media coverage (or lack of media coverage) more than curling fans. Don't they realize the more they complain, the LESS coverage you want to give them?

- Did anybody else see Ann Coulter in those boots at the U of C the other night? Her blog is here:http://www.anncoulter.com/

- Team Canada world championship head coach Craig MacTavish said on CJME's Sports Night last night that Jordan Eberle's a good bet to be on Team Canada at the Worlds this spring. And Mac-T is the coach.

- I ran into City Councillor Chris Szarka in Chuck E. Cheese on Tuesday. I know that sounds strange, but the fact is we were there celebrating our kids' birthdays. Szarka is fresh back from a relief visit to Haiti so I said to him, "Tell me something about Haiti I don't know."

He said "80% of the population is illiterate."

I said "You mean like Moose Jaw?" :)

He said "Well they got a helluva hockey game. Better than yours!"

He got me.

- The Phoenix Coyotes are poised to have one of the best single season turnarounds in NHL history this year. Their coach is Moosimin, Saskatchewan's Dave Tippett. Smooth move by the Dallas Stars to fire him after last season. Clearly HE was the problem. What do you do when you're disgruntled at the direction of your favourite team? Maybe I'll hit up the Stars message boards and anonymously slay the team's management, coaches and players. That's real cool and takes a lot of courage.

- Figure this one out; the Regina Pats had the WHL East Conference's 10th-place team this year, but were 3rd in attendance. Only Calgary and Brandon drew more fans on average than the Regina Pats. You can't say Pats fans aren't doing their part.

- How many times have you won on Roll Up Your Rim To Win this spring? I haven't won ONCE! But Tim Hortons is winning. A local business-owner who serves Tim Hortons told me this week his sales are up 50% during the Roll Up Your Rim promotion.

- Blogger Mitch Blair proposes a 1-cent tax on all goods and services in Saskatchewan to go towards the new stadium. Would you go for that?

- I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I wonder if deep down the people pushing for a retractable roof or dome may wind up relenting and get everybody onside to build a new outdoor stadium for a third of the price? Perhaps this whole Dome thing was a slight-of-hand, or an illusion.

- Why does your cel phone go wonky when you cross into America? It completely fried my car charger from Prairie Mobile Communications last weekend in Montana. We'd better get it figured out quickly. I'm headed to Vegas for a week on Tuesday.

- Pitching legend Tommy John will be in Regina tomorrow night for the Regina Red Sox annual fundraising dinner. For you media reading this, they'll have a 4:00pm media conference with Tommy at the Turvey Centre. The Red Sox said they want the dinner M.C. to be professional and to keep the jokes in good taste. Yet for some reason they hired me!

Eakin To The AHL

Swift Current Broncos forward Cody Eakin has been called up to the Washington Capitals' AHL affiliate Hershey Bears. Eakin will join the AHL's top team on Monday.

Eakin, 18 years old,  was selected by the Capitals in the 3rd round, 85th over-all in the 2009 NHL draft.

He is coming off his most successful WHL season scoring 47 goals and 91points with the Broncos this season.

Cody signed an NHL entry level contract this past October.

Rider News

Saskatchewan Roughrider President/CEO Jim Hopson announced today the ticket sales for the upcoming CFL season at Mosaic Stadium, have surpassed the 23,000 mark.

"We continue to be overwhelmed by the support of Rider Nation," stated Hopson. "We find ourselves in a unique position thanks to the dedication of our fans."

On Monday season ticket sales opened to the public and since that time, new season ticket and flex pack sales have escalated to a level where the team is now looking at capping the amount available.

"We are urging fans to get their season tickets now so that they are not disappointed," added Hopson. "For the first time we are looking at capping the amount of season tickets available, so that we can ensure there are tickets available for game day sales and flex pack redemption."

The Roughriders have set a tentative cap mark of 25,000 for season tickets and flex packs which will leave only a limited amount of season tickets available for purchase.

"There are of course still tickets available but we realize that if they continue to sell at this rate, we will have to cap them at 25,000," Hopson concluded.

Season tickets and flex packs will remain on sale until the limited quantities are sold. Flex pack redemption will take place on May 25th until May 31st while single game tickets will be available for purchase beginning on June 1st.

The team will again install temporary seating in the southwest corner in the stadium to accommodate fans and increase seating capacity at Mosaic Stadium for the 2010 season.

TIGER-CATS SIGN DYLAN BARKER TO EXTENSION

Barker played in all 18 regular season games in 2009 after missing the entire 2008 season with a leg injury.

Wheat Kings, Giants Advance

Alexander Urbom's goal at 16:27 of overtime lifted the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 3-2 triumph and a first-round sweep of the Swift Current Broncos in WHL playoff action Wednesday. A crowd of roughly 1400 fans were on hand in Regina's Brandt Centre to witness the game. The Wheat Kings now get to go home and rest before round 2 while the Broncos just go home.

The undermanned Saskatoon Blades eaked out a 2-1 victory at Red Deer on a goal by Marek Viedensky at 5:03 of overtime to push the Rebels to the brink of elimination. Saskatoon leads the series 3-0 and can wrap up the affair tonight at the Centrium. The Blades are without coach Lorne Molleken and four players who are all suspended for a Game 2 brawl.

"It's a team effort and the good thing about is we have the will to win and we continued that through all four periods," Blades assistant coach Jerome Engele said on the Blades postgame show. "These are young guys who play with a lot of adrenaline but we'll try to utilize our bench a little more in Game 4."

Engele stressed that they would prefer to end the series tonight and not go back to Saskatoon for Game 5.

"Never, ever give a team an opportunity to win a game," Engele said. "This is playoff hockey and anything can happen in the playoffs. We came here for two wins and we need one more win."

Tonight the Moose Jaw Warriors can complete an upset first round victory over the Calgary Hitmen with a win at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The Warriors lead the series 3-1 but aren't getting ahead of themselves.

"It's not over yet," Warriors defenceman Dylan McIlrath told Country 100.7 FM in Moose Jaw. "There's still one more game left to win the series. We still feel like we're the underdogs and know we need to prepare like that to win every game."

Fans in southern Saskatchewan can listen to tonight's Moose Jaw-Calgary game on Country 100.7 FM. The Saskatoon-Red Deer game is available on 92.9 The Bull in Saskatoon, and is available on the Nobex Radio Companion application on your BlackBerry.

Wheat Kings-Broncos

In Regina Wednesday night. That's the view from the Molson booth..

Urgent (SASKbudget)

REGINA - Saskatchewan residents will have to pay more for cigarettes and alcohol as the government raises taxes and prices in an effort to boost dwindling provincial. offers.

The measures are in a new budget that sees the province spend more than it takes in.

The government says it expects to collect $9.95 billion in revenue this fiscal year and spend $10.1 billion _ meaning the province must dip into its savings account to keep the books in the black.

It hopes to raise almost $36 million by hiking the tobacco tax and just over $18 million with the liquor markup.

The province is also trimming costs by cutting civil service jobs by 15 per cent _ about 1,800 full-time positions _ over four years.

Saskatchewan will also delay promised cuts to the education portion of property taxes, eliminate coverage for chiropractic treatment and shut down its government TV channel to save money.

Touchdown Atlantic Pre-Sale a Success

MONCTON - Today's one-day pre-sale of tickets for Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic has been a big success, and more than 13,000 tickets have been sold for the September 26th game here between the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos, the Canadian Football League announced.

"The response has been tremendous, with fans across Atlantic Canada rallying to our league and our game," Commissioner Mark Cohon said late today."

And there are still good seats available for when the general public sale opens tomorrow.

"When you wrap 20,000 seats around the game of Canadian football, with our big field and exciting players, every seat is a good seat in what is still an intimate venue," said Cohon.

RIDERS ADD THREE TO SECONDARY

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import defensive backs Brandon Foster, LaDarius Key and Brandon Register to contracts. Financial details of the signings were not released.

Foster (5'8 - 185lbs) played four seasons at cornerback for Texas where he played in 46 games and accumulated 106 tackles, 16 special teams tackles, five tackles for a loss, four interceptions and four fumble recoveries. The 25-year old signed as a free agent with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts in May 2008 where he remained until July 2009.

Key (5'8 – 178 lbs) played 30 games for McNeese State at cornerback where he tallied 65 tackles, eight pass knockdowns, four tackles for a loss, three quarterback sacks and one interception. He was named to the all-conference team his senior season after recording 32 tackles and three tackles for a loss. The 24-year old signed as a free agent with the Roughriders in week six of the 2009 CFL season and spent time on the practice roster before being released.

Register (5'10 – 195 lbs) played four seasons for Alabama Birmingham.  He accumulated 123 tackles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries at defensive back for the Blazers. In 2007 he spent time with the NFL's Washington Redskins and in 2008 signed with the Georgia of the AFL. He spent the 2009 season playing arena football with the Louisville Fire.

Brodsky, Molleken Speak/Dub Playoff Recap

Saskatoon Blades owner Jack Brodsky is defending coach and GM Lorne Molleken in the wake of Tuesday's overwhelming discipline by the WHL (see two posts below). Molleken's been suspended for four games including tonight's Game 3 in Red Deer.

Saskatoon leads the series 2-0 and the Rebels have yet to score a goal so far. That led to them trying to take out Blades goalie Steven Stanford on Sunday, causing Molleken to instigate a line brawl with 52 seconds left.

"The goalie was not being protected and we protected our goalie," Brodsky told CJWW Radio in Saskatoon. "That's why we did what we did. It's unfortunate it's played out the way that it has but we felt like Red Deer was taking liberties with Steven Stanford and we didn't feel the referees were looking after that."

Molleken's voice wavered with emotion as he addressed the situation with the Voice of the Blades, Les Lazurak.

"It's a situation that we'll deal with as a team from top to bottom," said Molleken. "We'll put it behind us and move forward."

Assistant coach Dave Struch will take over for the next four games while Molleken won't be allowed in the arena for two hours before the game, nor an hour afterwards.

"I have all the confidence in the world in Dave's abilities as a coach and more importantly, so do the players," stated Molleken. "I don't think we'll miss a beat and I know David has things well under hand."

---

There's always a first round upset in the WHL playoffs but few would've predicted it could be orchestrated by Moose Jaw. The Warriors upset Calgary 4-3 Tuesday night in the Crushed Can and now lead the Hitmen 3-1 in the first round series. Moose Jaw can close out the series tomorrow night in Calgary.

---

Fans coming to Game 4 of the Brandon-Swift Current series tonight in Regina's Brandt Centre can bring their brooms. The Wheat Kings dropped the Broncos 5-2 last night before a crowd of just under 1500 in the Queen City. Brandon can complete the sweep tonight.

---

Other WHL Quarterfinal scores:

East
Medicine Hat 4 Kootenay 1 (Ice lead 2-1)
West
Chilliwack 5 Tri-City 1 (Americans lead 2-1)
Kelowna 5 Everett 3 (Silvertips lead 2-1)
Vancouver 5 Kamloops 4 OT (Giants lead 3-0)

CFL Expansion Talk Again

Moncton is a frontrunner for a Canadian Football League franchise in Atlantic Canada, according to the commissioner.

A decision to expand the league won't happen quickly, Mark Cohon said.

But the success of a Sept. 26 game in Moncton — the CFL's first regular season game in Atlantic Canada — will play a role, he said.

Tickets for the game, dubbed Touchdown Atlantic, are scheduled to go on sale Wednesday.

"We obviously want to ensure that this is a success first," Cohon said.

"And then if we can expand [the Moncton Stadium] and make it a little bit bigger and then look for local ownership . … And through this process, you know, I want to get out and meet the business leaders in the region to see if there is any interest.

"I think over time if there really is the community backing, you know, there's the potential, but again it will take some time."

The expansion fee for a franchise in Atlantic Canada would be more than $7 million, Cohon said.

The Moncton game will be held at the new Moncton Stadium, which is still under construction at the University of Moncton.

"It regularly holds close to 10,000 people we're going to add another 10,000 seats," Cohon said. "But also we've looked at Moncton and it really is becoming the entertainment capital of the region."

Tickets to see the Toronto Argonauts take on the Edmonton Eskimos go on sale Wednesday for fans who pre-registered, Thursday for the general public.

Prices will range from $29 to $79, but more than half of the tickets will be less than $50.

Cohon has said the prices are affordable and he hopes this will draw spectators from across the Maritimes.

Nothing For Wallin?

Here's the WHL's verdict on the Blades-Rebels Sunday brawl. Let me go on record as saying this is very unfair. By not suspending Rebels' coach Jesse Wallin, the league is saying it's open-season on goalies. And the suspension of Cowen doesn't count. He's just doing what he's told:

• Saskatoon F Randy McNaught is gone for five games.
• Saskatoon GM/head coach Lorne Molleken will miss four games.
• Saskatoon F Sena Acolatse, F Darian Dziurzynski and D Duncan Siemens all drew three-game suspensions.
• Red Deer F Josh Cowen gets four games for running Saskatoon G Steven Stanford.
• Each team was fine $250 for warmup violations.
• The Blades were fined $500 for being in their second line brawl of the season.
• The Blades were fined an additional $3,500 for "actions of the club."

ESKS SIGN GORDON

(Edmonton)  The Edmonton Eskimos announce today that they have signed import defensive back Lawrence Gordon. The Florida State product has spent the past four years with the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

In 2009 he recorded 19 defensive tackles, two special teams tackles and two pass knockdowns in 11 games (seven starts).

Originally signing with the 'Cats in 2006, Gordon was named Hamilton's nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie that year.  He went on to start for the next two seasons having the best season of his career in 2008 when he recorded 72 defensive tackles, second highest on the team.

Over four seasons he has accumulated a total of 161 defensive tackles, 23 special teams tackles, 23 pass knockdowns, four interceptions, three fumble returns, one forced fumble and one tackle for loss.

"Lawrence Gordon's calling cards are his versatility and CFL experience," says Eskimo General Manager and Director of Football Operations Dannny Maciocia.  "His signing adds valuable depth to our defensive secondary".

Regina's Cooperators Centre

People have emailed in asking what the new rink is I mentioned on Monday. Here it is, one of six new ice facilities at Regina's Evraz Place.

FLAMES RECALL BRETT SUTTER FROM ABBOTSFORD

Calgary, AB – Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today that forward Brett Sutter has been recalled from the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League.

Sutter, a native of Viking, Alberta, has accumulated 24 points in 66 games this season netting nine goals and 15 assists along with 69 penalty minutes.

Brett is currently playing in his third professional season, all with the Calgary Flames AHL main affiliate.

Sutter played in four games with the Calgary Flames last season scoring his first career NHL goal.

WHL Playoff Round-up

MOOSE JAW, Sask. - Cody Sylvester and Ian Schultz each scored twice as the Calgary Hitmen thumped the Moose Jaw Warriors 7-3 in Western Hockey League playoff action Monday.

Moose Jaw still leads the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarter-final 2-1 after taking the first two games in Calgary.

The Hitmen, who finished with the WHL's best record in the regular season, got off to a quick start in the first with Sylvester scoring at 1:42 and Schultz doubling the Calgary lead at 19:08.

With the Hitmen leading 4-2 after two, Bast brought Moose Jaw to within one early in the third.

Game 4 is tonight in the Crushed Can.

Tonight in Regina, the Swift Current Broncos host Brandon in Game 3 of their first round series which the Wheat Kings lead 2-1. It's a neutral-site game, hosted by the Broncos who are forced out of their building because of the World Womens Curling Championships. Will it give Brandon an edge?

"Quite frankly I haven't thought about that a lot," revealed Wheat Kings coach Kelly McCrimmon on 880 CKLQ. "I don't think that it changes anything with respect to our preparation. We're looking at that third game being a real pivotal game.

"In terms of our team, we played pretty well at the Brandt Centre this year. Our guys will be comfortable there. At the end of the day you have to go play. It's not unique that it has a small neutral or square corners. It's 200 X 85 just like our own."

Crowds of 1500 are expected for tonight's Game 3 and tomorrow's game 4 and Wheat Kings broadcaster Bruce Luebke (of Ogema, Sask) says the games will be lacking playoff atmosphere.

"Absolutely," Luebke said on CKRM's Sportsline last night. "I don't know if you remember but in 1999 Brandon and Red Deer played a neutral-site game and there were only 1400 people there. It was just a dead atmosphere."

Are you going? Tickets are available today at the Brandt Centre box office.

Langkow Update

CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames would like to provide the following injury update on forward Daymond Langkow:

Langkow will be out of the Flames line-up indefinitely after suffering a neck injury in a game on Sunday, March 21st at Minnesota.

Oilers Recall Former Pat

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have recalled defenseman Dean Arsene from the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League.

Arsene, 29, has two goals, nine assists and 100 PIM in 56 games this year with the Falcons. He has also played in three games with the Oilers gathering four PIM.

The Monday Morning Goalie

Boy spend a weekend in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave and you miss a lot!

Where do we start?

I guess we'll start with the gongshow that occured in Saskatoon last night in Game 2 of the Blades-Rebels series. The Blades won it 4-0 by the way, to grab a 2-0 series lead.

As for the rest of the party, we'll let Blades colour commentator Dave Thomas give us the recap:

"Basically with 52 seconds to go in the game, the Rebels had been all over Blades goalie Stevie Stanford all night long," Thomas reports to the MMG. "With 52 seconds left Red Deer's Josh Cowan goes barreling into Stanford and takes a five-minute major for charging. Following the next faceoff, a 4-on-4 line brawl broke out. Even Kramer Barnstable, Red Deer's goalie, got two minutes for leaving the crease.

"Blades coach Lorne Molleken was assessed a game misconduct at the time as well. To quote Lorne 'I put my powerplay unit on the ice'. As soon as the puck hit the ice, so did the gloves. Three instigator penalties were assessed at the same time."

That "powerplay unit" Mooner was speaking of consisted of Darian Dziurzynski, Randy McNaught, Sena Acolatse and Duncan Siemens.

"It was a chickensh*t move. That's all it was," Molleken told the Saskatoon Star Phoenix after the game, refering to the Rebels running Saskatoon's goalie.

Here's a snippet from the article in today's Star Phoenix and writer Cory Wolfe:

Rebels head coach Jesse Wallin took a different opinion of Cowen’s actions.

He was driving the net, going to net to try and score a goal,” said Wallin. “We haven’t had a goal in the series yet. We’re trying to put pucks there, get traffic there and those things happen.”

Asked if Cowen’s actions were legal, Wallin paused before saying, “No comment.” In the hallway outside of the Rebels’ dressing room, Cowen requested a conference with his coach before addressing reporters. The 18-year-old winger pretty much echoed Wallin’s take on the situation.

“Honestly, I was just trying to go to the net,” said Cowen. “I think I got a little bit off-balance there and things happen like that. I mean, I didn’t do it intentionally. I just drove the net and unfortunately, I ran into him.”

Molleken said that Stanford was hit “three or four times” Sunday, adding that “No. 20 (Cowen) took it into his own hands to run (Stanford).”

---

That donnybrook has upstaged - temporarily at least - the Moose Jaw-Calgary series in which the Warriors shocked the WHL by taking Games 1 and 2 at the Saddledome (by scores of 4-2 and 4-1) to grab a 2-0 lead coming home for Game 3 tonight in the Crushed Can.

"I don't know if it's quite sunken in yet," Warriors forward Jason Bast told Country 100.7 FM in Moose Jaw. "We had a great weekend here and put it behind us and look to Game 3."

If the Warriors had any problems selling tickets, they likely won't after their early-series success.

"Everyone's very excited," Moose Jaw defenceman Kevin Smith said. "We know that we have an opportunity to take out one of the league's top teams. We're not going to change our game plan. We're going to keep on doing the same stuff and our coaches have laid it out real well."

In this blogger's opinion, Calgary likely wasn't too rattled after losing Game 1 but they HAVE to be now that they lost Game 2 as well. However this series is FAR from over. Yes I'd love to see Moose Jaw take down Calgary but there's enough veteran experience in that Hitmen organization with GM Kelly Kisio and coach Mike Williamson that they'll have their boys ready to go.

As always, Game 3 is the most pivotal in the series.

---

We must also turn our attention to the Swift Current-Brandon series which the Wheat Kings lead 2-0.

Games 3 and 4 will be played in Regina and it appears they could play the contests at the new Cooperators Centre at Evraz Place (capacity 1500). That's because Brandt Centre officials informed me Sunday that only 500 tickets per game have been sold.

---

While things are heating up in the Dub playoffs, the Regina Pats are still assessing their 2009-2010 season. I asked coach Curtis Hunt for an assessment of the first season on the bench for assistant coach Shaun Sutter.

"Well Sutsy you know what, he's a young energetic guy," Hunt smiled. "He's got lots of ideas. Sometimes I think he's a little bit naive but that's normal. He's forged great relationships with the players. He's a guy they can come to and trust and they can talk about some of the issues in their lives here at the rink and away from the rink. For a guy who was a greenhorn coming in, he's done a terrific job throughout the season and he's just going to get better."

Hunt says being a Sutter, Shaun knows the game of hockey inside out.

"How couldn't he?" Hunt laughed. "What do you think that family talks about at Christmas? It's non-stop. What a great support system he has in place. Not only with his father Brian, but his uncles and even his brother-in-law is an assistant with the Hitmen. Hockey runs through his blood. There isn't a day that goes by in this office that our office isn't buzzing with what's going on with our team, in our league, the AHL, the NHL and he's been a real pleasure to have on board."

---

I thought Jordan Eberle would be happy to get out of Regina and down to Springfield, Massachussets where he could enjoy a measure of anonymity.

Not so. Eberle scored Springfield's lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday. That gives Ebs goals in three straight games for the Falcons and six points in three games since joining the club.

Pretty soon Falcons fans will fall in love with the 19-year old Reginan whose popularity has skyrocketed so high that somebody wrote in to the blog Friday saying their family named their newborn baby girl "Eberle" last week.

That reminds me of the stories of kids named after famous Regina sports figures. Former Pat Garth Murray was named after former Pat Garth Butcher. I'm told former Pat Rhett Gordon was named after former Rider star Rhett Dawson.

Do any of your kids' names have interesting stories or originations (if that's a word)?

---

NHL note: The Oilers blasted San Jose 5-1 last night at Rexall Place and after the game Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov rejected the notion he's suffering from a post-Olympics hangover.

In a related story, Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin admitted he IS suffering from a post-Olympics hangover.

---

As stated earlier on the blog, we spent the weekend in tiny Glasgow, Montana (pop. 3000) for the Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball tournament. The Regina Hornets successfully defended their title, winning a fourth straight division championship.

One thing I noticed about America -- the beer's cheap ($1 per), the gas is cheap (2/3's or our pump price) and the roads are terrific. However a family of four has to pay $1200/month for medical insurance.

Therefore I'll take Canada any day. Although apparently thanks to Barack Obama that may change.

---

I won't soon forget a gentleman by the name of Dan Tudor of Lewistown, Montana who we met in the lounge and shared some pops. He was up for his boy's Grade 5 basketball games. He grew up two blocks from Dave Dickenson in Great Falls, Montana but is wife is from Val Marie, Sask. Therefore, his son is a dyed-in-the-wool Riders fan and his room is split between Denver Broncos posters and parapharnelia and Saskatchewan Roughriders swag.

WE WALK AMONG YOU! I told Dan I'd get his family tickets to a Rider game if they ever make their way to the Queen City.

Profuse apologies to the Canadian border guard who I sprayed with windshield wiper fluid while he was scouring our passports. Thank GOD he's a CKRM listener and had a sense of humour.

WHY, WHY, WHY do I do these things??

Roughrider centre Jeremy O'Day is looking for bids on a handful of items at his website www.jeremyoday.com. All proceeds benefit Jesse's Journey and Jeremy's scholarship fund at Edinboro.

Up for bid are autographed photos of Eddie Davis and Omarr Morgan as well as game-worn cleats from Wes Cates and Renauld Williams. The bids close this week!! Please help out Jeremy.

A couple of football notes from football maven John Lynch:

A month ago CFL warhorse Cal Murphy was on life support in a Regina hospital. However on Friday, Murphy was back at his regular table at Boston Pizza South with his regular cohorts which include Lynch, Tom Shepherd and other football luminaries.

However Lynch also reports our friend Alan Ford is on the shelf for a few weeks with a broken collarbone suffered after slipping on the ice on his neighbour's step. Ford was scheduled to attend a Montreal Alouettes' evaluation camp in Phoenix but was forced to miss it with the injury.

Ford also reports his grandson wore a #21 "FORD" jersey to a Rider game, honouring his grandpa, but the kid got chastised by the fans who thought he had "FOORD" spelled wrong. They were referring to popular Rider running back Stu Foord.

NEW YORK -- Former CFL and NFL receiver Rocket Ismail has a new job as a television announcer for bull riding.

Ismail, who began his pro career with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts before heading to the NFL, will serve as a correspondent for some of the Professional Bull Riders telecasts on cable channel Versus. He became interested in the sport when he took part in "Ty Murray's Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge" on CMT.

Ismail will interview riders about their lives outside of competition, and made his debut during Saturday's broadcast from Fresno, Calif.

Tonight on Sportsline we'll take a look at the Dub playoffs, visit with Rider kicker Luca Congi and also Gary Brotzel of the Regina Red Sox.

Lions Sign Former Rider

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced today that import running back Jamal Robertson has signed with the team. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"Jamal is a proven running back in our league and I believe he helps fill a significant need we have at that position," said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono.

Spending the 2008 and 2009 seasons with the Toronto Argonauts, Robertson recorded 326 career carries for 1,676 yards and 15 TD's. He also racked up an additional 753 yards and a TD on 86 receptions.

"I'm very excited to be joining the Lions," said Robertson from his offseason home in Georgia. "They were tough to play against the past two seasons and I'm glad to be going out west to be part of a team that's making some big offseason moves."

Esks acquire DB Lenny Walls

(Edmonton)  The Edmonton Eskimos announce today that they have signed free agent import defensive back Lenny Walls.  Walls started in all 18 games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2009 ending the season with 48 defensive tackles, an East Division leading seven interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown, three pass knockdowns and two forced fumbles.

He also had one fumble recovery returned six yards for a touchdown. The Boston College product entered the CFL in September of 2008 with the Calgary Stampeders starting in the last four regular season games.

He was traded to Winnipeg on May 15, 2009.

Prior to entering the CFL, the California native spent time with the NFL's St. Louis Rams, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs.

In 2007, Walls played in five games (three starts) for the Rams recording eight tackles.

Eskimo General Manager and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia says, "Lenny is a physical player who breaks well on the ball, and he excels at both the boundary half and corner positions. He's an important addition to our defence".

TIGER-CATS LOCK UP MARKEITH KNOWLTON

Hamilton, Ontario- The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has signed import linebacker Markeith Knowlton to a contract extension that will keep the CFL All-Star in Hamilton through the 2012 season.

"We're very excited to have Markeith signed for the foreseeable future.  He's a consistent contributor on the field, a respected teammate in the locker room, and a valuable member of this community," said Head Coach Marcel Bellefeuille.

Knowlton, a 6-0, 205-pound native of Elaine, Arkansas finished the 2009 season with 94 defensive tackles, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, four interceptions, two blocked kicks and two touchdowns.

In recognition of his extraordinary season, Knowlton was named the Ticats Most Outstanding Defensive Player as well as both an East Division and CFL All-Star.

The Winners, And Still Champs!

GLASGOW, MONTANA -- The Regina Hornets won the Grade 8 girls division of the Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament in Glasgow Sunday, beating Hinsdale 36-29. Way to go girls!

Lions round out coaching staff with Rich Stubler

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced this evening that Rich Stubler has been added to the coaching staff. The veteran defensive strategist will look after the team's defensive line.

"Rich brings a significant coaching resume to his position with us and I believe he will be a strong asset to our club," said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono.

For Stubler, this will be his second stint with the Lions after helping lead the club to a Grey Cup championship in 2000 as the team's defensive coordinator.

He was most recently the head coach of the Toronto Argonauts in 2008 as well as the Boatmen's defensive coordinator from 2003 to 2007.

Canada's Jennifer Jones kicked off the women's world curling championship on a high note. The Winnipeg skip rallied from four back to beat Sweden 9-6 in her first match in Swift Current.

---

The 2010 Winter Paralympics ends today with cross-country skiing events before tonight's closing ceremonies. Canada's wheelchair curling team picked up a gold last night, edging South Korea 8-7 after giving up a seven-point lead. Canada has 18 medals so far at the Paralympic Games, including nine gold, five silver and four
bronze.

---

Nine games on the NHL slate today, including one matinee matchup with the Boston Bruins hosting the New York Rangers. Two Canadian teams in action later -- Calgary visits Minnesota and the Edmonton Oilers welcome the slumping San Jose Sharks.

---

In a tournament noted for upsets, Number-1 overall seed Kansas is going home early, victim of a 69-67 beating by little-heralded Northern Iowa yesterday. NCAAA men's basketball continues today with the conclusion of the tournament's second round. Two Number-1 seeds in action -- Syracuse and Duke.

---

Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan will miss the 2010 season because of an elbow injury that will require surgery. Nathan, who leads the major leagues with 246 saves since 2004, made the decision after playing catch with Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson for 10 minutes this morning. The 35-year-old right-hander went 2-and-2 with a 2.10 E-R-A and a career-best 47 saves last season.

---

Jim Furyk has a three-shot lead heading into today's final round of the Transition Championship. He made consecutive birdies on the back nine yesterday to pull away from the pack and finish off a bogey-free round of 4-under 67. Furyk has not won
since the Canadian Open in 2007, a span of 58 tournaments. Canada's Stephen Ames is eight shots back.

Wish You Were Here

GLASGOW, MONTANA -- The WHL playoffs are in full swing but we're down here in the cocoon of Glasgow, Montana for the Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament. Canada is but a rumour down here. Above is a photo of bartender Pam paying out my winnings from the Sagebrush Lounge's "Shake Of The Day" contest today....

And this is one of us striking up the band Friday night!! Photos courtesy Darren Szabo. See you Monday! (Hopefully).

You've Gotta Be Kidding Me

Friday Rodservations

What a huge upset on the opening night of the WHL playoffs! Jeff Bosch made 48 saves as the Moose Jaw Warriors shocked the Hitmen 4-2 in Calgary to open their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Game 2 is tomorrow in Calgary.

Tonight Swift Current opens at Brandon and Kootenay hosts Medicine Hat in a pair of game ones. Tomorrow the Saskatoon Blades open their series with Red Deer at the CUC.

More on the Dub playoffs in a moment...

---

Good golly these weeks are long when you've got nothing going on between Monday and Friday! I hate to tell you but we're headed into the two most excruciating months on the calendar; April and May. Not coincidentally it's between Pats hockey and Roughriders football.

We'll try to keep you entertained in the meantime.

---

The Pats have been done almost a week and I'd prefer to forget about this season and move on to other things, however that's not being allowed. Everywhere I go the Pats are dominating the discussion.

Most of the talk centres around Pats GM Brent Parker and his future with the squad. He admitted this week that being the target of fans' criticism has been painful. Part of that stems from his willingness to read fan comments on blogs like this, and on other message boards.

The simple thing to say is "AVOID THEM!" but I'm sure it's not so easy. I've often said if someone was talking about you, you'd want to know what they're saying.

Truth be told, WHL and CFL coaches and GM types are the most regular readers of these blogs. I learned this week one WHL West Conference coach flips his liptop open as soon as he boards the bus and scours each and every one of the blogs.

Former Stampeders offensive coordinator George Cortez once said this blog is the most-read by CFL assistant coaches. I still don't know why. It's full of bunk!

---

Back to Brent.

My theory on why the Regina media has been easy on him is two-fold; he's a great guy whose heart is in the right place and he's been real good to the Regina media. His accessibility is unmatched.

Mind you, former Rider GM Alan Ford possessed the same qualities but he got roasted in this town. Maybe my theory's out the window.

---

Speaking of Al Ford, he's now a scout for the Montreal Alouettes and a rep for Intergold, the Calgary company which produced our Grey Cup rings. I've got to get ahold of Al about making a replica of mine. I keep waking up in a panic in the middle of the night, having dreamt I lost mine.

---

Again, back to Brent.

Personally I'd like to see Brent Parker start a blog. He's said in the past he'd like to try his hand at journalism or broadcasting and this would be an ideal way to get things off his chest.

It would probably last about a week mind you, but it's worth a shot.

---

This WHL blog network is the best thing to happen to the Dub since twinned highways.

---

I don't expect there to be any shuffling within the Regina Pats organization although the scuttlebut I've heard is that there may be a reshuffling of responsibilities. Also, there may be an edict sent down not to have nearly as many trades. That'll put the onus on the coaching staff to get the most out of what they have, and on scouting to make their picks count.

---

It's tough not to feel bad for Pats forward Jordan Weal who was left out of his own team's year-end awards and the conference All-Star teams. I heard he told someone after our banquet, "I thought I had a shot at scholastic player of the year but I guess not".

You gotta feel for the guy because he was one of them most consistent producers down the stretch. He's had nearly 200 points as a 16- and 17-year old in the league which is mind-boggling. Even without Jordan Eberle at Christmas, Weal posted totals of 3-4-7 in eight games according to my scoresheets.

That tells me two things; 1) he can score without Eberle but 2) the 2009-2010 Regina Pats couldn't win without Eberle. Even WITH him they couldn't win when it counted.

If I could say one thing to the Weals it would be this; your time is coming. And soon. When he's a high pick in this June's NHL Draft in L.A., all the snubs will be forgotten.

---

Ah yes, the Brandon-Swift Current series. Game 1 is at Westman Place in Brandon tonight.

Honestly, truthfully, the only way I can see the Wheat Kings losing a game in this series is if they get lost on their way to the rink.

Games 3 and 4 will be in the Brandt Centre so like it or not, Pats fans have been injected into the equation. Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schaefer has a nice letter in the Leader Post sports section today thanking Regina and the Pats for their hospitality and he lobbied to have Regina hockey fans cheer for the Broncos.

However the father of Wheat Kings centre Brent Raedake, Mike Raedake, wrote me an email this week and is lobbying our fans to get on side with the Wheaties.

"Perhaps Regina and the media could adopt the Brandon Wheat Kings for a couple of months and have a great team to cheer for, for once. There is even a Regina product who stars for them, to add that special interest angle. He may not have the same offensive numbers as Eberle, but he has had a solid career and is considered by many, to be the best defensive forward and most versatile player in the WHL. And oh yah, he will be the only Reginan playing in the Memorial Cup!"

I would suggest this; cheer for whomever you wish, but just go out to the games next week! I'll be at Game 4. The night of Game 3 is the A-Train's birthday and I'm ecstatic to be home for that.

---

It's interesting the Swift Current Broncos have given their broadcaster Jon Keen the feeling that they'd prefer he not blog in the playoffs. That's what I read on his website. Keener admitted there are "smirks" on the faces of Swift Currentans since they're taking over our building.

Just remember the Pats have opened their facilities to the Broncos, I've handed over the keys to the home broadcast booth, Pats staff will operate the games and our season ticket holders weren't given first right at their seats for Games 3 and 4.

Let's keep it fun although I have a feeling things could get interesting between now and then.

Thanks to Blades broadcaster Les Lazaruk and Warriors voice James Gallo for sending me audio for us on CKRM's sportscasts. Thanks fellas!

---

Jordan Eberle is now toiling with the AHL's Springfield Falcons but Edmonton sports writer Dan Barnes writes in today's Edmonton Journal that Eberle should be up with the Oilers.

CJME morning man Dave Arnold asked sportscaster Wray Morrison this week what's the big difference between the WHL and the AHL. Wray was correct when he commented that the AHL is far closer to the NHL in level of play than it is to the WHL. Mind you Eberle had nine points in nine games last year with the Falcons so maybe pro hockey will be easier for him.

"The game gets easier the higher you go," Pats coach Curtis Hunt old CKRM this week when I asked him how Jordan will make out in the pro's.

---

Speaking of CJME, a Rawlco Radio executive called me this week to request a cease and desist on blog warfare. This particular gentleman and I were co-workers on Power 99 FM in Prince Albert about 100 years ago and have remained friends.

He was referring to the anti-Rawlco sentiment in this blog's comments section and anti-Harvard comments on their websites. I told him I had been awaiting his call and would be happy to call a truce. I also said the war was instigated by a snide remark about me by one of their people a few years back on a blog and at that point it WAS ON! He said he was aware of that remark.

But now it's over so any anti-Rawlco comments won't be published.

A great blog to check out is Chuck Gormley's over at http://www.versus.com/. For some reason the NHL's American cable-carrier started following me on Twitter so I returned the favour and it turns out Gormley has some fantastic insights.

From Rider coach Ken Miller on Twitter this week:

From: @Coach_KenMiller
"Congratulations to offensive lineman Kelly Bates and his girlfriend Nadine on the birth of their baby girl Nyah."

---

Also from Twitter:

@steviebaggs90
"Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue ... Proverbs challenge chap 17"

Stevie Baggs isn't just a linebacker for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals but he's also a starting defensive end on the God Squad. That bible scripture may be true, but not in the case of bloggers and broadcasters. I'm thought a fool if I DO keep silent.

Things were much more interesting when I was breaking Rider stories but I've ceased. I'd rather have you mad at me than the Riders!

---

An American football blogger thinks Florida quarterback Tim Tebow should try his hand at the CFL since he's pegged to be a late-round pick in the NFL Draft. The blogger cites former CFL quarterbacks who've gone on to big things in the NFL such as Warren Moon, Doug Fluties, Joe Theismann, Jeff Garcia, Joe Kapp, Erik Kramer, Joe Piscarik and Sean Salisbury.

---

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell flipped a coin last week to see who would play first in the new New York Stadium; the Jets or the Giants. The Giants won the toss.

It seems like everybody's getting a new stadium but us. Where did the stadium talk go? It seems that when Premier Brad Wall announced he'd prefer Ottawa pay for a third of our facility, it was like hitting a dry patch on the ski hill.

---

I was dismayed to see Nealon Greene and Andrew Greene were shutout on TSN's Top 10 "Green" things on their St. Patrick's Day Sportscentre. Making the list were Ahman Green, the Green Monster and things/people of that nature. What about the Riders??

---

Have you ever checked out the website http://www.textsfromlastnight.com/? I would suggest you DO NOT check it out if you're offended easily. But here's one text which caught my eye:

- (707): the guy who filmed erin andrews naked got 27 months in jail. Every man that's seen it should send him cigs and a nail file baked in a cake. We owe it to him.

Inappropriate? Definitely.

The kids in my house think it's weird that I watch Hannah Montana when I'm home alone or in a hotel on the road. I don't think it's weird. You can only watch so much sports.

---

Caught The Blindside last night. It's a must-see and is currently playing at Rainbow Cinemas.

---

The Senior Provincial A final is set. Jamie Heward and the Balgonie Bisons host the St. Walburg Eagles in game 1 of the Best-of-3 tomorrow night at 7:00. There will be beer gardens during warmups and intermissions. Cost is $8 for adults and 12 & under are free.

---

Come on over to Moose Jaw next Thursday as the Moose Jaw Elks Lodge No. 7 is holding a roast for Scott Schultz. The roasters include the Riders' Neal Hughes, Mike McCullough and me. George Reed will be in attendance as well. It's at the Heritage Inn with cocktails at 6:00 and the roasting begins at 7:00.

---

The family of Corey Haim has requested the City of Toronto pay for his funeral. Haim of course was an 80s movie star who died of a drug overdose last week at age 38. I love Corey Haim and all but I think their request is a little over-the-top.

Is there anything more painful than being stuck in line at a 7/11 or gas station behind Martha while she checks her lottery tickets and redeems her winnings on new ones?

George Strait is hosting a free online poker tournament hosted by Full Tilt Poker tomorrow night. All the details are at http://www.georgestraitpoker.blogspot.com/ and there's a link on the left. You don't care, but it makes me feel good to help out Georgie.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! I'm headed to the States for the weekend to catch some hoops so if you have blog comments to send, get 'em in now as I won't have data service once we hit the border. I've not even sure if there will be a Monday Morning Goalie.

Later skater!
