Riders To Sign Armstead

Rider coach Ken Miller announced after Monday's practice that CFL journeyman WR/KOR/PR Jason Armstead is on his way into Regina and pending a physical, will suit up for the team in the Labour Day Classic on Sunday.

Yes, you read that right.

Also, slotback Andy Fantuz was back on the practice field for the first time in a month as he has recovered from a hamstring pull which has caused him to miss four games.

The Monday Morning Goalie

It's finally here!

The week of Labour Day Classic XLIII!
Ever since Winnipeg Blue Bomber coach Mike Kelly called Saskatchewan "the crotch of Canada" just before training camps, I couldn't wait to see what the reaction of Rider fans would be at the L.D.C.

Now, we only have to wait six more days! The 4-4 Roughriders line up against the 3-5 Blue Bombers this Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at Mosaic Stadium and the game was sold out before the tickets were even printed.

Honestly, I was with many Rider fans who thought the Bombers' slow start (and the coach's quirky behaviour) would cost Kelly his job and he may not have even made it to Labour Day. Although CJOB Radio Winnipeg's Geoff Currier assured me Kelly would in fact be on the eastside sidelines, for two reasons:

1) He has a multi-year contract and the Bombers can't afford to fire him, and ...
2) He's buddies with Bomber President Lyle Bauer, who's giving him a long leash.

So, let's turn it loose on Sunday! If you have tickets over there, let me know some of the beaks you have for the Bomber coach down below in the comments section!

----

The other tremendous thing about Labour Day Classic weekend is that it's like a mini-Grey Cup atmosphere. Fans from both teams start pouring into Regina Friday afternoon and it's a weekend-long party that lasts until Monday.

I remember last year, I got reports that a Bomber fan was weaving in and out of cars (while walking) at the corner of Victoria Ave and Broad St offering drivers a sip of his beer for 25 cents!
The hotels, bars and restaurants are packed and it's like a huge Saskatchewan homecoming for Rider fans and the ultimate road trip for Bomber fans.

In honour of this, what say we paint the town GREEN for the week? What I mean is, adorn your business in Rider Green & White and send the photos to me at sportsline@harvardbroadcasting.com. It'll be free advertising for your business, appearing here on the blog.

Here are some examples of what I'm talking about:

The Rider display in the Molson/Coors Light sales office in Regina....

Brent Kaminski's Southland Mall Safeway.....

Let's get 'er done!

----

There is an update on the contract talks between the Riders and Andy Fantuz and Reggie Hunt in a Sunday post (scroll down).

It appears Fantuz has given no indication which way he's leaning towards (signing the extension here or waiting for free agency).

What will be your reaction if he signs elsewhere?

It seems to be just a matter of time. Sounds like a good topic for Sportsline tonight.

----

B.C. Lions boss Wally Buono says he is "angered" and "embarrassed" by the actions of some of his players prior to their last game. It was against the Bombers a week ago Friday night at B.C. Place. The Vancouver Province's Llowell Ulrich wrote about it Sunday. Llowell is originally from Young, SK.

The story surfaced when Bomber DT Doug Brown wrote about it in his Winnipeg Free Press column.

"We were issued what is commonly seen as the finishing-move salute by some wrestlers formerly known as De-generation X," Brown wrote. "What this consisted of was a large number of Lions players raising their arms simultaneously in a judo chop-like pose and with great group precision, bringing them quickly down in a V-shape manner ending and pointing at their groin region.

"It's essentially how you moon somebody from the front and it is intended to show great disrespect and disdain for your opponent."

This went down prior to the opening kickoff that night.

Lions players were told not to comment on the incident after practice Saturday.

"We're talking and dealing with it as a team," said Angus Reid, who was designated by the club to speak on behalf of the players.

Buono, however, did not hold back.

"This is not a conduct that is becoming of anybody, never mind a professional athlete," he said. "The damage that it does to our fans and anybody that is involved with the game has been discussed. It was misguided leadership that shows irresponsibility and lack of common sense."
Buono said no disciplinary club action would be taken, though it remains to be seen if the league will act in a similar manner.

----

Congrats to the Regina Thunder. They upped their PFC record to 3-1 with a 38-7 thrashing of the Edmonton Huskies Sunday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.

It would be great to see some junior playoff football at M.S. this fall.

----

The Regina Pats were winless in three games at the Edmonton WHL preseason tourney including Sunday's 8-7 shootout loss to Swift Current. All the recaps are in the posts below.

I wasn't on the trip, but I'll post the Pats brass's reaction shortly.

It's too early to be concerned about three straight losses, especially in the preseason. But you know they would've liked to have won at least one.

----

For Twitter enthusiasts, you'll enjoy the tweets from Chad Ocho Cino (the Bengals receiver) at:
http://twitter.com/OGOchoCinco

He promises to be the ultimate NFL Insider, beating Chris Mortenson and Adam Shefter of ESPN to the punch. He's already broken a story about Tom Brady's injured shoulder.

Should be interesting to watch!

----

Can I forfeit my CFL picks for the rest of the year? What a joke!

The Ticats led for 50 minutes only to blow it in Edmonton Saturday night in the last minute. Crazy! I needed that one.

And how can you have any faith in the Argos anymore? Remember rookie coach Bart Andrus had a big mess to clean up when he tookover, unlike Marc Trestman in Montreal who walked into a great situation.

However the Argos have already completely overhauled their offensive scheme once, and they don't appear to be getting any better.

It should be panic time in Toronto; they've lost 10 straight at home and have forgotten how to win.

----

Last week's coverage of Canada's mens Olympic hockey team camp in Calgary was fascinating. The Olympics in Vancouver are certainly going to be an exciting time.

It got me to-wondering: Will the Detroit Red Wings suffer this year because their coach Mike Babcock is pre-occupied with his Team Canada duties for the Olympics?

I bet they do.

Kevin Lowe said since Babcock was hired as head coach of Team Canada, it's been like the Stanley Cup Playoffs for him every day since, in terms of dealing with the monstrous pressure and mammoth expectations from Canada.

It would be human nature to lose focus on your club team.

----

We found out the reason for the Hamilton TigerCat-Edmonton Eskimo game at Commonwealth Stadium being moved from Thursday to Sunday last week.

The answer: AC/DC.

Man those guys have power!

Speaking of, check out this cool panoramic 360 look at Mosaic Stadium from the concert, and see if you can pick out my brother leaning on the stage:
http://www.leaderpost.com/panoramas/acdcregina_082509/index.html

One thing about those old rockers like AC/DC and the Rolling Stones; they always start their concerts on time, which I appreciate. Obviously, they need to get to bed early. Didn't Flo-Rida make fans wait TWO HOURS when he was here in the spring?

----

One more reason to look forward to the upcoming Regina Pats season....

Wireless internet on the bus!! That will make those eight, sixteen and twenty hour marathon road trips go by a little quicker.

Seriously though, I'm getting pretty keyed up for the 2009-2010 campaign.

----

The Brandon Wheat Kings will host the Memorial Cup tournament this spring, and prognosticators are already handing the Wheaties the East Division pennant, if not the Conference flag too.

Hey why not? They're loaded. But I think the Pats will be on their heels.

Hotshot Pats sophomore Jordan Weal said in an interview this week they have automatic respect for coach Curtis Hunt because he coached in the NHL.

There's no question the return of Hunt has had a calming influence on his charges.

Let's see if it translates to the ice....

Their season opens September 18 at Saskatoon, the same night as the Riders Plaza of Honour Dinner.

----

Sheesh -- we're getting old. 16-year-old forward John Odgers, 5-11 and 178 pounds, is in camp with the WHL's Prince George Cougars.

John is the son of former NHL tough guy Jeff Odgers, who also happens to be a member of the Cougars' scouting staff.

Odgey was a veteran in camp with Brandon when I had a sip of coffee with the Wheat Kings as a 16-year old goaltender twenty years ago.

Man time flies. And I'll NEVER forget the dressing room tricks Odgey could do with a skate-lace.

----

Thanks to the owners/managers of Habano's for having me in to judge the first round of the Malibu Rum Best Regina Beach Bod contest Thursday night.

For some reason, the competition was barely advertised however we still ended up with a decent crowd.

Let's pack it this Thursday night for the FINALS! The winner gets $1,000 plus a prize package from Habano's and lots of good stuff.

I chose this nice young lady to win. I'm not sure who the guy is:

----

Sooooo, Swift Current is overrun by a rat infestation?

Nope. Too easy.

----

Sure enough, just as I say the blog fad is dying, three new blogs spring up. Check 'em out:

Our friend Ernie Waldner in Swift Current blogs about the Broncos and Legionnaires at http://www.erniewaldner.com/.

Pats goalie coach Ryan Cyr has a blog for his goaltending consultant company at http://www.gdiprairies.blogspot.com/.

And my friend Chris Pollock has started a new blog as well. I lost the link but perhaps Chris can post the link in the comments section.

----

ESPN has hit a home-run with former Tampa and Oakland coach John Gruden on their Monday Night Football telecasts.

He's EXACTLY what was needed on those broadcasts, and Chucky could end up as the next John Madden if he wants to.

He's not as high-energy, but his analysis is superb.

I wouldnt be surprised though, if Gruden would rather be on the sidelines and will likely jump at the next coaching opportunity.

----

The start of the NFL season sure is exciting.

I've been to just one NFL game, and it was back in 1995 when Pats GM Brent Parker bought the whole team tickets to watch the New York Jets and the Seattle Seahawks in the old Kingdome.

Boomer Esiason was the Jets QB, but I can't remember who was calling signals for the Seahawks. If I'm not mistaken, former Rider Andrew Greene was on the Seahawks roster for that one.

The Pats players and I spent much of the game running around the Kingdome trying to see as much of the stadium as we could. That group included Rhett Gordon, Chad Mercier, Dion Zukiwsky and Ross Parsons.

Have you ever been to an NFL game? Let's hear your stories in the comments section...

----

Former Rider WR Matt Dominguez is on the payroll of CTV Regina, working as an analyst. His insights are tremendous, but he's dying to get back on the football field.

In the meantime, he's volunteering as the offensive coordinator of the RIFL's Riffel Royals. Matt says his offence is SO smooth that they've even need to HUDDLE this season.

I'll have to get out to watch some of their games to see if this is in fact the case.

----

Jessica Simpson has put a hex on Tony Romo for dumping her a day shy of her 29th birthday.

And people can't figure out why he dumped her. That family appears to be crazy.

----

George Strait's new album Twang is #1 on CMT's chart of country albums.

I picked it up as soon as I saw it on sale in HMV but I must admit, and it pains me to say it, it's not his greatest effort.

Maybe I jinxed him when we met at Craven!

That first song, Twang, is pretty good though. But that's about it...

----

I have a new favourite Blizzard from DQ. It's likely not new, but I tried one of the kids' Reese's peanut butter cup Blizzard. IT'S OUT OF THIS WORLD!

What's your favourite? I've been reluctant to sway from the Oreo or Crispy Crunch ever since the Blizzard debuted 20 years ago.

We were all amazed at the south Albert DQ when the girl behind the counter turned it over and it never fell out. Amazing!

Has anyone ever seen a Blizzard slide out when turned upside down and shaken?

I've never seen it.

Okay that's it for today on the MMG.

HAVE A GREEN WEEK!

Broncos 8 Pats 7 SO

The Regina Pats went winless at the Edmonton Oil Kings Preseason WHL Tournament in Sherwood Park, AB, falling to their rivals from Swift Current in a shootout Sunday afternoon.

Here's the recap courtesy Edmonton Oil Kings P.R. staff:

The Broncos scored first on a breakaway. Mike Brown went upstairs on Regina goaltender Derek Tendler. It didn't take Swift Current long to strike again. Andy Blanke drove the net, Jordan Peddle tipped in his centering pass, and it was 2–0.

Regina came back to score less than a minute after that. Michal Poletin beat Bronco goalie Chad Ketting to make it 2–1. The Pats tied it up at 2 before the halfway point of the frame. Jordan Weal went in alone, deked and stuck the backhand under the bar. The Broncos' Brown got another break away and was hooked going in. He got a penalty shot, elected to shoot, but Tendler made a pad save to keep the score 2–2.

Period two started with five goals in just over seven minutes. Swift Current got goals from Jordan Evans, Peddle with his second of the game, and Eric Doyle. Regina replied with markers from Tomas Hricina and Andrew Rieder. Add it all up, and the Broncos were up 5 – 4. Things settld down, until the Pats took back to back penalties. The Broncos Justin Dowling had a shot go off a defenseman, and in, to make it 6–4. Regina got it back to within one as Poletin fed Graham Hood in the slot for the quick one timer. The period ended 6–5 Swift Current.

The Broncos got the two goal lead back in the third when Dane Muench found Dillon Wagner alone in the slot. He whipped one past Regina's second goalie, Dawson Guhle. The Pats got back within one on a blast from the high slot from Matt Strueby, and it was 7-6. Regina pulled even when Poletin scored his second of the game with just over two minutes to play. The third period ended with the score tied seven all, and so did overtime. On they went to a shootout.

Swift Current goalie Alexandre Sirard was the hero stopping 2 of 3 Pat shooters. The Broncos win 8–7, after a 2–1 win in the shootout

Fantuz, Hunt Update

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are just days away from returning to the football field for their first practice since this current bye week. However lots has been going on behind the scenes.

G.M. Eric Tillman apparently had a very good meeting with free agent LB Reggie Hunt, and he has given the coaches a "thumbs up" from his perspective, with regards to his signing.

It's now appears to be a coaches decision. . From what I'm hearing, the coaches have been very happy with the play of Tad Kornegay the past couple of games, and they also seem to be real happy with the McCullough-Freeman combo in the middle. That would seem to mean they see Hunt as a role player, not a full time starter.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the feeling I'm getting. . So, maybe that's why the coaches' meeting with Hunt is so important.  . Both sides need to be comfortable with what appears to be a different role for the Reaper if he comes back.   The coaches have taken some time off during the bye week, but that meeting will take place, with a decision probably being made one way or the other, before the team returns to the practice field next week.

Regarding star slotback Andy Fantuz, who's missed the past four games with a hamstring injury and is poised to become a free agent at season's end, the Riders are continuing to play wait-and-see.

The offer's been made, and Fantuz continues to mull it over with his agents and perhaps his family as well. From what I can gather, money won't be a factor.

What Andy's grappling with is the strong pull to re-sign with the Riders, whom he loves, and the allure of heading home to southern Ontario near friends and family. He's got to know full well either the Argos, Ticats, or both will back up the Brink's truck come free agent season.

As it stands, the Riders have no idea which way he's leaning but they've been trying to avoid making this a pressure decision.

Sunday Sports

- Noel Prefontaine made a 48-yard field goal in the final minute to give the Edmonton Eskimos their only lead of the game in a 31-30 win over Hamilton. Running back Arkee Whitlock scored three touchdowns for the Eskimos. Arland Bruce caught two scoring passes for the Tiger-Cats in the first quarter. The Eskimos take over sole possession of first place in the CFL West at 5-3 while the Ticats have dropped back-to-back games to fall to 4-4.

The Roughriders return to the practice field at 11:00am Monday following their bye week. They host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Labour Day Classic XLIII a week from today at 2:00pm.

- He was one of the greatest quarterbacks to play in the CFL. Sam Etcheverry has died at 79 following a lengthy battle with cancer. Nicknamed the Rifle, Etcheverry played most of his career with Montreal, and was one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the league during the 1950's.

----

- Ben Roethlisberger looks like he's ready for the start of the N-F-L regular season in two weeks. Roethlisberger led two scoring drives while going 15 of 19 for 168 yards before sitting out the second half in Pittsburgh's 17-0 win over Buffalo.

- Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel suffered a sprained knee after being sacked on the third play of the Chiefs' 14-10 loss to Seattle. Cassel signed a long-term contract after Kansas City acquired him in the off-season from New England.

- ARLINGTON, Texas - Felix Jones got the Dallas Cowboys away from their goal line and, 13 plays later, into the opposing end zone. Marion Barber did most of the hard work in between.

No wonder the Cowboys are so excited about their 1-2 punch in the backfield.

Dallas rode Jones and Barber for most of a 94-yard touchdown drive, the highlight series during the first-half battle between the first-team units in a pre-season game against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night. The 49ers won the battle of the backups in the second half, winning 20-13 on a nine-yard touchdown run by Kory
Sheets with 33 seconds left.

The Cowboys (1-2) outplayed the 49ers (3-0) when the starters were in, with Tony Romo getting the offence into scoring position on three of four drives, but led only 10-3 at halftime.

- There's just one game on tonight's NFL exhibition schedule, but it should contain plenty of drama. The Denver Broncos entertain Chicago in Bears quarterback Jay Cutler's return to Colorado. Cutler was dealt to the Bears in the off-season after feuding with Broncos G-M Josh McDaniels.

----

- The PFC's Regina Thunder host the Edmonton Huskies this afternoon at Mosaic Stadium.

----

- The Regina Pats look for their first win of the preseason this afternoon in Edmonton when they face the Swift Current Broncos at 3:00pm at the Edmonton Oil Kings preseason tournament. The Pats lost 4-0 to Edmonton Friday, and 4-3 to Medicine Hat on Saturday.

----

- The Boston Red Sox edged Toronto 3-2 to maintain their two-and-a-half game lead over Texas in the A-L wild-card chase. Clay Buchholz allowed a run on three singles, while striking out nine Blue Jays over 8 1/3 innings. Roy Halladay looks to play the role of slump-buster today as he leads the Toronto Blue Jays into the finale of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Elsewhere, Scott Feldman won his 14th as the Rangers blanked Minnesota 3-0.

- San Francisco is within a game of Colorado for the National League wild card after beating the Rockies 5-3. Cliff Lee lost for the first time in six starts since coming over to Philadelphia, as the Phillies were bombed 9-1 by Atlanta in a game called by rain in the eighth inning.

----

- The opening playoff event on the P-G-A Tour playoffs finds Paul Goydos and Steve Marino as the co-leaders going into the final round of The Barclays. Rookie Webb Simpson and Fredrik Jacobson are two back, while Tiger Woods is five shots off the pace.

Tigers 4 Pats 3

ST. ALBERT, AB: Game 3 of the Oil Kings Pre-season Invitational Tournament featured the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Regina Pats Saturday afternoon.

Both teams were coming off opening day losses and looking to rebound. The Pats were shut out 4-0 by the Oil Kings, while the Tigers fell 5–2 at the hands of the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Pats scored first on the power play in the opening period. Tomas Hricina's point shot finds its way through a screen and past Tiger goalie Tyler Bunz. The first ends 1-0 with the shots on goal even at eight.

The second period begins with a scrap, as Thomas Carr of the Tigers, and Regina's Matt Delahey go toe to toe. Still in the first minute, the Tigers take an additional penalty, and the Pats capitalize with the man advantage. Alex Pym walks in from the point and goes top corner on Bunz to make it 2-0. The Tigers get on the board late in the frame as Emerson Etem set up Kale Kessey for a one timer, and it was 2-1 Pats.

Regina got it back in less than a minute later, when Michal Poletin scored to make it 3 – 1. The gates were open; the Tigers Emerson Etem then scored on the powerplay and the period ended 3 – 2 for the Pats.

The Tigers tied it up early in the third. After a great break out, Mike Forsyth ended up tapping in a feed from Curtis Valk, beating Regina goalie Linden Rowat to make it 3-3.

In the scrum after the goal, Regina took a penalty, and the Tigers were quick to capitalize. Etem scored his second of the game to make it 4-3 for the Hat, and that is your final.

Oil Kings 4 Pats 0

St. Albert, AB: The Edmonton Oil Kings 3rd Annual Pre-season Invitational Tournament is underway at Servus Credit Union Place in St. Albert. The hosts were up against the Regina Pats Friday night.

The Oil Kings failed to convert on four power plays in a tight checking first period. The team's best chance came late in the period while a man up. Robin Soudek set up Clayton Cumiskey on the door step but he failed to convert. At the other end, Oil King goalie Cam Lanigan was solid stopping Graham Hood on a breakaway. Late in the frame he robbed Matt Strueby in close. The first period ended scoreless.

One of the Oil Kings' young guns opened the scoring in the second. Keegan Lowe's point shot found its way past Regina goalie Damien Ketlo to make it 1 – 0. The Oil Kings made it 2 – 0 on the power play after a wild goal mouth scramble. TJ Foster had a couple whacks at it before Michael St. Croix finally stuck it in.

"I thought Foster and St. Croix had some good chemistry tonight," said Edmonton head coach Steve Pleau. "Both guys are smart hockey players. They make good reads and move the puck around well."

Rookie G Derek Tendler spelled off Ketlo in the Pats goal midway through the second period.

Regina started the third period with a brief two man advantage but the Oil Kings penalty kill held tight. Four minutes into the third, Lanigan robbed Hood again on a set up at the top of the crease.

Midway through the period, the Pats had another power play chance. Tomas Hricina tipped a point shot but Lanigan was able to get a pad on it.

Edmonton put it away on a power play goal by Garrett Thiessen and an even strength marker by Robin Soudek.

The night belonged to Lanigan who back stopped the team to a 4 – 0 win. The Oil Kings tender made 25 stops for the shut out.

"Lanigan was our best player tonight," says Pleau. "He settled down after training camp and made some great saves."

The Oil Kings Invitational continues Saturday, with three games on the schedule. The Regina Pats and Medicine Hat Tigers play at 11:00 am. The Red Deer Rebels play their only tournament game at 3:00 pm against the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Edmonton Oil Kings return to the ice at 7:00 pm against the Swift Current Broncos.

Rookie G Dawson Guhle starts in goal for the Pats against the Tigers.

The tournament continues Sunday with Regina and Swift Current playing at 3:00 pm. The weekend concludes when the Oil Kings face Medicine Hat at 7:00 pm.

SJHL Hall of Famers

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce the creation of the SJHL Hall Of Fame and Wall Of Honor.

This year's inaugural inductees include:

Ron Hextall (Melville Millionaires) -  Hextall used the Millionaire program as the initial stepping stone toward his glorious career in the National Hockey League, predominately spent with the Philadelphia Flyers.  He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as a rookie in 1987 for being the NHL's MVP during the playoffs.  He also was the first ever netminder to shoot and score a goal at the NHL level, something he also accomplished in the playoffs.  He's currently the Assistant General Manager for the Los Angeles Kings.

Chris Chelios (Moose Jaw Canucks) -  Chelios spent three years in the SJHL and parlayed his Junior 'A' career into an NCAA scholarship before landing on the scene with the Montreal Canadiens in 1985, getting named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.  He has won three Norris Trophies for being the NHL's top defenseman.  The 25-year NHL veteran is hoping to begin his 26th season this October.

Wayne Kartusch (SJHL President) -  Kartusch spent 26-years as President of the SJHL, resigning his post in 2003.  He has received numerous accolades and honors for hard work and dedication to the sport of the game.  He has been bestowed a lifetime membership to the SHA as well as the Canadian Junior Hockey League.  He's also been named Hockey Canada's Volunteer Of The Year.  He was enshrined in Saskatchewan's Sports Hall Of Fame in 2007.

Ron Rumball (Weyburn Red Wings) -  Rumball has provided the Red Wings with forty years of service, holding roles on the Board of Directors, Director Of Scouting, Assistant Coach, Interim Head Coach, and General Manager.  A retired school teacher, Rumball continues to seek out talent for the Wings, who have a storied history as one of the SJHL's most storied franchises.  His most recent major accomplishment was serving as GM for the 2005 RBC Cup champions.

Dwight McMillan (Weyburn Red Wings) - McMillan has won over a thousand regular season games in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, putting him in an extremely elite class with Scotty Bowman (NHL) and Brian Kilrea (OHL).  His tenure as a player and/or coach has spanned five decades with Weyburn and he wielded some magic in 2005 by taking a fifth place team and leading them to an RBC Cup (national championship).  McMillan has ties back to the Red Wings as far back as 1961 when he appeared as a rookie on the very first Red Wing club ever.

The SJHL is extremely proud and pleased to announce the creation of the virtual Hall Of Fame and Wall Of Honor as well as to recognize these five very special individuals for being the first ever inductees.

Thursday Blogging

Some local odds & ends entering another hot Thursday around here, and the first day of school for Regina kids. Hope you had a great summer!:

----

If you get a chance to turn on a television this morning, check out TSN's Sportscentre replay from last night.

Darren Dutchyshyn and Jennifer Hedger are broadcasting live from Watrous, SK as part of the Kraft 10 In 10 Celebration Tour. Dutchy actually does a polka with one of the locals.

It's pretty good viewing and there's lots of Rider Pride evident in Watrous..

----

Rider linebackers coach Alex Smith was on CKRM's Coaches Show last night live from the Press Box Sports Bar. He did a tremendous impression of a matador, avoiding Joe Hadesbeck's question about the Rider special teams. Here's how it went:

HADESBECK: Coach I know it's not your role anymore, but I would imagine new special teams coach Kavis Reed would consult with you a little bit and if he does, do we need a specific returner? Do we need these guys to play together a little bit more? In your estimation from doing it forever, what could possibly help to make your special teams better?

ALEX: Well you know those are all questions for Kavis Reed and not for me. I mean, he's doing his job and I really don't get involved in it because I wanted to get out of it. That's my role -- to stay out of it!

----

Alex was also asked about the rumour that free agent linebacker Reggie Hunt is poised to sign with the Green & White:

ALEX: I don't know how much validity is there. I was out with some friends today and they were asking me the same question. Basically it's all rumour right now unless I'm approached by Eric Tillman or Joe Womack and they ask me.

It's strictly rumour. I don't know if they've talked to him, maybe they have. I haven't been around the office the past few days. But we've got starters in the linebacking corps (Kornegay, McCullough and Lucas) so Reggie would have to come in and be a linebacker at this point in time.

Hunt and Rider GM Eric Tillman were scheduled to meet this past weekend and Matt Dominguez told us on In The Huddle this week that they are at the "Talk To My Agent Stage" which I assume means they're close to a deal.

Messages to The Reaper haven't been returned.

The Team Canada Mens Olympic Team orientation camp wraps up tonight in Calgary with the Red & White scrimmage.

I'm still trying to figure out if the scrimmage will be televised on TSN tonight.

Team Canada has five goalies in camp; Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Steve Mason, Cam Ward and Marc-Andre Fleury.

They're saying Brodeur and Luongo are the front-runners and they'll keep a third around just in case. Personally, I'd like to see Brodeur left off the list after his folderoo in the playoffs with New Jersey last year.

My picks? Luongo, Fleury and Mason.

Luongo and Fleury are the best of the bunch and then let Mason tag along to get the experience because Canada's goalie of the future.

The Regina Pats will play their first preseason game of the year Friday night against the Oil Kings in Edmonton as part of that massive exhibition tournament.

Pats star and Oilers prospect Jordan Eberle WILL be on the trip, and will play Friday night against the Oil Kings.

----

Regina's Mike Sillinger announced his retirement from the NHL after 17 seasons on Wednesday. The front cover of the Leader Post sports section is dedicated to Silly today. Columnist Rob Vanstone reports Sillinger and family will stay put in Regina and experience a Saskatchewan winter for the first time since the early 1990s.

Want to reconsider that Mike? Sheesh if I didn't HAVE to endure -50 temperatures for two solid months, I wouldn't.

Still, Mike is the talk of the NHL today. Driving into work, the NHL Channel on XM Satellite Radio was all over Sillinger's retirement.

Their trivia question was; of the 12 teams Mike Sillinger played for, for whom did he play the most games?

Do you know the answer? I looked it up and it would surprise you.

Unless you want to be severely disturbed for two hours, don't rent the movie The Last House On The Left.

We watched it last night.

New York Islanders forward Mike Sillinger is calling it a

Hey Rod, thought I would send this picture along from our wedding in Mexico. My wife was great about getting a picture taken in our Roughrider shirts. Even though she's a B.C. girl she's joined the Rider nation. If we could only get my father-in-law to get off the Lions bandwagon.

DOMINGUEZ ON IN THE HUDDLE

Free agent wide receiver Matt Dominguez was our featured guest on Access 7's In The Huddle Tuesday night.

Some notes:

- His surgically repaired knees are at 100% strength and he's ready to return to the field.

- He DIDN'T sign the offer from Winnipeg because their intention was to put him on the practice roster.

- He is currently the offensive coordinator with the RIFL's Riffel Royals and has been seriously been bitten by the coaching bug. But he won't coach pro football at this time for two reasons: 1) he still wants to play and 2) he doesn't want to take the time away from his young family.

- Matt's 14-year old nephew Tory is living with him and enrolled at Riffel. He's a junior American Olympian trackster who plays running back. Uncle Matt wonders what it'll take for Tory to be considered a non-import by CFL rules.

- For more, tune into the In The Huddle replay Thursday night at 7:00 on Access!

Hulak Headed to Oil Country

Saskatoon Blades left winger Derek Hulak has earned an invitation to rookie camp for the Edmonton Oilers.

Hulak, a native of Saskatoon, is the 11th player from the past season's edition of the Blades to have garnered an invite from a National Hockey League team.

The Blades captain, Hulak was the team's leading scorer during the 2008-09 season with 30 goals and 46 assists for 76 points in 72 games played while adding 50 penalty minutes.

In 7 playoff games, the former Saskatoon Contact had 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points to go along with 4 penalty minutes.

The Blades acquired Hulak from the Regina Pats along with a 4th round Bantam Draft pick in 2008 in exchange for forward Michael MacAngus, a 3rd round Bantam Draft pick in 2008, and a 5th round Bantam Draft pick in 2008 on January 10th, 2007.

Hulak will be joined at the Oilers camp by his linemates during the 2008-09 season center Milan Kytnar, who recently signed with the Oilers after being a 5th round draft pick of the Oilers in 2007, and right winger Burke Gallimore, who earned an invite last week

CFL Power Rankings

Winnipeg Free Press
Byline: Gary Lawless

Power rankings

One man's totally subjective rankings of the eight CFL teams after Week 5 of the season (last week's rank in parenthesis):

1. (1) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (7-1) -- Another week, another win. No one has shown they can hang with the Als to date.

2. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (4-4) -- The Alouettes proved too much for the Riders but this team can beat anyone else in the league at any time.

3. (2) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (4-3) -- The week off should help this bruised and battered group.

4. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (4-3) -- The Tabbies are the surprise in the East and have a big game with the Eskimos this weekend.

5. (5) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (3-4) -- Inconsistent, but they'll have fun with the Argos this week.

6. (6) B.C. LIONS (3-5) -- Problems on both sides of the ball.

7. (8) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-5) -- Ground attack was enough to beat the Lions but they're still one-dimensional on offence.

8. (7) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (2-5) -- We'll see if the week off helped or hurt the Boatmen.

MOOSE JAW, SK -- The Moose Jaw Warriors in partnership with McDonalds officially opened the Warriors/McDonalds Room in the Pediatrics Ward of the Moose Jaw Union Hospital today. Warriors’ players, staff and board members were on hand for the grand opening.

The Warriors Room was made possible by the “One Step at a Time” promotion put on by McDonalds last season. For every Big Mac sold on a Warriors home game, McDonalds donated one dollar to help renovate the room. With construction beginning in June, the room underwent complete renovations for the past 3 months.

New flooring was installed to resemble a hockey arena. Rink boards surround the room with brightly colored walls adding to the hockey rink theme. A giant wall mural was created containing a cheering crowd that doubles as an eye-spy game. The Warriors logo has been placed prominently on the windows. A coat rack and framed pictures, both made of hockey sticks, constructed and donated by Jason Moran complete the room.

At the Grand Opening, another announcement was made on behalf of the Warriors Alumni Association. Warriors Alumni Kent Hayes and Mike Keane donated $2,500 to the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Pediatrics Ward. Former Warrior Derek Kletzel was on hand to make the presentation. The donation will allow the Hospital Foundation to take one more step to improve the Pediatrics Ward.

A big thank you goes to McDonalds Owner/Operator Doug Douley, Moose Jaw Union Hospital Maintenance Staff and Kelly McEllree of the Moose Jaw Hospital Foundation for making the room a reality.

The Day After AC/DC /// Hunt Speaks To Pats Fans

Over 44,000 people were thrilled by AC/DC's performance at Mosaic Stadium Tuesday night. Here are some notes that come to mind the morning after:

- First and foremost, thanks to Molson/Coors Light for having me as a guest for the show!

- My ears went from ringing when I went to bed to outright pain this morning. I hope yours aren't so bad!

- Former Regina Pats player and coach Mike Blaisdell told me before the show at the Cathedral Village Free House that AC/DC would blow away the Rolling Stones show from a few years ago. I scoffed at first, but whaddya know ...... Blazer was right. It was quite a performance.

- If you were there, please leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

- It struck me that many people in the crowd looked JUST like the people in the band. I'm just sayin' this is an AC/DC type of town.

- One thing I don't get; people who yell, "LET'S GET AS HAMMERED AND STONED AS WE POSSIBLY CAN, THEN GO TO THE CONCERT!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

Why would you do that, and not remember the show? Please tell me why?

I saw people my age stumbling around the ramps long before the concert and they had this glazed look in their eyes and didn't even know where they were.

Not to mention, I saw lots of punks getting arrested outside the stadium on Piffles Taylor Way BEFORE the show even started. WTH? WHY?

- I'm being too negative. I mentioned yesterday in the Monday Morning Goalie that I'm not AC/DC's hugest fan but it's not that I don't like their music. I mean c'mon, being a child of the 80s how could I not be familiar with their tunes? All those songs bring back memories of our midget hockey team's dressing room, and all the house parties with these guys blaring out the living room stereos. AC/DC was king back then and still is for lots of people around here.

- My favourite song by them is Hells Bells and it was pretty great when they led up to it last night. They dangled a gigantic bell from the ceiling of the stage -- probably the size of a small grainery -- and lead singer Brian Johnson ran down the 55-foot long runway, then ran back and lept up to GONG the bell. That was cool.

- Note to Angus Young -- ENOUGH with the guitar solo. It was cool for the first 15 minutes. The next 5 to 10 minutes, I think, were what killed my ears.

- Seen in the crowd; Premier Brad Wall, MP Andrew Scheer, Pats coach Curtis Hunt and wife Kim, Darren Mitchell, the Press Box Sports Bar owner/managers, Ottawa Senators scout Bob Lowes and his wife Shelley, Pats goalie coach Ryan Cyr and marketing man Chris Hutchinson, and a host of other good friends.

- One thing I spoke to Andrew Scheer about; there was a real "Big City" feel to that whole downtown area last night. For those who have been to the big events in larger centres but were also there last night, you know what I'm talking about. The whole area from about 13th Avenue up past Dewdney and from Lewvan Drive over to Broad Street was an absolute anthill from mid-afternoon well past midnight.

It struck me that if/when we get a new stadium, we'll have to get used to these types of spectacles, shows and traffic congestion. That's fine by me! This city still seems to be exploding.

And there were tons of friends in from Calgary to watch the performance who told me, "AC/DC's not coming to Calgary so we had to come here to see them!"

That's great too...

- I was asked in an interview this morning if the crowd was well-behaved. I'd have to say most were but I still wish people didn't feel the need to "light up" at these shows. The smell of that stuff gives me a migraine. "I smell the Rock N Roll in the air," screamed lead man Brian Johnson. "Love the stuff!"

Clearly I was in the minority there, so I gritted my teeth and waited it out.

- All in all it was a great show and I'm glad to say I was there. So who's next to come to Mosaic Stadium? Any thoughts, guesses or wishes?!

Have a great day!

Roddy, here I am on our small Coast Guard Vessel North... Very North on the MacKenzie River Near Tuktoyaktuk, NWT. I actually saw a flag flying outside the library in a very small community in the North where we layed over (Fort Simpson?)... betweeen the Canadian and Territorial flags. Pretty fantastic range the Green has, eh?

I read somewhere that your mind has the ability to rid itself of bad memories. Or at least shelve them for awhile if not erase them all together.

So being at Pats training camp this week was fun until something startled me; Regina's hockey team missed the playoffs in 2009. Ever since the club's last game of the year, I had completely flushed that distasteful season from my memory. Until Sunday.

So I asked Pats coach Curtis Hunt about the fact his team has an antsy fanbase. There will be no excuses for rebuilding amongst the Pats faithful. The time is now.

"You know what?" Hunt questioned. "I don't fault those emotions at all. I think we have a tremendous fanbase. They want success. When the fans look at our talent and the group and they smell under achievement, I think it's hard for them. But I feel the direction we've started and where we're going, and the demands we have put on them in terms of what it takes to be a Regina Pat, I'm hoping that the fans enjoy the product that we provide for them."

The Pats' annual Prairie Mobile Communications Blue & White Game goes tonight at 7:00 at the Lumsden Arena. All proceeds go towards Lumsden Minor Hockey.

G'day mate!

It's Australian Day here on the blog in honour of AC/DC's performance at Mosaic Stadium tonight.

1,000 workers will be scurrying around the home of the Roughriders today getting ready for the big show. I'll be one of the 38,000 in attendance although I'll admit to not being the hugest fan of the band.

But I'll watch just about any live show that comes through Regina because I appreciate the talent.

Maybe I'll see you there! The doors open at 6:00 ... the show starts at 7:30.

It's not a "down" week, or an "up" week. It's a bye week for the Saskatchewan Roughriders following Friday's 34-25 loss in Montreal.

Sure the Debbie Downers are out there, trying to have us believe the team is about to implode and is lucky to be 4-4.

However the vast, vast majority of folks I've spoken to around here feel the Riders gave the Als a serious run for their money the other night and it was a great stepping stone. There was plenty stacked against the Riders going into the match but they came out with an admirable effort against the league's top team.

The Riders feel upbeat about themselves. They feel confident and they know their best football is ahead of them when it's going to matter most.

But for now, it's time to rest. Weston Dressler went to Minot to make wedding plans. Stevie Baggs went to Atlanta to do whatever he does. Jeremy O'Day's going to his couch. And Darian Durant is staying here to be a film rat and watch hours and hours of tape in order to get better.

The Riders will take a backseat until their next game which is the soldout Labour Day Classic September 6 against Mike Kelly's puzzling Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Maybe the Regina Pats will get a few headlines this week while the Riders rest.

----

Speaking of...

I'm not saying the Pats scouting staff is old, but one of them said on Sunday at training camp that rookie forward Shaq Merasty of Minnedosa, Manitoba reminds him of Frank Mahovlich!

I suppose we could call Merasty "The Big M" too if he makes the team.

All in all the Pats look sharp from what I saw. They'll be in Edmonton this weekend for the Oil Kings preseason tournament for their first game action.

I'll have in-depth interviews with coach Curtis Hunt and GM Brent Parker tonight on Sportsline. Curtis will explain what he learned in less-than-a-season with the Ottawa Senators and what it feels like to be back while Brent will give some interesting insight as well.

I won't be accompanying the squad to Edmonton. It's the last weekend off for me before working 90 consecutive days (till after Grey Cup).

Red Deer Rebels' announcer/reporter Andrew Walker wants you to know he has a ton of Rebels information and notes on Saskatchewan kids at Rebs camp on his blog. It's on my blog roll with a link at the top left of this page.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is holding a news conference in Weyburn on Thursday to unveil its inaugural induction class into the SJHL Hall of Fame.

----

A note from the CFL:

Please be reminded that this week's Hamilton at Edmonton game has been changed to Saturday, August 29 @ 7:00 ET (5:00 local) from Thursday, August 27.

Please make your adjustments accordingly.

----

As predicted by ESPN's Colin Cowherd, the blog fad is dying.

Three years ago there were 70,000 blogs starting up per day across North America. Now, of those, 80% have not been updated in 120 days (or four months).

What's the new fad? Twitter.

Again, for those who are new, Twittering is a way for someone to write a quick update online (no longer than 140 letters).

Here are a few interesting quotes from CFLer's on Twitter after this weekend's games:

@geroysimon: I can't explain the feeling in my gut right now. I feel the need to apologize for our performance last night.

@barrinsimpson: Great win 2nite 4 us vs BC, a much needed win. Very happy about the win n frustrated w/ toe injury.

@steviebaggs: Im back home in Ft. Lauderdale and now headed to ATL for the rest of the bye week thanks for the support ridernation and fans we will b back

Reading Twitter and following these guys is like reading a constantly updated newspaper online and you're getting the players' thoughts right from the horses' mouths.

I've been expanding my comments on Twitter too, and it's been fun.

But I also don't think this blog will go away any time soon. If anything, it'll turn into just another sports-type website. It won't be called a blog if that term becomes passe.

I'm just trying to figure out where we're going in this digital world and trying to stay on the curve, if not ahead of it.

----

Interesting note:

The Melonhead phenomena for the Saskatchewan Roughriders was spawned by two young Rider fans at Winnipeg Stadium (yes, I believe before there was a Canad Inn Stadium).

The Phoenix Group's Darren Mitchell and Rider marketing director Trent Fraser were at a Rider game in Winnipeg and saw two 20-something Rider fans coming up the steps with Rider flags as capes and watermelons on their heads, high-fiving everyone in attendance.

Mitch and T.F. looked at each other, nodded, and the phenomena was born.

Do you think we could ever get ahold of those two kids and ask them their story?

CFL.ca will be at Mosaic Stadium Labour Day weekend to do a feature on Melonheads.

It truly has been a remarkably successful marketing initiative.

Now I'm told in B.C. the Lions are doing a pumpkin-head sort of promotion and I think that's a great idea...

----

Something else that's interesting;

The Roughriders don't count turnovers on downs as turnovers. When they refer to "ball security", they mean fumbles and interceptions. Which makes sense, so why do we keep track of turnovers on downs at all in the CFL? It IS meaningless when teams are unsuccessful on 3rd-and-10s late in games.

Part of coach Miller's "Good To Great" philosophy is that games are broken down into three factors:

1 - Ball Security Ratio: which was just explained.
2 - Field Position: self-explanatory.
3 - Big Play Ratio: which team has more plays of 20+ yards than the other over the course of a game.

UNFAILINGLY whichever team wins two out of those three phases wins the game. If you consistently take all three, you're on course for a championship.

I find this very interesting.

How can we translate this to hockey?

----

Rider guard Marc Parenteau was ALL over my radio partner Carm Carteri for picking Montreal to beat the Riders Friday night. He repeatedly said he was going to kidney punch Carm if they won, and he wasn't joking.

Carm said if the Riders win, Parenteau can punch him wherever he wants!

See? It's not comfortable picking your team to lose when you have to share airspace with them.

----

In Montreal, they like the Alouettes but they really LOVE the Canadiens. It's just NOT a football town. There, it's all hockey and all Canadiens all the time. 24/7/365.

The Alouettes staff didn't hand out stats after the game, whereas most teams hand them to us before the ink is dry afterwards.

I couldn't find a down and distance clock anywhere in the stadium (which is somewhat essential when broadcasting or following a game). And none of the sellout crowd seemed to care.

So Saskatchewan remains football country, and the heartland of the Canadian gridiron. There's no threat of Quebec taking over the title.

A U.S. study found the average video game user is:

1) aged 35,
2) often overweight,
3) introverted and....
4) may be depressed.

Don't look now, but my hand is in the air. I'm a video game user and have two of the above four qualities.

Maybe stats aren't for losers after all.

Nor are video games.

"In short, (gamers) literally take their minds off their worries while playing a video game," the researchers said in a statement.

I highly recommend it. My favourites are NCAA 09, NHL 07 and World Series of Poker.

When your mind gets too scrambled, a quick game of Texas Tech vs Ole Miss can straighten you out.

----

It's hard not to get swept up in NFL training camps and the bountiful coverage on ESPN Radio, ESPN.com and NFL Radio on Sirius satellite these days.

Here are some fun notes from the past week:

In Minnesota they booed QB Tavaris Jackson when he came onto the field Friday night against Kansas City. The reason? No reason other than it meant Brett Favre was done for the night.

Yes, Favre got a raucous ovation from the fans who loathed him for years as a member of the Green Bay Packers.

That's like Rider fans cheering for Ricky Ray if he ever QB'd the Green & White, or Pats fans applauding Kelly McCrimmon if he ever coached Regina.

----

Giants receiver Plaxico Burress gets two years in prison for shooting himself while Donte Stallworth gets less than a month in jail for drinking and driving and actually KILLING somebody????

In the words of former Global TV sportscaster Bob Krawchuk, "stop the world, I want to get off."

----

On that Twitter thing, for the best NFL updates, sign up to follow ESPN's Chris Mortensen and/or Adam Shefter.

Although Shefter had to take a break on the weekend when he woke up his wife while Twittering in bed on his BlackBerry.

What kind of a LOSER would do THAT?

Oh yah. I did that not too long ago too. :)

----

I met a girl in Crave on Saturday night who was a sales rep for Tylenol, Reactin and Cialis.

Talk about your dream girl! She's got everything you need.

----

The SleepInn in Minot, ND welcomes all Canadians! So says the illuminated sign in their parking lot. AND it's the only place in Minot to watch CFL games on TSN. Weston Dressler's future father-in-law is a regular in their lounge for each week's Rider game.

And what a thrill it was for this broadcaster to make their Wall of Fame of hotel guests last week! That group of autographed photos includes luminaries such as Ann Margaret, George Jones, Fergie, the Oak Ridge Boys, the North Dakota Governor as well as the Riders', Gene Makowsky and Weston Dressler!

The SleepInn also has the largest indoor waterpark in the four-state area, and is attached to the Dakota Square Mall so you don't even have to go outside when the weather sucks.

----

Also, thanks to my boy Garts for passing along the tip on the new Buffalo Wild Wings in Minot. Over the course of three days, we ate their twice and could've gone back again.

Nice spot. If Minot can have one, you'd think Regina could support one too!

But I've learned we won't be getting a Hooters though. Regina isn't a large enough centre.

You'll have to settle for the Press Box Sports Bar and let's be honest, it's better than all the rest anyways.

Speaking of, I resent those who say Canada's best-looking women are in the East.

As if!

----

How about this? Perhaps you can answer it...

The World Track and Field Federation asked for a gender verification test on an athlete because she/he was winning too much and they couldn't tell if the athlete was a man or a woman.

They said the results of the test wouldn't be known for WEEKS! WTH????

Isn't it as simple as asking them to come around the corner and drop their drawers?

However administering that test isn't the job I would want in sports. Especially if she's so homely you can't tell whether she's a boy or a girl.

----

Okay that's all I got for today so keep the bugs off your bumper and the bears off your tail and we'll talk to you tonight on Sportsline.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

Coach Reed Discusses Special Teams

The Roughriders' special teams have come under fire as of late and upon the team's arrival from Montreal this weekend, Rider special teams coach Kavis Reed discussed the situation with Rawlco's Jamie Nye:

REED: We're young there. And we're not constructed really as a "big" special teams unit so we have to look at focusing on technique. The thing that I've understood about coaching special teams is that it's about continuity. Especially on the punt team. And we haven't had that since Week 3 and the difference is being highlighted. We have young guys in there, smaller guys, who are not technically sound and I have to keep doing that. Changes on the roster do happen in this league so all this week right here we'll look at technique. We'll look at trying to get the best of the guys that we can, and accelerate their growth hopefully.

Q. Do you hope to simplify it and say just to knock someone on their butt?

REED: I wish it was that simple and essentially that's what we do tell them but there's a lot that goes into that. There's a lot goes into the technique in terms of blocking, protecting, understanding where the ball's being kicked ... there's so many things that have to work together in order to have a successful coverage team, and also successful returns. If it were that simple, trust me, that message would've already been gotten through but it's not that simple.

Q. Is it a smaller unit without Kye Stewart and Rey Williams?

REED: Like I said, I coach the guys that are on the field. But yes, I am missing those guys. The thing is we have to make sure we coach the guys on the field and understand that if you look at the guys on the field, most of them are playing just their second, third game and a lot of them are playing out of position. So I feel the stress in terms of getting them prepared, and not having continuity. For me, it's not a matter of the guys not being able to do it. It's a matter of keeping them together and not changing position every week.

Q. What happened on the Larry Tayloer 68-yard punt return touchdown for Montreal?

REED: The kick, we want it outside the numbers, but Larry got a good kick and he's an outstanding returner. Our guy set him up on the boundary and he went back up the middle and took it up the field. We didn't set the point well on that one. Having watching the film, we didn't set the point well. I give Taylor credit, he's an oustanding returner.

Q. And what about Eric Morris giving up the single point on that last punt return which made it a two-score game and didn't allow you to come back?

REED: Those are things, when you look at it, Eric Morris was in his third or fourth game and the ball took a severe hop on him as well. When you look at it, the difference between Eric and Dressler is that Dressler's been in the league a year and a half. He fielded the same punt earlier in the game and had seen that before. Eric had not. As a special teams coach, when you get 15 minutes with them a day and try to cram all that into them, you expect those kind of mistakes will happen. You don't want them to happen, but they do.

I feel for the kid because I know his intentions are to do everything exactly right. It's a mistake. We move on from that.

Q. Will you change anything in the bye week?

REED: The one thing you gotta understand is that special teams is about what happens on offence and defence. I don't get to go in and choose the guys that I want. I have to get the guys that are available to me via the ratio, and also via defence and offence. I can't go in and say I want five 250 lb linebackers that run 4.5's. I can't do that. I have to work with offensive and defensive players and maybe get three or four guys that are just for special teams. It's one of those things where I'll look at every avenue in terms of technique and scheme, to make sure guys are as prepared as they can be. I never lose sleep with regards to their preparation. I lose sleep over hoping they don't make the mental mistakes they have been making.

Rider Prospect Shines:

Chase Daniel's two TDs help Redskins top Steelers 17 13

LANDOVER, Md. - The battle of the towels was fought to a soggy draw. The Pittsburgh Steelers first-team offence scored a touchdown without Ben Roethlisberger. And the Washington Redskins managed to get their first points of the preseason, albeit with the help of a fake punt and a fourth-string quarterback.

Rookie Chase Daniel, fighting the odds to earn a roster spot, threw two touchdown passes long after the starters had left the game, overcoming another difficult night for Washington's first-team offence in Saturday's 17-13 win over Pittsburgh.

Willie Parker had a three-yard touchdown run for the Steelers, whose starting defence looked in regular season form on a goal line stand on the opening drive. Pittsburgh limited Washington's Jason Campbell to one completion in a little more than one quarter of play.

With Roethlisberger watching from the sideline - unable to play after a teammate stepped on his Achilles' tendon during practice this week - Charlie Batch and the Pittsburgh starters played the first three drives before giving way to the backups early in the second quarter.

Batch was 5 for 14 for 63 yards, and Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward made nice catches on a 50-yard drive capped by the scoring run from Parker, who missed last week's game with back spasms. The touchdown was celebrated by thousands of Terrible Towels waved by Steelers fans who again found plenty of prime seats at the Redskins'
stadium.
