Big Day In The Dub

It's a very nervous day for WHL draft elligible teenaged hockey players across western Canada. The annual Western Hockey League Bantam Draft will be staged in Edmonton today, set to commence mid-morning.

I'm not there this time around but I have been in the past and without question, it's the biggest day of the year for Regina Pats head scout Todd Ripplinger (pictured above) and GM Brent Parker. Their intensity is like Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Try to make a joke and they bite your head off! Anyways, they seem to know what they're doing so hopefully they have another good day. The Queen City Kids own the 5th overall pick in the derby. Here are some quotes from Ripper going into today's draft:

"It's not a secret we haven't taken a forward in a long time. We'll take the best guy available. But if there's a forward there (at #5) that we like, that's what we're looking at right now."

"From our top-40 list, I'm very happy with it. As years have gone by, we've usually got three or four good players out of the top-40. It's just how we like 'em. Other guys may see it differently but we're happy with our top-40 list and we know we're going to get a least three good players out of it."

"I think there'll be four or five Regina kids selected in this draft. We're not focused on Regina though. If there's a good guy there, we'll take him. We've had some good luck with Regina guys, and some bad luck too. Hockey Regina's doing a good job developing players and hopefully we get to call a few Regina players this year."

The U of R Rams open spring camp this Friday at 3:00pm on campus. This year 3rd-year veteran quarterback Mark Mueller (pictured, courtesy leaderpost.com) steps into the spotlight thanks to the graduation of Teale Orban. Mueller will pull some big headlines not only here in Regina, but Canada-wide due to the fact he's Ron Lancaster's grandson.

"We're confident that Mark is going to step in and do the job," Rams coach Frank McCrystal told CKRM on Wednesday. "He's worked very hard the last two years, not only during the season by grasping a knowledge of the game, but also by physically preparing himself. Not just his body as a whole, but his arm and concentrating on getting the ball to the out which is so important on this wide field."

It's going to be a fun year following the U of R Rams with Mark at the helm. It'll also be emotional as well, as Mark plays in the stadium made famous by his grandpa, Ron Lancaster.

We're pretty proud at 620 CKRM to be the Voice of the Rams and excited to be able to bring you all the action again in 2009.

Rams prepare for annual spring camp

REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina Rams will get back on the field this weekend as they host their annual spring camp at their practice field on campus. The Rams return eight offensive starters and eight defensive starters from last year’s team that went 5-3 and finished in third place in the conference. Fourth-year wide receiver Jordan Sisco and fifth-year right guard Nick Hutchins, who were both named 2008 conference all-stars, highlight the returning offensive players. The defensive returners are led by Canada West all-star linebacker Brandon Ganne and fifth-year rush end Stan Van Sichem, who is the U of R’s all-time leader with 13 career sacks.

DOUBLE DUTY: JANOTTA, LUKOMSKI TO PLAY FOR FOOTBALL, MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS
The University of Regina’s football and men’s basketball teams announced Wednesday that Riffel High standout Jared Janotta has committed to both programs and will be a multi-sport athlete beginning in 2009-10 at the U of R.

On the hardcourt, Janotta helped the Royals reach the 2009 provincial 5A final, where Riffel was edged by Campbell Collegiate despite 25 points from the 6’3” guard. He put up huge numbers during his high school career, including a 45-point effort against O’Neill during his Grade 11 season. Janotta was also a prolific receiver for the Royals on the gridiron, catching 13 touchdown passes in seven games during the 2008 regular season. Also outstanding in the classroom at Riffel, Janotta plans to major in industrial systems engineering at the U of R.

Janotta might not be the only player doing double duty with the football and men’s basketball teams this season, as Jeff Lukomski will enter his fourth season with the Cougars next year but will be participating in this weekend’s spring camp with the Rams as a defensive back. Lukomski, who is just 10 three-pointers away from becoming the U of R’s all-time leader with two seasons of CIS eligibility still remaining, last played football for the O’Neill Titans during the 2004 season.

Janotta and Lukomski are attempting to walk in the footsteps of Chris Warnecke, the only other U of R athlete to play for both the men’s basketball and football teams. Warnecke played five seasons of basketball with the Cougars and was a receiver for the Rams in 1999 and 2000, the team’s first two seasons at the CIS level.

USHERING IN THE MUELLER ERA
With Teale Orban’s five-year reign as the Rams’ starting quarterback now over, third-year pivot Marc Mueller is expected to take over behind centre. Mueller, grandson of the late Ron Lancaster, completed seven of 18 pass attempts last season for 65 yards in limited duty as Orban’s backup.

DERKSON’S STATUS TO BE DETERMINED
Running back Luke Derkson was a revelation for the Rams last year, rushing for 734 yards before suffering a season-ending injury against Alberta late in the season. Derkson was listed as a fifth-year player last season, but will participate in this weekend’s camp as the Rams are considering filing an eligibility appeal based on his limited playing time with the Vancouver Island Raiders during the 2007 season.

BROTHER ACTS
Three new faces in camp this weekend are brothers of current Rams. Quarterback Bill McConkey, who is attending camp after redshirting with the Windsor Lancers last season, is the older brother of second-year wideout Mark McConkey. Running back Dustin Kappel is the younger brother of third-year back Austin Kappel, while linebacker Taylor Cameron is the younger brother of fourth-year offensive lineman Rorey Cameron.

CFL DRAFT SET FOR SATURDAY
The Rams have a pre-practice team meeting on Saturday scheduled for 9 a.m., but considering the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft starts at the same time, there’s little doubt that the clubhouse televisions will be tuned into TSN to keep tabs on the proceedings. Cornerback Tamon George is ranked No. 8 by the CFL Scouting Bureau, while Van Sichem is ranked No. 15.

CAMP SCHEDULE
Friday, May 1 - 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Friday, May 1 - 7:30 to 9:35 p.m.
Saturday, May 2 - 9:30 to 11:35 a.m.
Saturday, May 2 - 3:30 to 5:35 p.m.
Sunday, May 3 - 11:30 a.m. (scrimmage)

Wednesday Blogging

There are some very disturbed people in this world.

I got an email from The Hedgehog Chad Jeremy at CKRM headquarters yesterday saying a man - who wouldn't identify himself - called into the CKRM sports desk saying the Riders were set to announce a three-way trade with Toronto and Edmonton today. He even mentioned the players involved, although I won't mention the names since the rumour was nothing but a ball of gas. Let's just say the guy reported it would be an offensive lineman and a receiver. This guy even went so far as to call the Leader Post sports department and pitch the same b.s.

UNFORTUNATELY, as the Voice of the Riders, I've got to check this stuff out. And as the club's beat reporter, Murray McCormick had to as well. And basically, we were laughed off the phone. As a matter of fact I believe the quote was "yah and we're also going to announce at the news conference that Jim Hopson and Steve Mazurak are coming out of retirement and that's why we're making the trades; we have depth at O-line and receiver."

I hung up the phone, feeling an inch tall. And what really ticks me off is that I see there's been a ton of hits to this blog from people overnight who've Googled "Rider 3-way trade" so obviously this guy's spun quite a web of tomfoolery.

Please sir, find another hobby besides wasting our time.

Rob Vanstone and Murray McMormick have blogged about it over at Rider Rumblings on the Leader Post site. I've linked to it, and it's over to the left of this page on my blog roll.

Hey Rob and Murray!!! How about a link back to here? That would be swell.

----

Pfffffffffffffffft.

That's the sound of my Pats playoff draft hopes. The New Jersey Devils stuck their head where the sun doesn't shine for a span of 48 seconds and allowed Carolina to score two quick goals and win Game 7 by a 4-3 score.

My disdain lasted about five seconds. I've got friends going though a lot more serious stuff in their lives than a silly playoff draft.

Maybe next year.

----

Had enough of the Swine Flu yet?

That's what's awful about the North American media today. Once they get ahold of something like this, they beat it to its death.

How about spending more time and channeling our energies towards finding Torrie Stafford??

Check back Friday for Friday Observations. It's another version of the Monday Morning Goalie. I've got more thoughts on Stanley Cup playoff coverage, and a few stories.

After a year out of hockey, selling cars in Edmonton, Dean Clark is ready for the season to start now.

Clark, 45, was unveiled Tuesday as the new head coach of the Prince George Cougars — and he immediately got to work saying his new team will not be a lemon.

“I’m excited about all the good young talent we have, and that we can build around,” said Clark, who succeeds Wade Klippenstein, who got the job on Dec. 1 when Drew Schoneck was fired.
“When I look at Prince George, I think they’ve had a tough time in part because they haven’t had consistency behind the bench. There have been a lot of changes in mid-season, and it’s harder to build a program with that happening. I hope this can change that, and they’ve told me they believe in me being able to do it.”

Clark is a veteran WHL head man, a respected coach who is 12th all-time in regular-season wins with 382 (382-253-61), and is sixth-overall in playoff wins with 61. His dozen seasons include his first job in Calgary (1996-2001), two seasons of taking the Brandon Wheat Kings to the Eastern Conference final (2001-2003), and a tumultuous stint running the Kamloops Blazers.

CFL

WINNIPEG, MB – The Blue Bombers signed a pair of defensive backs today. Nick Kordic and John Eubanks have joined the football club.

As per team policy, details of the agreements are not disclosed.

Kordic (6-0, 210, Western Ontario ’08, DOB: Oct. 21, 1983 in Toronto, ON) played in 15 games with the Hamilton Ti-Cats in 2008, primarily on special teams.

Kordic finished last season tied for fourth on his team with 11 special teams tackles.

Eubanks (5-10, 173, Southern Mississippi ’06, DOB: July 13, 1983 in Mound Bayou, MS) signed with the NFL’s Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent in 2006.

In college he was the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year in 2004.

“We’re very pleased to add these two players to our roster. We think they will add to the competitiveness of our defensive backfield,” said head coach Mike Kelly.

The Winnipeg Football Club also released non-import receiver Jamie Stoddard and import defensive back Aric Williams today.

Big Dub News

From Jim Swanson, Citizen Sports Editor

The Prince George Cougars have a new head coach.

Dean Clark, 45, has agreed to a five-year contract to take over the Western Hockey League franchise. Clark succeeds Wade Klippenstein, who took over on an interim basis on Dec. 1 when Drew Schoneck was fired.

Klippenstein will remain as assistant general manager, and is expected to take control of the scouting operations some time after Thursday's WHL bantam draft.

Clark has been a head coach with the Calgary Hitmen, Brandon Wheat Kings and Kamloops Blazers, compiling a record of 382-253-61. He was named CHL coach-of-the-year in 1998 after steering the Hitmen following the Graham James scandal, then led the Hitmen to an overtime loss in the 1999 Memorial Cup.

I have to apologize to the Molson people. I posted on the Monday Morning Goalie that Kevin Dureau of the Press Box and I have developed an affection for Molson Canadian as of late. Maybe it's because of the ads during the playoffs, I don't know what, but Canadian tastes more delicious than ever. Then I inexplicably deleted it, just before the post got sent to all the Molson big shots across western Canada.

So here it is again! Thanks Molson.

Please enjoy responsibly.

Lions add two imports to offensive line

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced today that import offensive linemen Martin Bibla and Darren Marquez have signed with the team.

Bibla brings a significant amount of experience to the Lions after spending time with the Atlanta Falcons (’02-’05) who selected him in the fourth round (116th overall) in 2002 NFL Draft, as well as the Denver Broncos (’06). The Miami-grad and former teammate of current Lions offensive lineman Sherko Haji-Rasouli also played two seasons (’07-‘08) with the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul.

Marquez comes to the club after signing with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2008. The New Orleans-native started 39 career games at left tackle for Southern Illinois (’05-’07) and was named to the All-Gateway Conference First-Team as a senior after anchoring a line that paved the way to 2,705 rushing yards in 2007.

Name game back on; CFL: Roughriders vs. Rough Riders
Kingston Whig-Standard (ON)
Byline: DON BRENNAN, SUN MEDIA;

Jim Hopson is excited about the prospect of having Ottawa back in the CFL -- just not so thrilled that the would-be franchise owners want to call the team the Rough Riders.

As one might guess, the president/ CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders is among those who believes each club in a league really should have its own nickname.

"The consensus here is that we would like to see only one Roughrider team in the league," Hopson said. "We are pretty proud of the name Roughriders and the success and history we've had with it."

Yet the Jeff Hunt-fronted consortium that this week moved closer to its goal of re-incarnating pro football in the nation's capital already has an agreement with former Ottawa Rough Rider owner Horn Chen to purchase the old team logo and name for a price that's believed to be in the $100,000 range.

To have stuff to stick both on, all the group needs now is a home.

While the team likely would not begin play until the 2011 season, the name game will assuredly start as soon as the stadium deal is signed and the "conditional" tag is lifted off the franchise.

"I played in the '70s and the Riders broke our hearts more than once," Hopson, a former Roughriders offensive lineman, said yesterday from Regina. "It was always the East Riders versus the West Riders, or Green Riders ... there was some ridicule made of that."

Athletic supporters ; Rider Nation comes out swinging over 'crotch shot'
The Winnipeg Sun
Byline: BY PAUL FRIESEN

I've got to hand it Saskatchewan Roughriders fans: they don't take a hit below the belt lightly.

Reaction to my Saturday column about Blue Bomber head coach Mike Kelly's "crotch shot" was swift and decisive, and well worth sharing with the rest of you faithful readers.

As you've probably heard by now, Kelly and Bomber president Lyle Bauer had a few chuckles over one fan's reference to Saskatchewan as "the crotch of Canada" at the Bombers' annual fan forum last week.

Complaints from the nation's nether region came pouring in, resulting in a formal apology from Bauer -- to which I scribbled a few lines about the whole thing being much ado about nothing.

Well, that got the e-mail box humming.

Here are some of the crown gems, so to speak.

"Read your waste of paper this morning," writes Mike. "Typical justification of bullying!"

Thanks for helping me waste more paper today, Mike.

As for your suggestion of bullying, wouldn't that imply Winnipeg, or the Bombers, are the big, tough kid to Saskatchewan's weakling?

That's certainly not the case, as our next letter writer points out.

"Going back to 2005," Gary begins. "The ugly Bombers have played the Riders 10 times. Results: Sask. 8 wins (including the 2007 Grey Cup). The farm club out of Winnipeg 2 wins.

"Wanna give our Saskatoon Hilltops a go to try and even those stats out a bit?"

And some of you thought Rider fans couldn't even count to 10! Gary's math is bang-on.

Referring to the Bombers as a farm club? Hey, Gary, we're used to it. We have the Manitoba Moose, remember.

Letter writer Leonard had monkeys, not Moose, on his mind when he wrote:

"Mr. Friesen: Your simian countenance suggests a heritage unusually rich in species diversity. But I mean no disrespect -- it's all in good fun! P.S.: I'm guessing orangutan (kidding!)."

Mr Cote: Your big words suggest I consult my dictionary. I'll get back to you.

After I finish my banana.

Back to Gary, who apparently didn't get it all off his chest in just one e-mail. In a subsequent missive, he got all cultured on me:

"When I think of sports and culture in Winnipeg, there is nothing to think about!" he wrote. "Saskatoon is commonly referred to as the 'Paris of Canada' for good reason. Winnipeg has had the same population (600,000) for the last 50 years for many a reason I am thinking!"

At least you're thinking, Gary. I think.

Oh, and Vive le Riders!

Reading through this next one, I thought I'd finally found a supporter (journalistic, not athletic).

"Hi Paul. I enjoyed your recent column regarding Saskatchewan people getting tied up in a knot over Coach Kelly's all-in-fun humorous comments ... this was taken far too seriously."

Sounded good, so far.

"I would have e-mailed sooner but was having trouble with the big words in your article. I also misplaced my dentures and had to spend time finding them (eventually did under my banjo). Well I sure would like to come visit the anus of Canada (that's what Cousin Jim calls Winnypeg) some time but my horse that pulls my buggy gets so tired he can't make the long trip. Cheers, Brad. Redneck Rider Fan."

Brad does have a point. If Saskatchewan is, indeed, the crotch, and we're next to it...

And since we're dealing with body parts, I thought we'd let Valerie have the last word.

"This intended insult has backfired," she writes. "Because as anybody knows, the crotch is where the genitals are and they keep the population going. Yay Saskatchewan!"

On that note, keep those e-mails coming, Rider fans.

From whatever hole you're crawling out of.

at Mosaic Stadium. The camp is for players currently in Grade 9-11. Each position is coached by a professional. Who better to teach a young QB than Marcus Crandell, and olinemen...then Jeremy Oday? The players are taught fundamentals and given knowledge learned through experience from their coaches. And it's all done in a relaxed competitive environment. The
weekend consists of 3 practices and 1 scrimmage. Each player receives a camp Jersey, T-shirt, and lunch for both days. This year the players will also receive a tour of the Rider locker room. Proceeds from this camp go to
Kidsport. The offensive positions spots have been filled....so defensive
spots are in high demand. For more information please go to our website:

www.mattdfootballcamp.com

Thanks for your support,
Matt Dominguez

P.S. There is also a "Donate" button on our site for anyone who wishes to donate directly to Kidsport.

THE FAN 590 IS THE 2009 HOME OF THE ARGOS

Toronto - As announced this morning on THE FAN 590, 2009 Toronto Argonauts games will be broadcast on THE FAN 590 as the Argos extended their agreement with the station. The home of the Argos will carry all games live on THE FAN 590 or on fan590.com, including pre- and post-game shows. In addition, THE FAN 590 will continue to broadcast an hour-long weekly Argos show throughout the season, making its 2009 debut on Wednesday, June 10 at 9:00 a.m.

Nelson Millman, Vice President, General Manager/Program Director, THE FAN 590, remarked, "THE FAN 590 is proud to be the radio voice of the Toronto Argonauts. The games will be broadcast on our main signal and of course on our very popular Internet platform. The Toronto Argonauts are great partners and together we are all looking forward to following the Argos to the 2009 Grey Cup game."

Returning to the Argos radio broadcasts will be colour commentator Peter Martin. A fan favourite, the former Toronto Argonauts linebacker (1965-1972) and President of the Argos Alumni Association, Martin offers many historical insights and entertaining stories to the listeners. Martin, who has handled colour duties for decades, will be joined by THE FAN 590's Mike Hogan in the booth. Hogan is known as a football fanatic, and has made "Football Fridays" a mainstay on his show "The Bullpen". Known as the voice of the Argos (2000-2001, 2007-present), Hogan has provided the radio play-by-play of 13 Vanier Cup games and has also called hockey, boxing and hoops on radio and television. A member of the CIS Football Top-10 Committee, Mike is also a writer/editor of the Sports Forecaster magazine.

Mike Hogan will also serve as host of Inside The Argos, the hour-long weekly show on THE FAN 590, airing every Wednesday morning from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. beginning June 10. Returning as co-host will be former Argo and two-time Grey Cup Champion Sandy Annunziata. A 10-year CFL offensive lineman, Annunziata spent six years as an Argo, winning a Grey Cup with the Double Blue in 2004. He ended his career in Edmonton where he won another Grey Cup in 2005. Sandy makes his home in Fort Erie, Ontario where he serves on city council. Sandy is also the CEO of Body Science Ltd., a diagnostic testing centre in Niagara Falls.

Argos GM/VP, Football Operations, Adam Rita, commented, "THE FAN 590 is where I go for my sports news and it only makes sense that it continues to be the home of the Argos. I always enjoy talking football with Pete Martin, Mike Hogan, Sandy Annunziata, Sara Buchan, Bob McCown and all of the great on-air folks and producers at the station."

Regina Pats GM Brent Parker is no closer to a decision on his coaching staff for 2009-2010. At a pre-Draft media gathering on Monday, Parker fielded the question from Global TV's Warren Woods.

"No comment on it all right now," Parker said. "Nothing's changed. It's status quo as per every other year. We've done our evaluations but the past three weeks have all been about the bantam draft. Once I get through this, I'll meet with the coaches next week and go forward with our plan from there."

Parker also said they're close to getting a committment from Notre Dame Hounds star Drew George to suit up in a Pats uniform.

"We hope so. The big thing is we're going to sit down with the family now that their season is done. I don't believe in bothering players during their playoffs. We'll sit down with the family and see if we can get him committed. We were able to get Brandon Davidson committed on the weekend so we're excited about that and now we'd like to get a local kid like Drew committed."

----

I'm told CBC's Peter Mansbridge is in town today to give a speech at Queensbury Centre. I'm not sure whom he's speaking to, nor what he'll be speaking about. But I wouldn't mind sitting in on it.

----

Glad to see the message board mutants are using Kelowna Rockets broadcaster Regan Bartel as their latest pinnata.

What did you do now Regie?? Ha ha. Endless entertainment.

Glad it's not me. Good luck to Regan and the Rockets in the league final. The story on their series win over the Vancouver Giants is below.

----

We're zeroing in on tracking down that Bob Cole impersonator. Apparently he's added imitations of Steve Armitage and Bob Izumi to his repertoire.

Three buddies of mine, all farm-kids, emailed me yesterday to say I actually know this guy. Dean Altwasser (Yellow Grass), Darren Froats (Raymore) and Steve Linzmayer (Earl Grey/Strasbourg) all said they're going to try and get ahold of this guy and get him to call into the Wolf again.

I guess the tradition started when he'd come home drunk at 3:00 a.m. and start calling into the Wolf's answering machine and leaving these crazy messages.

After awhile, apparently he grew out of it (or grew up). I'm here asking him to go back to doing it!!

KELOWNA, B.C. - It's been four years since the Kelowna Rockets last hoisted a banner. On Monday night, the Rockets added a new one: Western Conference champions.

Mikael Backlund scored a hat trick for Kelowna, including the game-winning goal in overtime, as the Rockets rallied to defeat the Vancouver Giants 5-4 in Western Hockey League playoff action on Monday night.

With the win, Kelowna claimed its first Western Conference championship since 2005, and third in franchise history, winning the best-of-seven series 4-2.

Football Signings

Two of the Riders' negotiation list quarterbacks went undrafted however Chase Daniel signed with the Redskins and Graham Harrell will be trying out for the Browns at their mini-camp.

Free-agent QB Daniel to Redskins

Former Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel has signed a free-agent deal with the Washington Redskins after going undrafted this weekend despite remaining in contention for the Heisman Trophy during much of his senior season.
Daniel, who was a Heisman finalist in 2007, told The Kansas City Star that he would leave his home in Southlake, Texas, near Forth Worth on Thursday for the Redskins' weekend minicamp.

"Chris Meidt was the guy that worked me out at the combine, and he really liked me," Daniel said of the Redskins assistant coach. "I talked to [head] coach [Jim] Zorn a couple of times. I'm excited about the opportunity they presented."

Another former Big 12 quarterback, Texas Tech's Graham Harrell, will participate in the Cleveland Browns' rookie minicamp set for this weekend, according to The Dallas Morning News.

It was unclear if Harrell had agreed to a contract with the team.

Three running backs added to Lions training camp roster

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced today that import running backs Amos Allen, Damian Sims and Emmanuel Marc have signed with the team.

Lions fans will recall the name Allen as the former South Dakota star attempts to crack club's lineup for a second time after attending training camp in 2008. The Miami-native established single season records at SDU in 2007 including a game-high 302 yards on 32 carries and a season total of 1,961 yards on 265 carries.

Sims comes off a fantastic four-year career at Iowa ('05-'08) where he appeared in 43 games rushing for 1,504 yards on 279 carries with 13 TD's. The Boynton Beach, Florida resident and nephew of current Lion defensive halfback Korey Banks also added 25 career receptions for 240 yards.

Marc played two seasons at Delaware State ('06, '07) where he notched 1,401 career rushing yards on 237 carries and added 14 touchdowns along with 25 receptions for an additional 242 yards. The speedy back also returned 29 kickoffs for 633 yards. Prior to transferring to Delaware State from Hudson Valley (NJCAA), Marc led all junior college players with 2,038 rushing yards and 18 TD's in 2003 and was named the NJCAA's Offensive Player of the Year.

Stand-out Boise State QB Zabransky signs with Esks

(Edmonton)  The Edmonton Eskimos have signed free agent quarterback Jared Zabransky, the club announced today.

After starting his Boise State career as a back-up to current Winnipeg quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie, Zabransky moved into the starting position his sophomore year leading the Broncos to an 11-1 record and was voted the team's Most Valuable Player. His senior year, Zabransky guided BSU to a perfect 12-0 record, capturing Boise State's fifth consecutive WAC championship. He capped off his college career by leading the Broncos to a thrilling 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and was named Offensive Player of the Game. He left Boise State with 612 completions in 983 attempts for 8,256 yards and 58 touchdowns in 48 games (39 starts).   Zabransky's sterling collegiate career and Fiesta Bowl heroics earned him the honour of being on the cover of EA Sports "NCAA Football 08" video game.
Zabransky spent time on the Houston Texans' practice squad after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2007.  After his release from Texas, Zabransky signed with Pittsburgh and was waived July 2, 2008.

Eskimo Head Coach Richie Hall says, "Jared Zabransky is an accurate passer, very mobile and he has outstanding leadership abilities.  His skills are well suited to the CFL game."

Parenteau On Sportsline

Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive lineman Marc Parenteau will be our featured guest on 620 CKRM's Sportsline program tonight at 6:05pm MT live at Capital Ford Lincoln. www.620ckrm.com

Also on the show, we'll get the scoop on the Regina Pats' draft plans for this week's WHL Bantam Draft in Edmonton following today's 2:00 newser at the Brandt Centre.

The Monday Morning Goalie

Welcome to a brand new week on the blog! I'll admit it's been rather slow-going on the blog of late. In fact, at times it's slowed right down to a halt. Fact is I've had little to say as of late, so I've kept my mouth shut.

But the Monday Morning Goalie is always fun so here are some jottings from a blogger/broadcaster/writer over the past week.

A young blogger asked me where I come up with ideas to write about. Well I used to carry a notepad and pen around and when I had an idea I'd write it down. Now, I just type it in the Blackberry. So here's a glimpse at what's been bouncing around my mind over the past seven days:

- First the scores:

Telus Cup Championship Final:
ND Hounds 4 Calgary 0
*The Hounds' three national championships are second only to the Regina Pat Canadians' four.

Anavet Cup Game 7
Humboldt 5 Portage 4 OT
*The Broncos overcame a 4-1 deficit in Game 7 to win it, and punch their ticket to the Royal Bank Cup in Victoria. Thanks to CJOB Winnipeg's Brian Munz for sending us audio of Broncos coach Dean Brockman this morning..

National Hockey League Playoffs (2)
Conference Quarter-finals
Washington 5 N.Y. Rangers 3
(Series tied 3-3)

Carolina 4 New Jersey 0
(Series tied 3-3)

----

The Riders should have an announcement on a new defensive line coach within two weeks' time. I don't know the guy's name, but he's an American. I spoke to coach Miller about it yesterday.

----

The Regina Pats have a news conference called for 2:00 this afternoon to preview this week's WHL Bantam Draft. Maybe someone will have the guts to ask Brent about Mitchell Blair's Curtis Hunt rumour?

Maybe Mitchell should come down himself as an accredited, professional blogger?

----

Kudos to the Moose Jaw Warriors board of directors. There was a strong rumour they were going to dump GM Chad Lang and coach Dave Hunchak in early-April.

Obviously, it was a bad rumour and the board understands those two individuals have the team pointed in the right direction.

What's the latest on the new rink over there anyways? Any shovels hit the ground yet?

----

I didn't really have a big problem with the comments of Blue Bomber coach Mike Kelly calling us the crotch of Canada last week although as a reporter, it got my spider senses tingling that it would be a big story.

To be honest, sports are so devoid of colourful personalities anymore that it's nice when someone has the grapes to step up and say something controversial. It's tough to do that these days because there's so many people ready to stone you when you have an unpopular opinion.

TSN's Dave Hodge gave Kelly a thumbs-down on The Reporters this weekend, which really is all that needs to be said about it.

Besides, I was reading Cosmo on the weekend and there was a headline "I Love Your Crotch!" in the magazine. I almost cut it out. Maybe there's a marketing campaign in there somewhere....

And can you imagine the abuse Mike Kelly's invited from the eastside stands for Labour Day Classic XLIII? I CAN'T WAIT!

----

On that topic, my eastside friends tell me that in 20 years of enduring intolerable verbal abuse, Wally Buono has NEVER turned around and acknowledged them. NOT ONE TIME.

Because you know the second he does, the hecklers win.

----

On that note, I think it's disgraceful that John Tortorella was suspended for Game 6 of the Rangers-Capitals series. I don't subscribe to the theory that fans can heave infinite amounts of abuse on coaches and players without fear of being accountable for it.

I'm not surprised somebody finally bit back, and I support Torts.

----

Something struck me while watching Calgary-Chicago Saturday night with the basketball dads when one of them, Gil, spoke of being in the old Chicago Stadium and how electric it was.

It made me think that over the next few seasons we should really appreciate Taylor Field/Mosaic Stadium for what it is. Because in a few years when we're in the new place, we're really going to miss the Grand Ol' Lady and what she represents.

----

I think the government could pay for this stadium from revenue off my speeding tickets alone.

DANG!! Where's the leniency?

----

Congrats to the Regina Hornets Grade 7 girls basketball'ers for kicking hindy again in the Strathmore, AB tournament. Four games, another gold medal, and they outscored their opponents 331-88.

These girls are a machine.

----

I was dressed in full Rider parapharnelia at the basketball tourney in Strathmore. Here's an exchange between me and one of the Calgary parents, wearing a Stamps jacket.

Her: "Riders suck!"

Me: "Who got the Cup?"

Her: "We do."

Me: "Oh yah I forgot. Well played."

----

It's hard to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs and not come to some conclusions and observations about the television coverage.

I can do without the interviews on-ice before the game that NBC does. I mean, Darren Pang and Jeff Carter held up the national anthem for their interview between the benches prior to the Philly-Pittsburgh game Saturday afternoon.

Guys, we just had 30 minutes of analysis -- we don't need two more minutes with a player in front of a live audience of 18,000 people in the arena (and none of them know what's being said.)

Yah, I know they're trying to be hip and cool and appeal to the American TV audience but guess what? Show more of the Cane-iacs and ice girls if you want to appeal to people.

Like Don Cherry says, "the U.S. has had the NHL since 1928. If they don't get it by now, they're never going to get it."

----

Tell me again why Peter Laviollette is out of a job? This guy's sharper than the edge of town on TSN.

----

Most guys I talk to really like P.J. Stock on CBC. I however, do not. I don't dislike him either, I just don't have an opinion either way. But the women totally love him.

----

Why do the Flames have an Alberta flag on their shoulder and the Oilers don't?

Maybe they do but I polled some Oiler fans I know and they couldn't say for sure whether they do or not.

----

What was Mike Milbury doing in the Bruins' management box the other night? Is he working for the B's?

----

A lotta closet Bruins fans have come out of the woodwork these days haven't they??

----

Ray Ferraro is money. He's hands-down the best hockey analyst on TV right now.

He talks at a level everybody understands, and has lots of great info to pass along. Pierre McGuire's a bit too technical and full of hockey-speak for me. Although, all the hockey guys love him. I guess he's a real good guy.

----

There's a razor fine line between experienced, and old. The Calgary Flames I'm afraid, are old. Watch the interviews! Iginla, Conroy, Sarich, Kipper, Bertuzzi, they're all old and wrinkled like me.

The Blackhawks look like the Pats! Fresh-faced, barely shaving but they're skating circles around the Flames.

They're like the early 80's Oilers. The question is, can Hawks management keep them together?

----

The girls are watching Wedding Crashers as we drive home from Alberta.

It's reminded me I've really got to get serious about losing weight. A few years ago everybody compared me to Vince Vaughn but lately it's been Will Ferrell (I get Frank the Tank a lot).

I guess it's better than Chris Farley.

----

Can anyone please locate that Bob Cole impersonater that used to call into the Wolf 104.9? That guy was money too.

I asked Ballsie to get him back on the air but he doesn't know the guy's name and he hasn't called in for years.

----

You're going to laugh at this one -- former WHL referee Alan Smith invited me to the Saskatchewan Referees Association golf tournament in Saskatoon this summer.

Why do I get the feeling that if I went, I'd be tied to a stake in the middle of the driving range and used for target practice?

Actually, some of my best relationships are with FORMER 'Dub refs like Mike Hasenfatz, Brad Meier, Rob Matsuoka, etc.

One time Hazzy told me in a Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot in Saskatoon, "the guys are getting tired of you roasting them so bad on the radio". So I laid off.

These days, I barely know any of the refs in the league. It's easier to roast them that way. I'm sure they're just as good a guys as the ones who've come before them.

I wouldn't know.

----

Something to think about:

The Station restaurant/pub in Strathmore, AB has one cent wings during Flames games. That's right, 500 wings for 5 bucks. Or 50 wings for $0.50.

What do you say Press Box? Hopefully they don't do it during Rider games, since I can't be there.

----

I don't feel so bad about the litter in the ditches in Regina after seeing all Medicine Hat's garbage this weekend. Actually, we're far cleaner. Kudos to the City of Regina workers for doing a real nice job.

----

The Toronto Blue Jays have the best record in the American League at 14-6 and tonight they open a series in Kansas City against the 9-9 Royals.

They've won six straight series to open the season ... let's hope they don't blow it against the lowly Royals!

----

Message to Old Dutch Foods: PLEASE bring back Buffalo Hot Wing chips!

----

I think about Calgary Flames assistant coach Rich Preston a lot (Regina Pats coach 1995-1997).

Particularly when I'm in a mall food court. One time in a mall food court in St. Louis, I left a tray behind. Rico said to ALWAYS take your tray to the garbage. ALWAYS. It's not hard to do.

----

Why doesn't Bassano, AB have a "Home of Mike Toth" sign outside the town?

____

For those trying to get ahold of me, please email instead of calling. I HATE talking on the phone, which may come as a surprise.

Email me and you'll get an almost immediate response. Call me, and it could take a few days.

----

You won't find any World Hockey Championships coverage here nor will there be any updates on the Pats Playoff Draft. In each case, nobody cares.

I've also realized there's nothing to be proud about for winning the Pats Draft twice in the past 14 years. Brent Parker and I are the only ones who've been here all that time! If any of these other guys who've won it had been around this long, they'd have won it multiple times too.

----

Finally, a Celebrity Apprentice update.

As advertised, Rivers delivered. The show's been lagging lately with not-the-greatest of personalities in the final six. They are; Joan Rivers and her daughter Melissa, Clint Black, Jesse James, Annie Duke and Brandi Roderick.

But there were fireworks last night when Melissa Rivers got fired and both she and her Mom went ballistic. Joan called poker star Annie Duke a P.O.S. and called Playboy playmate Brandi Roderick a "dumb blonde". I always wondered how people can lose complete control of themselves, particularly on television.

Just who is Melissa Rivers anyways? A TV host/Producer? On WHAT?

The way things are going, Jesse James (best known as Sandra Bullock's husband) while be chucking the knuckles with Clint Black on next week's show. They really don't get along well.

They're doing the best to keep the show from being boring so I'll give them credit for that.

GIANTS FALL 1-0

Kelowna leads WEST FINAL Series 3-2

The Vancouver Giants have been pushed to the brink of playoff elimination.
On Saturday night at the Pacific Coliseum, the Kelowna Rockets did the
pushing, edging the G-Men 1-0. Ryley Grantham scored the only goal of the
game late in period number one and Mark Guggenberger shut the door on the
Giants for the second consecutive game, turning aside 25 shots for his
second consecutive shutout win.

We know it's early, but candidates to be GM of Ottawa's football franchise ...
The Ottawa Sun
Byline: BY BRUCE GARRIOCH

BRENDAN TAMAN

Former Blue Bombers GM (2003-2008) should be the top candidate. He built the Bombers into a contender before parting ways with the club in the off-season. A Rough Riders' personnel director in the late 1980s and '90s, Taman has great eye for talent. Well-respected.

JOCK CLIMIE

The former Rough Riders slotback (1991-94) would have to be talked into taking on this challenge. He's now a successful lawyer (in Ottawa) and CFL analyst on TSN. But he knows the game, he's from here and he's young (40). Climie would have to hire a strong personnel director.

JIM BARKER

Has worked nine seasons in the CFL. Is in his fifth year as director of player personnel with the Stampeders. A former coach of the Argonauts (1999) and Stampeders (2003), Barker is regarded as having a great eye for talent and bringing in top players.

BLUE BOMBERS STATEMENT REGARDING COMMENTS MADE AT FAN FORUM

WINNIPEG, MB – Lyle Bauer, President and CEO of the Winnipeg Football Club, issued the following statement today about comments made during the Fan Forum that took place at the Sun Centre on Tuesday, April 21.

"The Winnipeg Football Club apologizes to the residents of Saskatchewan and Roughrider fans for comments which emanated at the Blue Bomber fan forum. The Winnipeg Football Club holds our partners to the West in a very high regard, as we share similar corporate cultures and values in our respective status as community sponsored teams.

The comments by a fan and our head coach were truly meant in the playful spirit of our great rivalry. We do recognize that some might not have received it in the context in which it was made.

We look forward to our continued relationship, partnership, and rivalry with Saskatchewan, the Labour Day Classic, and subsequent Banjo Bowl.

As someone who was born and raised in Saskatchewan, I share the pride of the residents. However, I know there is no disrespect meant by those who made the comments."

CFL Cautions Players About Facebook

Social networking site, along with Twitter, can possibly reveal too much information
The Toronto Star
Byline: CHRIS ZELKOVICH

When CFL communications head Matt Maychak addressed players on the issue of media sensitivity last year, Facebook was barely mentioned and Twitter never entered the picture.

But when he spoke to a group of Hamilton Tiger-Cats recently, the perils of social networking sites comprised more than one-third of his talk aimed at keeping players from saying and posting things that could get them in trouble.

The reason is that with the growing popularity of such Internet sites, young athletes are presented with even more opportunities to put their virtual feet into their virtual mouths.

While most know enough to avoid controversial statements when talking to the traditional media, they're not always so savvy when it comes to the Internet.

"These guys live online," Maychak said. "We were basically telling them to think and pause before they press the send button.

"Treat it as if you were in front of a microphone or television camera. Don't assume that what you write is just going to 20 buddies."

Maychak has offered his services to all eight CFL teams, but some already have their own programs in place. The Toronto Argonauts, for example, provide similar public relations training for players, coaches and cheerleaders.

"Most of our guys know what they should and shouldn't say online," Argos communications director Beth Waldman said.

That's not necessarily the case with cheerleaders.

"These are girls who've never been the public face of anything and all of a sudden they are on our team and they become public," she said. "It's a safety concern. If you organize a night out on your page, you don't know who's going to show up.

"We tell them, 'If somebody's not your friend, you don't need to accept them as a friend.'"

So far, indiscretions and problems have been rare in the CFL. Some free agents posted information about which team they were signing with before it became official. Former Argo Riall Johnson posted thoughts on retiring after being traded to Winnipeg, but later retracted them.

But the danger for worse is there, which is why many have chosen to make their Facebook pages open by invitation only.

Quarterback Kerry Joseph and receiver Arland Bruce III have public pages, but running back Bryan Crawford says he ensures that every one of the 500-plus people who have access to his page is either a friend or an acquaintance.

"I use it to keep in touch with people I don't see that often, so there's not much there that could get me in trouble," he said. "But I still don't want to get into an awkward situation with somebody I don't know regardless of intent."

Argos defensive end Jonathan Brown's Facebook page is also private.

"You have to watch your words because you don't know if the person you're talking to isn't going to pass that on to somebody you don't know," he said.

That's the real danger, said Maychak, whether it's social networking or texting.

"Say a player meets a woman in a bar," he said. "The next day, he texts her on what happened in practice. She sends it somebody to impress them that she knows an Argo.

"That person sends it to somebody else and who knows where it ends up?"

Social networking sites are perilous places, especially for celebrities and athletes. In addition to embarrassing themselves with imprudent comments, they are subject to pranksters.

Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke and Argonauts running back Jamal Robertson have both been victimized by impersonators.

One unidentified Argo player shut down his Facebook page after he opened it to fans and started receiving disturbing postings along with invitations from women he'd never met.

But the CFL and its teams certainly have nothing against the sites. Almost all are on Twitter. Even commissioner Mark Cohon has his own Twitter account.

A profound thank you to the staff at the Press Box Sports Bar for their hospitality last night! :)

And they're right, I should've pointed out last week's nacho re-heating story did in fact take place at the PBSB. While the story grossed out my family, it scored major points with the boys.

Don't forget today's PBSB weekly Friday lunch buffet ... $10.99.

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have released non-import defensive back J.R. LaRose and import defensive back Wale Dada, the club announced today.

LaRose played eight games in the 2008 season, posting two special teams tackles and a knockdown. He broke his leg on October 4 vs. Winnipeg and spent the remainder of the season on the nine-game injured list. J.R. was invited to the 2005 training camp as an area-projected junior and appeared in one game in August of that year. Signing as a free agent in May 2006, LaRose played in 36 games over the next two seasons (’06-’07). He has accumulated a career total of 59 defensive tackles, 24 special teams tackles, nine pass knock downs and four fumble returns over four seasons.

“We would like to thank J.R. for all his contributions over the past four years,” says Eskimo Head Coach Richie Hall. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Dada joined the Eskimos on September 9th, 2008 and played in two games recording four defensive tackles and one special teams tackle.

The Eskimos also announced the signing of import defensive backs Darnell Terrell and Emanuel White.

Terrell played in 38 games (26 starts) in three years at Missouri recording a total of 112 defensive tackles (75 solo, 37 assisted), 21 pass knock downs, 3.5 tackles for a loss, three interceptions for 25 yards, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

White played 31 games in three years at University of Arkansas at Monticello. He had his best season in 2008 where he started in all 11 games racking up 79 tackles (50 solo, 29 assisted), eight pass knock downs, two interceptions and 1.5 tackles for a loss. He also returned three kick-offs for 34 yards. White attended Bethane-Cookman College and Southwest Mississippi Community College prior to coming to Arkansas.

Host Rod Black is joined in studio by CFL analysts Chris Schultz, Matt Dunigan and Glen Suitor, as they analyze the eight teams' needs and provide opinions on each pick.  CFL ON TSN game analyst Duane Forde, who has covered the DRAFT on four previous occasions, is part of an additional panel of experts including Saint Mary's Huskies head coach Steve Sumarah and McMaster Marauders head coach Stefan Ptaszek, and TSN's Farhan Lalji, who in more than 20 years of coaching football at various youth levels has seen more than 40 of his players go on to play at the collegiate level.  The panel will assess each draft pick's strengths and weaknesses and analyze how they fit in with their new team.  TSN's coverage of the 2009 CFL CANADIAN DRAFT also includes reaction from CFL general managers and interviews with newly-drafted players.

In addition to offering fans coverage of the 2009 CFL CANADIAN DRAFT on demand, TSN.ca features results from this year's CFL evaluation camp and player analysis from Duane Forde.  Fans can also keep track of the teams' picks from all six rounds of the DRAFT on TSN.ca.

Due to various trades, the Montreal Alouettes and Calgary Stampeders currently have eight picks each in this year's DRAFT.  Hamilton, Toronto and B.C. each have seven picks, while Edmonton has five selections, Winnipeg has four and Saskatchewan has two.  In the first round, the Lions have three consecutive picks (4th, 5th and 6th overall) and the Tiger-Cats have two (1st and 3rd overall), while the Roughriders and Eskimos are shut out until the second round, where they pick 9th and 11th overall, respectively.  The Eskimos also have the 12th pick overall in the second round.  Having traded their first and second round picks, the Blue Bombers first pick in the 2009 CFL CANADIAN DRAFT occurs in the third round (19th pick overall).

Once again, TSN is the ultimate destination for all things Canadian football, as the network will televise every single CFL game – including the playoffs and the Grey Cup – in High Definition.  New to the CFL ON TSN broadcast team this year is former Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver Milt Stegall, who joins the crew in studio as a guest analyst.  Back for another season is the award-winning team of play-by-play announcer Chris Cuthbert and game analyst Glen Suitor, along with play-by-play announcer Rod Black and game analyst Duane Forde.  Reporter Sara Orlesky works the sidelines during Wendy's FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL.  Brian Williams returns as on-site host, while Dave Randorf hosts the TSN Studio show alongside analysts Chris Schultz, Hall-of-Famer Matt Dunigan and Jock Climie.  The CFL ON TSN season kicks off on Canada Day (July 1) with an opening night doubleheader featuring Toronto @ Hamilton at 7 p.m. ET, immediately followed by Montreal @ Calgary at 10 p.m. ET in a rematch of last year's Grey Cup final.

Blue Bomber Signings

WINNIPEG, MB – The Blue Bombers added two players to their roster today, signing import quarterback James Kilian and import defensive lineman Montez Murphy to contracts.

Kilian (6-4, 215, Tulsa '05, DOB: October 24, 1980 in Caldwell, KS) was a seventh round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Kilian also spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts after being drafted by the Chiefs.

Murphy (6-6, 260, Baylor '06, DOB: January 6, 1982 in East St. Louis, IL) spent the 2008 CFL season with the Edmonton Eskimos.

In 12 games in Edmonton last season, Murphy registered 24 defensive tackles, three quarterback sacks, and four pass knockdowns.

"Montez is someone I am very familiar with. He had some outstanding games last season with Edmonton, and we believe, with continued grooming, he can be an asset off the edge as a pass rusher and provide us with very good depth," said head coach Mike Kelly.

TORONTO - The Globe and Mail says a senior National Hockey League official met with a group of business people who want to bring a second NHL team to the Toronto area.

The Globe quotes sources as saying the unidentified group met for 2 1/2 hours with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly in downtown Toronto last week. They also met with Paul Kelly, the executive director of the NHL Players' Association. Both declined to comment.

The paper says the group proposes to build an arena in Vaughan, on land north of Pearson International Airport that's owned by businessman Victor De Zen.

One source said the group's market research showed a second team would not significantly impact the revenues of either the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Buffalo Sabres, provided that it is located in the northern part of the Metro Toronto area.

The owner of the Maple Leafs, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, has said it would not consider allowing another team into its territory without concrete data to demonstrate the Leafs position in the marketplace would not be compromised.

There has been much speculation that the Phoenix Coyotes are ripe for a move. The franchise is tied to an arena lease in Glendale, Ariz., until 2033, but the team lost an estimated US $35-million this year.

TSN's Rod Smith pointed out on the early Sportscentre yesterday that Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Nyjer Morgan spent time with the Regina Pats.

It's got quite a few people talking. I know we've discussed this before -- about a year ago -- but does anybody recall Nyjer's time with the Queen City Kids?

I do. He was quite a robust personality. It's going back quite a ways but the Californian came in for a home-and-home series with the Warriors. I can't remember whether he scored or not, but he looked like a freight train on skates, bowling over Warriors left and right. When he smiled, all you could see was teeth under his helmet.

But he didn't last long here. Obviously, he made the right career choice..

----

One brief football note:

The Leader Post's Ian Hamilton did a story with out-of-work football exec Brendan Taman in today's edition. Brendan said since he hasn't heard from the Riders, he plans to look for work elsewhere.

Perhaps Taman should make the first move?? I did hear from "The Beav" via email last night, but not about this situation.

There seems to be so much more here than meets the eye. Regardless, I thought Brendan was glaringly left out when the Blue Bombers were patting themselves on the back for the financial turnaround of the franchise this week.

Just my $0.02.
